- Welcome to our latest update on Lake Oroville, California's second-largest reservoir, where the situation is becoming increasingly tense. As of April 2024, the water level has reached a startling 890 feet 7 inches, dangerously close to full pool. With a long series of storms and an above-average snowpack now melting rapidly, we’re witnessing water levels rise faster than expected. Could this rapid increase pose a risk to the dam’s stability and safety?
In this episode of Time Bomb, we dive deep into the current conditions at Lake Oroville. We’ll explore:
- Current Water Statistics: How the levels have surged past the seasonal average, with historical comparisons.
- Balancing Act: How the California Department of Water Resources is managing the inflow and outflow amid these challenging conditions.
- Water Allocations: Recent changes in water delivery and what they mean for California.
This video also features charts of Lake Oroville’s water levels, inflows, outflows, and snowpack data to illustrate the critical situation we face. With water levels increasing nearly a foot per day, what will happen as we approach full pool?

When Shasta, Oroville and Folsom all have to start dumping water at the same time the Sacramento River levees are going to be put to the test.
It shouldn't be 'dumped', but rather piped SOUTH to agricultural areas and they can grow rice and irrigate nut orchards throughout the entire valley. Make no mistake, obtuse Libby-LEFT California couldn't manage a bowl of oatmeal at the breakfast table, much less precious water...
We haven't needed any irrigation water in SoCal for four months. The weekly rainstorms have taken care of that. And our rates are going up because our water districts are losing revenue due to lack of demand. It's a vicious circle.
Just wait, they will use the rainfall numbers and charge a rate for those too.
I only worry if Blancolirio says to. Nuff said
Hopium.
You should mention the repairs being conducted at oroville tunnels and possible impact on discharges.

3 feet to FULL POOL.
More rain and snow this week.
Then warm May weather heats up.
The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) last week released its next five-year plan for the State Water Project-Update 2023. After years of meetings, California’s premier water agency has decided to focus on “three intersecting themes: addressing climate urgency, strengthening watershed resilience, and achieving equity in water management.” Water supplies for California’s 40 million people and the planet’s most productive agriculture have third- to fifth-level priority.
❤ keep our water
I always appreciate when people dare to have an opinion. As you say "In my opinion" it's clear to everyone that this is YOUR personal judgement. And by delivering all the stats you allow everyone to draw their own conclusions. I know nothing about this topic, I am just an interested viewer from far away (Switzerland and the center of Europe). But 30 years ago I spent a High School year in Monterey CA and I still feel kind of connected.
I would recommend, that you check out the RUclips channel Blancolirio, he covers aviation and also California water issues. He will go up in his airplane and fly around to the different lakes and Reservoirs and he also participates in the meetings of the different water districts and gives some easy to understand information on all of this. He is also a commercial Airline pilot flying Boeing 777 aircraft. I find him much more knowledgeable in all of these subjects versus some AI Voice like we get here at Time bomb. Go back and watch his previous videos going all the way back to when the damn Dam was overflowing the Emergency spillway at Lake Oroville and extensive coverage of the damage to and the rebuilding of the new spillways. He may not come out on a regular basis, but he makes up for it with his in depth coverage. Switzerland is a Country that I would love to visit sometime.
reservoirs are full, time to worry about earthquakes
Very good point!
Does anyone know what exactly they did on the hillside?
Ya'll never hapoy..too much water...not enough water..
It's called seasons.
No, I don't think the dam managers are filling it too fast but I'm worried about Lake Mead and Lake Powell's low levels and possible damage to Glen Canyon dam.
If they can't provide 100% while spilling, have to think the allocations are much too high. As far as dam levels, I grew up near a reservoir which could go from empty to overtopping in 48 hours, 1ft per day doesn't seem fast to me.
It seems to me that keeping the reservoirs topped off as early as possible and keeping them that way will help California through the Summer months when drawdowns are going to be significant. If you want everyone to get 100% allocation of requested water, put another 50' of hard pack snow in the mountains so that they remain white into July. THEN you'll have enough water inflows through August & September to keep everything maxed out and all water customers happy. California is a very long way from that scenario happening.
The primary purpose of dams are flood control/prevention to protect and preserves lives and property. Irrigation must be secondary. Unfortunately water is money out West and the public is selfish - willing to turn a blind eye and expose others to danger.
Magically add 50 ft of snow?
Tell their people to begin watering their lawns at the same time for a long time
CA water management has always been terrible at determining how much water to release. With all the technology they still get it wrong yar after year.
😮
Nothing urgent about it, lake Mead will gladly take that extra water!
"Winter season for the northern Sierra is over"? That didn't age well.
The question is: what will happen to consumption when they fully cover the requests. There had been two strong water years but the predictions due to climate change aren’t good. These amounts of water should be used to refill groundwater while still reducing consumption to be prepared for coming droughts.
If you got a huge bonus at work would you spend it all in one fell swoop? They need to think about beyond this year with water, there is no guarantee that they'll have this much water next year
Definition of Alarmist. Chill. They got this
It's all in the name: TimeBomb. There's nothing chill in His metric !:-)
@@barrydysert2974He alerts the public when things are getting dicey. California DWR is attempting to make people believe they are in control. I don't think California DWR should let this reservoir get this high so early in the year with the almost certain chance of more big rainy weather events before June and maybe July.
Not informative at all to compare or criticize planned deliveries as a percentage of Requests. If they were requesting The Moon and we delivered 0%, is that bad? Or just smart? Is the request reasonable and anticipated, or unprecedented and/or wasteful and/or impossible to sustain? It seems to me that what matters when judging system performance is how the deliveries have changed over time compared to overall supply, and how best to influence responsible growth in demand.
If I understand you right, Oroville could supply ‘the delta’ with much needed water thus reducing the need to ‘waste’ water via the spillways. Surely it’s better to share the resource out now, during surplace?
IT'S NOT WHAT YOU MAKE, IT'S WHAT YOU CAN SAVE!!!!
I was watching the water levels and discharge too and searched for and found this channel. I looked at the DATA the same way and drew my own conclusions. The Oroville Dam will overtop next week given present trend and DWR decisions. Will it? Yes if DWR doesn't increase outflow. Current decisions seem reckless. Do the math. Thanks TB!
Regarding several of the questions asked.
1. The current 2 years of surplus follow several years of drought which saw historic lows. It is wise for managers to hold back deliveries in the short run because we don't know what future years will hold.
2. Without more information about the requested deliveries and the explanation for lower than requested deliveries, it's difficult to know what is going on. It could be the requests were inflated in anticipation of lower deliveries. It could be deliveries are being fulfilled by other downstream sources. Also, we don't even know if the reduced deliveries are below the actual need.
The tone of this video is intended to create controversy without providing enough information to fully understand the situation.
i think you are spot on. Leave it to the CA gubmint to screw things up.
Yep, they want to have complete and total control of everything and everyone.
Maybe they should start building pipelines from these High bodies of water and pump it to Arizona, California or some other water poor State?
Ummmm...Lake Orville IS in California.
SUPRISE!!!!
Cubic square feet?
Sorta like . . .Joe Biden President?
Do you think this would be a stress on the dam and infrastructure of the waterway? The constant pressure? Stuffing and unstuffing? It could get weird overtime. Praying for all up in Northern California. That area sure has had a lot of catastrophes lately.
It’s designed to do this.
Gotta fill em up so you'll have enough water for the fires.
Excessive releases can cause urban flooding.
You aretalking about one reservoir ,why aren’t you talking about 17 reservoirs that there distructingwhy arent you talking about building more reservoirs and more water infrastructure?
We had another good rain and snow season. As a result, Oroville and Shasta are full. We don't need this alarmist crap.
You know it's only going to get worse as we get warmer and becoming more comfortable and not freezing to death.
Just wait until the Greeeeen Spot awakens!
Oroville and Wilbur were right about you.
Yep now they will raise the price because ppl don’t need to buy it because of rains they want there money
The live CAM's have not been available for the past 3 or 4 days.
The reservoir elevation is way to high. Warmer weather could hit the Sierras. Typhoon could hit or come close to Northern California. Pineapple Express from Hawaii could hit Northern California. Atmospheric River from the Pacific Ocean could hit Northern California. They need more extra space to handle a substantial inflow increase should the weather affect rainfall. Millions of humans and animals live below this dam. What about the Sacramento Valley? Don't take a chance.😬
628’ was not for this time of year. Get your stats together and stop the misleading.
Tempest in a teapot.
This is kinda just a little tiny bit of total and absolute BS!
Care to explain why?
Sure are a lot of only fan spam accounts commenting. Lets not let YT turn into Twitter, report the spam everyone.
Lake Oroville is overflowing while Lake Mead, Lake Powell are experiencing loss of water. IMO, the water utility is draining the water to create a water shortage. These people are evil.
Oh come on. The issue is complicated. A failure to even attempt to understand it is the only evil. Double down on ignorance just to assume the worst and hate "them"? lol ridiculous
Opinion, lol
You have no clue what’s going on
@@ShowercurtainU And you do. We have experienced record rains for a couple of years now and the water authority continues to release water. In San Diego county, the water authority there neglected to fix a dam that they were supposed to 10 years ago. A result was they released 11 billion gallons of water into the ocean. The water authority in control of the Colorado river can't explain to the public why they are predicting continual water loss into this year even though the snow pack hasn't even started melting yet.
Ya... I don't know what's going on but you do.
@@wesleyhudson2028 LOL. Allowing precious drinking water to create an artificial drought. So funny... Hey everybody! We have a deep thinker here! {points at Wesley}

Does CA water managers have any clue what their doing? Keep voting liberal folks that seems to be working...
I don't care.
