Could you do a ballad or something a little more chill? I remember watching one of the originals in this series, Autumn Leaves, and even that was a very energetic rendition. I'm currently taking your advice and doing a standard a week; currently working on Cry Me a River. However, I'm finding it difficult to Ad Lib too much. There's this precarious balance between inserting energy via ad libbing and being faithful to the sentiment of the melody that (quite frankly) I'm simply not good enough to produce. // If you could do that, it would be aces, but whatever you choose will be golden regardless. However, I used to be with a woman who played classic piano and when we were playing Tenderly, she was telling me that I did not hel the notes like they were indicated... in fact I was always on the first beat of the measure but was holding some note and shortening other ones as I felt them. So maybe what you are teaching is when you play alone in front of your friends? Am I right?
No, you can do this when you are playing with anyone, but you have to keep time, even though you are playing a bit more freely, the melody has to be in there and fit correctly.

Hi Scott, thanks for all your great and detailed explanations. Since you asked for it, I have two songs I would be interested how you'd approach it. First is "As time goes by" from Casablanca. When looked at just two bars I could add some embellishments like neighbor notes and turns. However, when I played the entire melody it felt over the top. It seems to me that it's most important to get the swing out and emphasize it with the articulation and the longer notes at the end of a phrase are there to give it a rest without the need of too much put into it. Another song that I find even more difficult is "Tears in heaven", probably the saddest song written in the last decades. There are many longer notes that allow for embellishments but my impression is that I lose the sad character of the song by adding too much decoration; so I did it very sparingly and only on very long notes. This was also the impression I got from the covers on youtube: those were great versions but not as sad as Eric Clapton's original. I would be curious about your ideas to add lib while preserving or even emphasizing the sadness of the song. Challenge accepted? Cheers and thanks, Peter

I think your performance and your capacity to learn is incredible. I have had difficulty when a song has repeated notes in the same sentence. Many songs like "Easy" by Lionel Richie or "For Whom the Bells Tools" by Bee Gees. Could you emphasize how Would I ad Lib in songs like those? Thank you!
On Easy, I'd switch the rhythm up a bit and ad a neighbor tone or two. Those repeated notes make sense when you are using lyrics with them, but when play an instrument you have to work to make them sound interesting. Articulations, dynamics, and changing a few rhythms can go a long way
These are very helpful tutorials, Scott. They bridge the gap between staying faithful to the original melody and improvising purely from the chords without regard for the original melody. What I like about Coltrane's version of "My Favorite Things" is that even the tenth time through one can still hear the melody. Of course, my ear is so bad that there's a good chance everyone else can still hear the head in modern jazz but I certainly can't ;)
I agree Andy, it use be that everyone just put their own flavor on the melody... now a days they almost get rid of it. And with solos they play so far out and do so many substitutions that you can't hear it in the solo. I'm old school when it comes to that.

Lately, I’ve been ignoring lead sheets and going straight to recordings to get the song in my ear. For “Moon”, some of my favorites are the Sinatra versions. His phrasing and rhythmic timing provide great sources of inspiration for me to work from. Thanks again.

Watermelon Man is all about the dynamics on those long notes. Hit them hard, get really soft and bring it back up.

I play that songs allllllll of the time, but it is in C#, which is not a very friendly key. Maybe I'll teach it by taking it down a half step.

It's most likely the way you are putting the air in the sax. Really concentrate on your breath support and air stream
