Acctually welding the "stock" lockerdiff on 940s is quite simple, since there is a little weight on the inside that releases once you go at an certain speed so either cutting the weight will make sure it locks the diff up to like 80kmh or you just weld it in place. then it will lock the diff all the time but unlike a welded diff it wont make that skipping noise when turning :)
I have not personally done it but, basically you weld the weight in the diff in place so both the wheels lock. You can Google some pictures to get a better idea of what I mean 🙂
Good job! Over here we just fill the entire spider-carrier to be sure :) Everyone ought to know that limited slip diffs are better than welded, problem is these diffs are 30 years old so the clutches will be worn out (no maintenance) by the time a Limited Slip wanting sob gets the car. So from there it`s pretty simple for most people, they wanna start putting in boost shit and dont care about diff so most people elect to get an open diff carrier and weld it.
I have a factory installed g80 in my 93 240+T. It is far from ideal, but much better than an open diff. It always spins 2 tires in a burnout, and drifts okay.
You can modify the g80 locker to suit better performance driving and drifting etc. Locker is centrifugal force activated and you can weld the "lip" what activates the lock, so it will keep it locked all the time :)
Can you daily a car with a welded diff? Asking because I'm going to buy a car soon so I can go to and from school and I don't really want to own two cars
Ive dailied cars with welded diffs almost exclusively for the last 6 years . Just gotta be carefull as the rear likes to kick out if youre going to fast around a corner
@@driftsnlifts Thank you for the speedy reply. I've heard that a car with a welded diff can get bouncy in corners on dry tarmac. Is that true? And I will most likely get a Volvo 740 or 940
nah not really. I daily a 740 with a welded diff, you don't know it's there on dry pavement, it only skips a bit on wet. Parking is harsh in reverse, it pulls really straight on highways. EZPZ to make it slide, only downside is that you eat through rear tyres very fast even if you don't slide it. If you know someone in the tire business it's not really a downside, I put a 'fresh' set of used tires every once in a while.
I got a tip for you. If you weld your diff with driveshafts inside the diff you are gonna weaken the hardening in them, the tip is to slide them out a little bit when you weld :) If you're unlucky you will break a driveshaft some time soon :/
Instead of welding my diff, i installed a "spartan locker" which is what is used in jeeps for rock crawling and off roading. It works on the same principle as a clutch type lsd but instead of clutch packs there are teeth, so lockup is always 100%. It clicks around corners and makes some pretty gnarly sounds but it slides great.
Spartan locker, aussie locker, lunchbox locker, what ever u wanna call it, makes the loudest tikking noises ever. Sounds like you drivetrain is about to fail. Great on race cars, crap on dd's
I'm very curious about the lunchbox locker for drifting, I was under the impression that it is very jerky on-off when mid corner off throttle as they are designed to act like open diff when cornering without gas. But hey if you can drift it predictably I might try one once my welded diff or axle breaks.
G80's are easier to weld than an open diff, you just simply weld the weight so that it won't pop out = locks the wheels in any speed. You can also cut the weight in half so that it will pop out much later, usually around rev limiter in 3rd/4th gear depending on your gear ratios.
I have a 740 and was actually looking at getting a 240 but after driving the 240 I realized the 740 was so much bigger and was built a lot better. Plus they can be had for cheaper
Its a bit bigger yeah, but a 240 is built like a brick shit-house and that was why it outlived its successor (the 740) but the 740 is still a truly great volvo
MikoMuru with a welded differential like this , both of the rear tires are spinning at an identical speed basically like a go cart axel , with a limited slip there will be some difference in the wheel speed side to side. The welded diff is great for drifting because it's very predictable and always the same feel , a worn out lsd will be less predictable because the rear wheels will be spinning at different rates of speed
you might slide a corner out at the lights if your not thinking about it when your new to it, you'll have to accelerate less in rainy weather to not loose traction( if thats what your trying to achieve ;)
how often do you change your drive shafts? Ive heard alot of people saying you will break them easier if you dont take out the diff or drive shafts before welding :)
G80 locker is the same POS gm put in my truck. i average 1 every 2 years . they are called grenade 80s from what ive learned. i have a video of my blowing mine up doing a burnout.

Word dude, i can get you a pic if you want. Or search for "svetsa slungdiff" that's Swedish for welding such a diff. :)

The G80/1041 diff, u just weld the sling weight to the housing and it will work like a normal lsd. And a quite good one if it isnt too much worn
Good job!

Can you show us how to make modified steering nuckles?
just so you know i wont be doing this to the 91 wagon i just got, but love your laid back enthusiasm

JB Weld held like a charm!

im glad i bought one the other week, good timing :P
whats up man thank you for the amazing videos you have inspired me to get a volvo wagon for my next car haha
Dude i love the wheels, what are they called?

isnt it MK18 variants?
sebastianblevdet No idea :/
Jesper they're old school boyd wheels 5 stars from 1991
You can mod pretty well G80 locker to be "welded-diff" ewen its totally Open otherway
You can accually weld the diffs on 940 aswell, a few Friends did it on theirs
/Swedish dude
You can brick a locket diff so that it locks the diff up to like 60-100kmh.
Can a 960 diff work in a 740
Show us how Eaton TrueTrac 912A588 works on install and use plz
great content! thanks!
you can weld an locker diff (1041)

Tri It jerks the car around if youre going under 10 mph, but above that its not really a problem
Welded diff is even worse for a daily driver...

does not pulling the diff out work for a 240 sedan as well
or just the 740?
Zackary Ray Yep should work for the 240 aswell
What made you buy a 740 over a 240? Or do you simply prefer the 740?
I have a 740 and was actually looking at getting a 240 but after driving the 240 I realized the 740 was so much bigger and was built a lot better. Plus they can be had for cheaper
Mark Krukowski a 740 is bigger than a 240?? Thought it was the other way around. 740's must be faster too
+Bowa Journey yes I own a 740 wagon and have driven a few 240s. 740 is much bigger

+Josh Briggs kinda up for debate really 740 is just as good if not better
So what is the difference between this and a limited slip differential? I am confused with the terminology and reason for doing this.

OOH.. hey.. can i put the swqaybar from a sedan on my wagon or no?
yes
is there any dangers with welding a diff?
you might slide a corner out at the lights if your not thinking about it when your new to it, you'll have to accelerate less in rainy weather to not loose traction( if thats what your trying to achieve ;)
*Non-Chlorinated brake cleaner or your welding could make poisonous phosgene gas.
Don't most people weld a little plate in too?
Is that a 1030 or 1031 Axle?
pretty much the same axle.. same principle :)
one has a bigger crownwheel than the other
sebastianblevdet yeah but it doesn´t matter when welding the diff ;)
how often do you change your drive shafts? Ive heard alot of people saying you will break them easier if you dont take out the diff or drive shafts before welding :)
you'll only break them easier if your running wide, race/sticky tyres as each wheel will be fighting the other at the centre of the diff
If your gonna use brake kleen use dechlorinated unless you want to be toking strait Phosgene gas.

Yes they wear out pretty fast. They need an overhaul like every 100k miles. But so does kaaz diffs aswell so I dont recon they're not so bad
Anyone Who knows what wheels are on the 740 in the thumbnail?
Your friend should film while a seven year old welds it
If I wanted a drift volvo what ones could I get
740s and 940s are the best. I love my 740 wagon and it drifts awesome
brad johnson you can get a 240 to
brad johnson get a 91+ 940 turbo they have stronger motors
Tri the most powerful 940 is the turbo ++ but It's rare as fuck
+priltzy 90+ not 91+. All 90+ and some 89s had the 13mm rods. Any will hold boost just fine.
just get a new wastegate and go like 1 bar and the car will slide dry
