It has it’s roots in 19th century tradition of national romanticism,going to people - time when also Latvian national awareness was created as nation of peasants, still continues today. So this speaks to people, these are well known archetypes, but it’s a romantic image and should be treated as such. We should not judge real live by comparing it to this.

And it always symbolises good things like life or time or strength. Nazis used it because they saw it as a symbol of power and strength but they used it for evil instead of good which has forever left terrible associations whenever people see it. And it's sad. In latvian culture it's always been a very important symbol and the fact that it was wrongly used isn't gonna change our culture and history. so we don't shy away from it, we keep celebrating the true meaning of it and it's place in our culture
