Flip opens up his new store in Hollywood. At the grand opening lots of celebrities including the Marx Brothers show up. After Flip mixed a guest some drink, things start to get out of control.
I died when I saw the Marx brothers, all I could think of was duck soup for the rest of the episode. :,D
Never Mind in fact I'll name the celebrities for you
0:33 Laurel and Hardy
0:48 Jimmy Durante and Eddie Cantor (separate acts)
0:54 Rasputin (Joke, he was dead by 1916)
1:00 The Marx Brothers
1:13 Mae West
2:22 Joe E. Brown
2:47 John Barrymore (Drew Barrymore's Grandfather), (Star of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde)
You've officially blown my simple mind! Hahahahahaha! :)
What did I just watch!!!?
This should be renamed 'Celebrities Walking Funny'.
I really like the Keaton caricature. It is interesting seeing him pared together with Durante. This came out when they were doing movies together. But those movies weren't really good. Both are good actors on their own, and don't need a partner.
I REALLY love the music in this.
Good movie. Is like the Silly Simphonies
Ub Iwerks and his characters were becoming a serious competition to Disney, so he hired Iwerks who later was the first person to animate Mickey Mouse.
That dude ordering the chocolate soda is a HOT!
Oh, and that's Lionel Barrymore as Rasputin (a then-current movie). And the Jekyll/Hyde was probably inspired by the remake with Fredric March.
Ahaha Harpo going after Mae, I expected that:D
Hi! Can someone tell me what the Marxs brothers say when they order, please?? I can't quite catch what they're saying :(
Any help will be appreciate it! Cheers!!
Joe E Brown looks like a Dr.Seuss character
This is so funny! I love cartoons from that time. Do you mind if I use this in one of my Marx Brothers films?
BTW March actually played John Barrymore in a really fun film called Royal Family of Broadway
Several caricatures of movie stars appear. The parade of celebrities who emerge from their limousines are (in order of appearance) Oliver Hardy, Stan Laurel, Jimmy Durante, Buster Keaton, Lionel Barrymore (as Rasputin), Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, Harpo Marx, Zeppo Marx and Mae West. In the drug store, Joe E. Brown is the big-mouthed man who wants cake. Later, an effeminate man drinks a concoction that turns him into Mr. Hyde as played by Fredric March in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
That was one of the weirdest old cartoons I have ever seen!
wow that guy ruins Flip's investment and Flip lets him walk away
October 12, 1933 to be exact !
I feel like a bit of an idiot for thinking it was John Barrymore. I think the fact that his brother, Lionel was depicted as Rasputin here along with the fact John played Jekyll and Hyde in 1920 influenced my reply. Also, the reason I referred to him as "the gay guy" was in response to the poster I was replying to using the same description. Your knowledge of classic Hollywood film impresses me. In revision, I'd like to suggest that it may have been Frederich March who played J & H in 1931.
@altobiotero I think your talking about , zeppo marx, chico marx, harpo marx and groucho marx? the marx brothers
Actually that's Buster Keaton with Durante. They were kind of a team at MGM at the time, much to Keaton's horror.
Much of the animation of the effeminate guy (whichever celebrity he's supposed to be) was done by Irv Spence who would be a main animator on Tom and Jerry.
Ha the Marx Brothers are awesome.
It's an interesting idea. Barrymore did play Dr J where he famously turned into a believable Mr H without makeup in 1920, (and did a similar amazing facial muscles only transformation in Francois Villon), but 1) I don't think he was ever thought to be gay, and 2) even though some of the caricatures are not so good, this guy has nothing of the famous defining profile. Although it hardly fits the times and themes, he reminds me of Oscar Wilde, but I don't know of any such portrayal back then.
The gay guy was supposed to be John Barrymore who incidentally was Drew Barrymore's paternal grandfather.
Lionel Berrymoore looks a lot like George Bernard Shaw
When was this made? Year, to be exact.
1933
The LAST FTF cartoon
HAM ON RYE
AAH-CHA-CHAAA
Ok I recognize the Marx Brothers, especially Groucho, and John Barrymore but can anyone tell me who those other guys are?
It's Buster Keaton with Jimmy Durante, not eddie Cantor.
I think this was back when coke actually had cocaine in it.
Walt Disney robbed ol Ub for everything
@altobiotero Ah my comp lags so I think my time was off. sorry I couldn't have been more help lol
I called him the gay guy, which he certainly is. I checked a little and read some forum threads, no one can identify him. The problem is that the J & H thing, in the toon's clear Hollywood caricature context, makes you think it must be someone, but I don't think it is now (although I still think Oscar Wilde is possible). Anyway there is no clear and definitive answer. March wasn't known as gay and certainly not like this portrayal. At this point anything is just a guess.
Beautiful print. Some of those caricatures were really awful (eg Jimmy Durante, Mae West) but it is nice to see them anyway, (I remember all of them first hand) and some are actually pretty good, (eg Joe E Brown). Not sure who the gay guy was supposed to be though, but the whole Jekyll and Hyde thing was great and a very clever idea.
@diddymuck he does look like him
why he is not dead 4:04
@altobiotero Jimmy Durante and Joe E. Brown
@RingoandCarlin try rasputin.
