The song was originally written by the band Sweet.They wrote it after being bombarded by bottles, chairs etc during a gig in 70s in my hometown of Kilmarnock, Ayrshire Scotland.
Same in the north-east of Scotland in the 1970s. The Saturday night village/town hall dance with the bars shut at 10pm and everyone drunk as skunks. The girls danced round their handbags near the front of the stage while the blokes (guys) were at the back trying to avoid bumping into anyone (the signal for a fight), which was impossible. When it did kick off, as you say chairs, bottles and anything else to hand was used. Happy days (!!!???). Still, the music was good 🙂

Find and listen to "Man from Mecca". Musically Chinn and Chapman did Sweet no favours whatsoever.
