You are not going to believe how many days I've been trying to get a design transfered from my computer to the sewing machine. And you just casually mentioned my solution.... you have to be IN EMBROIDERY MODE to see the files!!! I have downloaded several patterns but I couldn't get them on the machine! Thank you so much!!!! I can't believe I spent so much time on this simple solution.
I've had the Brother SE-425 for a few years but have never tackled the embroidery function until recently. Your video has a lot of insightful info on how to easily pull embroidery files from the computer. Awesome!!
Thank you so much!! I have had my new sewing machine 3 months and here I sit for the first time with it next to my computer ready to try my first download. You have probably saved me so much turmoil!! I ready to try now. Thank you, thank you!!!
Thank you for this video. I just got my Brother se425 and thought I had watched enough you tube videos to get started, but, no. I sat here staring at it wondering now what was I suppose to do? With my machine by my side and you on the computer you walked me through the process and I had success. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Congrats on your new machine. I know what you went through. It was a little overwhelming for me too. I don't think I tried the embroidery part of the machine for a couple of weeks. lol
Thank You SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Much !!!!! i was getting very frustrated ! your kind voice really helped me feel calm about it !!! Thank You Thank You !!! Happy Upcoming Holidays !!!
Thank you so much. Easy to learn from you. How do you change colors on your machine? I am having trouble changing out all the bobbin colors, and realigning the pattern to begin again in a new color.
You don't change the bobbin thread only the top color thread. Here's a link to bobbin thread on amazon: www.amazon.com/New-brothread-Prewound-Embroidery-Machines/dp/B077YZQDCF/ref=sr_1_4_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=brothers+60+wt+bobbin+thread&qid=1618609623&sr=8-4-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzQUlMM1NWSk9SRkk2JmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMDYxNjMyMTdFQ1Q0S1c3UE9ONSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNzI3MDA1MlE3S1hXUlZNOTlHMyZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU= Bobbin thread is a very lightweight white thread. You should have received a spool with your sewing machine.
I appreciate all your sc400 videos, Diane. They are so helpful! My question is: I have Windows 7 and would like to purchase some designs online. First I would like to save the designs to my computer, but I have had a difficult time locating a format and file I should save it under. Adobe Photoshop picked it up, but I couldn't open it due to the wrong format. Don't care to use WinZip either. Any ideas? Thank you!
Andrea Larabee Thanks Andrea. You will always get that message if you try to open up a PES file on your computer. A PES file is nothing but computer language that sends instructions to your sewing machine. I created a desktop icon called PES Files. Whenever I download an Embroidery file whether it's free or purchased, I use the "save as" option. I click save as then choose "Desktop, PES Files" then save. It usually comes with it's own file name but you can rename it if you wish. I don't use any special program though there are some you can purchase to use. I save the embroidery picture using the same file name but use the .JPG extension if they don't come together in a folder. That way the PES file and the picture are right next to each other. You can divide the desktop folder into subfolders such as "animals, flowers, cartoons, fonts, holidays, etc." Your downloaded picture automatically saved under Photoshop because that's probably your default location. The "PES" part of the download is still somewhere on your computer. You can find it's location by using your search function. Hope that helps.
Diane great video! I have SewWhat Pro and a Brother SE450. I have watched youtube videos on how to use a repositional hoop and create appliques larger than 4x4. I have used the larger hoop successfully with other items but for some reason cannot get an applique file I purchased to load to my machine. The error message says the file is to large, I have saved these file in the past as SVG files and uploaded just fine. Only difference is I'm trying to use the 5x7 hoop. Can you give any advise?
The SE-400 will only accept designs that are 4 x 4. You can use any size hoop on this machine but you're limited to the 4 x 4 on the transfer. The only way I know how to transfer a bigger design to the machine is to have the software that will allow you to split the project in half and treat it as 2 uploads. The only other thing I can think of is the file is larger that the available memory on your machine.
Hi, thanks for this great video it has been so helpful. Question; once I transfer the file into my machine can I take the cord off the computer? Can I disconnect the computer from the embroidery machine???
Yes you can after the upload. It will stay in the machine without the cord being attached. If you want to save it for use at another time then click on the pocket with the arrow pointing down beside the display. That will save it into the sewing machine. It will stay there until you delete it off of the machine.
They have one but it's separate from the regular manual. I think it should be in the main manual too. Here's a link: support.brother.com/g/b/manuallist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=hf_se400eus&flang=English&type3=266&type2=69
I have a question...whats the difference between the PES and DST files? Does it matter which one we download when it comes to applique designs as long as it meets the size requirements for the machine, 4x4?
+Kimberly's Journey It's just what software was used to create the digitalized pattern. It's a file extension like .pdf, jpg.,.doc, etc. This machine will recognize both types of files.
Wonderful! Thank-you so much, Diane! Your video's have been very helpful. Have you made a tutorial on embroidering an applique design onto a short by adding the different fabrics behind each step?
+Kimberly's Journey No. I haven't done a video on that. I've made a couple of blouses with embroidery on them. One blouse was lined and with the other I used the wash away stabilizer. The tricky part is getting the embroidery design exactly where you want it.
The usb connection on the SE400 is a USB type B connection. I bought a connector on Amazon I can plug a flash drive directly into. I haven't gotten it yet but we will give it a try. It would be nice to just use a flash drive instead of hooking it up to a computer.
+Diane Morello Well I got the connector and tried.... it didn't work. I think the SE400 is looking for a "handshake" from a computer, which a non-powered flash drive isn't going to give it. I have seen people hooking up tablet computers to one. well it was worth a try.
What if I want to save the design to the machine? I don't have a laptop anymore and it's not practical to sit by the computer to sew. I get stuck in a loop - I copy to the removable drive, hit the upload arrow and get to the color breakdown. I'm able to save, but then I can't leave the pattern without deleting - it's like I'm stuck in a loop on that screen.
You have to press the save function. It's the key on the bottom of the first column on the display. It looks like a pocket with an arrow pointing down. You only have 512 KB of memory on the machine and you can only save up to 12 patterns at a time. If you try to save 13 patterns, you'll get an error message telling you to delete a pattern. If you exceed the 512 KB, you won't be able to save any more patterns until you delete some. Most patterns aren't that big so it's easy to save 12 designs at once. The info is on page 150 of your machine manual.
Yes. That's is correct but according to the USB instruction manual, "Tajima (.dst) embroidery data is displayed in the pattern list screen by file name (the actual image cannot be displayed). Only the first eight characters of the file name can be displayed. Since Tajima (.dst) data does not contain specific thread color information, it is displayed with our default thread color sequence. Check the preview and change the thread colors as desired. Hope that helps. You can download all the manuals and upgrades for this machine at solutions.brother.com.
I want to know how I can do the embroidery of larger size with bigger bits. How can I complete the work part? Can you explain this? I also want to do a cover for the eye through this machine fully can it?
I'm sorry but I don't understand your questions. If you want to make bigger designs than you will have to buy a better machine. There are embroidery designs online that can make eye patches in the 4" x 4" frame that will work on this machine.
hi the video was great but now have a question. I copy a picture from a site because it didn't have it when I downloaded the actual site. the picture is in every save place that I could save it in. but when I try to get it to the sewing machine it wouldn't transfer over. so would you say it's a must to download any pictures in order to embroidery?
You don't have to download the picture of the design at all but you do have to download the file with the .PES or .DST ending or extension. I think you might be trying to send the picture to the sewing machine. Let's just say I see a free pattern of a 4x4 owl. I look for the file that says download OWL.PES. You can't open these files and look at them. It's just computer language. That's the file you want. It doesn't have a picture with it. This is the file that the sewing machine can read and understand. If it's compatible with the machine it will upload to the display on the machine.
I wish I would have found your video earlier today.. could nor for the life of me get my file to my PED Basic reader card from the software it was in computer but card was not picking it up. I finally found a USB cord not knowing if it would work and got my file that way. Unfortunately I had more issues after that. My needle just fell out of my machine during my embroidering, don't even know how that even happened. But needless to say monogramming my husbands terry cloth robe without educating myself first along with all the other issues.. it was not my day at all!
I do all what you explain BUT the image does not show so that I can select it. My driver is up to date. What can I do? Could it be that the PES is too large?
Yes. The file is probably 5" x 7" design. That's a pretty common problem. If the machine doesn't recognize the file, it's either too big, the wrong file extension, a corrupt file, or not compatible with this machine. If it's a .DST file, you will only see the name of the file and not the picture. If it's a DST file, go ahead and upload it, then you can use the color check function to see the actual design.
Most designs come with a color chart that matches the embroidery steps in a design with the standard embroidery thread colors. The machine will also tell you what color comes next. You can use the recommended colors or use any colors you want.
If the file is not showing up in the display, it's probably not compatible with the sewing machine. Here's a few reasons why the file may not transfer to the sewing machine. It could because the file isn't a 4"x4" design, it's not a .pes or .dst file, the file is corrupt, or you're not placing the file in the correct drive location, you're not pressing the correct display buttons.
You need to have the software that can convert picture files into embroidery files. It's rather expensive if you only want one design. Check on Etsy and search for a seahorse .dst or .pes file that's a 4" x 4" design. All you have to do is put "seahorse .pes file" in the search bar. There's some very nice ones there for only a few dollars.
Hello there, I have so much troubles trying to download the files on my SE400, I do everything as you said, but nothing seems to work :( I downloaded some that were free so I thought that, that might be the problem, so I bought one, and the problem continuous, so please if you have any advice I would really appreciated it:)
It's kind of hard to diagnose the problem on you tube. When you connect the USB cable from the computer to the sewing machine, does a new drive show up on your computer? In File Explorer, it will show up like this: USB Drive (J:) or some other letter. That is where you place the PES file for upload to the sewing machine. If the drive isn't showing up when you connect, then you probably have a bad cable.
Ok Good. Pick one of your PES files (make sure that it is a 4" x 4" design). Let's pretend it's called duck.pes Send that file to drive (E). So click on duck.pes (now it's highlighted) now right click on the mouse and click on "send to" then choose drive (E). On the sewing machine display, press the USB button with the computer in the background. The file you sent to drive (E) should show as a picture in the display. I see a duck. So I'm going to press on the duck and turn it to a black background. Then I'm going to click on the pocket in the upper right hand corner that has an arrow pointing up. Now I see the pattern with the instructions on what color to thread the machine. OK try that.
If it's still not working; in the Instruction Manual for USB Connections, pages 3 thru 5 give step by step instructions. If that manual didn't come with your machine, you can download it at the Brothers Support webpage. support.brother.com I hope you got it working.
I've never tried it but probably not. The stitches are so dense that it would perforate the vinyl before you could get it out of the hoop. Someone asked the same question on Amazon. You might check there for more answers.
okay one more question you have been great. So as long as I'm just doing the letters on the bonnet I don't need a laptop or computer only if I want to save things?
You can't transfer designs from the sewing machine to a computer for saving. You can save up to 10 designs on the sewing machine. You don't need a computer or laptop to embroider names on bonnets with this machine.
No, I haven't been looking but I read somewhere that Brothers is no longer making them. I still use my cord to transfer files to my embroidery machine.
No. The machine comes with built in designs and some alphabets. I don't think that Brother's make the embroidery cards for this machine any longer. If you want to download additional designs you'll need to use a device that has an "USB" port and can transfer designs to a specific location or drive such as a laptop or desktop computer.
Yes. Use the 4x4 designs. Here's a link to your sewing machine manual. It's safe and directly from the Brother's support manual site. It's in ".pdf" form for reading on the computer. www.brother-usa.com/VirData/Content/en-US/HAD/Consumer/UsersManual/XE3116-201_3_view_091103.pdf
The display will give you a number that matches the next color. You can check the charts in your manual to find out what color is next. Here's link to the embroidery manual that you can download. www.brother-usa.com/-/media/brother/product-catalog-media/documents/2019/04/30/14/11/qsg_se_400_enes_2329.pdf Page 20 and 21 has the embroidery thread numbers with color charts.
If it fits the format. It has to be a .pes or .dst file. It has to be less that 512KB. It has to be smaller than 4" x 4". There's a bunch of websites that will take a picture of your logo and convert it for you. Just do a search of online digitizing companies. The fees vary.
Sorry Bruce. I can't offer any advice on that question. I've never stitched a design on sweater knits. All I know is that you have to use stabilizers on the top and bottom of the knit fabric to get a nice finish. The SE-400 is the only embroidery machine I've used. It's a starter machine for most embroidery fans.
i don't get it why am i still bound to 4"x4" if i had the larger hoop. what type of machine you recommend for t shirts if this can't do a bigger names for t shirts
You'll have to do your own research for the machine that will do bigger embroidery designs and larger fonts on T-shirts. There are many on the market but can be very expensive.
Hmm can i use a flash drive rather than the usb cord? Lol one more Q. Can u use a walking food on this machine? My current machine doesn't take the walking food And thank u
No. There no port for a flash drive. I think the USB cable is called "B cable". It has a square shaped connection point. Yes you can use a walking foot on this machine. Even the generic walking foot has worked for me on this machine.
That's called "Digitizing". It's converts pictures into embroidery files. You have to buy the software or program that can do that. It's very expensive. Brother has one program called PE-Design Plus2 that works with the SE-400.
USB Data Transfer Cable Cord. I found one on Amazon but I don't know if it will work on the SE400. www.amazon.com/PlatinumPower-Transfer-Brother-Embroidery-Machine/dp/B073YJKCH2/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=brother+se400+embroidery+machine+USB+cord&qid=1617283000&sr=8-2
Here's a link to the USB manual to use when you want to transfer files from the computer to the sewing machine. It's safe too. www.brother-usa.com/VirData/Content/en-US/HAD/Consumer/InstructionManual/XE3364-001-1_view_08.03.25.pdf
Sorry Kenneth. I have my machine packed up and ready to move to my new place. I don't know if I'll have enough room to keep recording videos there. Check out embroidery.com. She has a lot of great videos there under community and education.
There's 5 alphabet fonts in large, medium, and small sizes programmed into the machine. It's probably all that you need for bonnets. The ABC's have the upper and lower cases plus the numbers and punctuations.

+Deborah Walters You're very welcome. Happy Holidays to you also.

it's funny cuz I got the same laptop and embroidery lol 😂 thank you for the vid!
Very helpful! Thanks, bunches!!!!
you mentioned another file name DST. so on the brothers which takes a PES file I can also use DST if PES is not available ...correct
Yes. That's is correct but according to the USB instruction manual, "Tajima (.dst) embroidery data is displayed in the pattern list screen by file name (the actual image cannot be displayed). I transfer file to my SE400 but they are not showing on the machine, may you help me? PLEASE REPLY
Does this mean you dont need an embroidery program like Sew what pro on your computer?
Yes. If you have a ".PES or .DST" file that is a 4" x 4" design you can upload it to the sewing machine with the USB cord.
I'll learn this next
I just sent you an email. I would love to see your Mash 4077. My husband loved that show. We still watch reruns when they're on TV.
Can you download any picture and embroidery it?? My sister wants me to make a sea horse..

Yes, it does shows the removable disk(E) and the cable an everything its new
Diane Morello
Thanks, I'll try it tomorrow, I hope it works :) thanks
Could you give me that Facebook site with the free designs again? Wasn't sure of the spelling. Thanks so much
m.embroiderydesigns.com/
Tons of cute free designs. I'm a beginner so I'm trying to get the feel before "investing tons of money".
Can this machine be used to embroider on very thin upholstery vinyl?
I've never tried it but probably not. The stitches are so dense that it would perforate the vinyl before you could get it out of the hoop. Someone asked the same question on Amazon. You might check there for more answers.
Thanks, I'll try this later. :)
okay one more question you have been great.
Hi, have you found a place to get SD card for the se400?
No, I haven't been looking but I read somewhere that Brothers is no longer making them. I still use my cord to transfer files to my embroidery machine.
Darlene Nelson not yet
Hello, do you have to have a laptop to use the embroiderer on the machine ?
No. The machine comes with built in designs and some alphabets. I don't think that Brother's make the embroidery cards for this machine any longer. If you want to download additional designs you'll need to use a device that has an "USB" port and can transfer designs to a specific location or drive such as a laptop or desktop computer.
What’s the name of this machine
So my HE-240 the design it take 4x4 too I just asking
Yes. Use the 4x4 designs. Here's a link to your sewing machine manual. It's safe and directly from the Brother's support manual site. It's in ".pdf" form for reading on the computer. www.brother-usa.com/VirData/Content/en-US/HAD/Consumer/UsersManual/XE3116-201_3_view_091103.pdf
How you can know which color is next
The display will give you a number that matches the next color. You can check the charts in your manual to find out what color is next. Here's link to the embroidery manual that you can download. www.brother-usa.com/-/media/brother/product-catalog-media/documents/2019/04/30/14/11/qsg_se_400_enes_2329.pdf Page 20 and 21 has the embroidery thread numbers with color charts.
thank you so much!
Can you download your own logo and have it embroidery by the machine??
If it fits the format. It has to be a .pes or .dst file. It has to be less that 512KB. It has to be smaller than 4" x 4". There's a bunch of websites that will take a picture of your logo and convert it for you. Just do a search of online digitizing companies. The fees vary.

What embroidery machine do you recommend I use for sweaters and that can take my local??
Sorry Bruce. I can't offer any advice on that question. I've never stitched a design on sweater knits. All I know is that you have to use stabilizers on the top and bottom of the knit fabric to get a nice finish. The SE-400 is the only embroidery machine I've used. It's a starter machine for most embroidery fans.
Diane Morello thank you so much
does it have a bigger hoop ?
REPLY
You can purchase the bigger hoop for this machine on Amazon but you still can only embroidery 4" x 4" designs.
i don't get it why am i still bound to 4"x4" if i had the larger hoop.
what type of machine you recommend for t shirts if this can't do a bigger names for t shirts
You'll have to do your own research for the machine that will do bigger embroidery designs and larger fonts on T-shirts. There are many on the market but can be very expensive.
thanks!
Hmm can i use a flash drive rather than the usb cord?
Lol one more Q. Can u use a walking food on this machine? My current machine doesn't take the walking food
And thank u
No. There no port for a flash drive. I think the USB cable is called "B cable". It has a square shaped connection point. Yes you can use a walking foot on this machine. Even the generic walking foot has worked for me on this machine.
what do you have ult2002d someone gave me one and I need some more designs
Sorry Juanita. I don't know anything about that machine or what type of designs it can use.
can i change the file jpeg to pes and if so how can i do that. thank you for the great video
That's called "Digitizing". It's converts pictures into embroidery files. You have to buy the software or program that can do that. It's very expensive. Brother has one program called PE-Design Plus2 that works with the SE-400.
OK thank you
Hi would you like to share some free patterns with me ? Thanks
Can you use and pictures you make?
To do that you have to get the software that can convert pictures to .pes files like PE Design.
thank you!
Whats the name of the cord
USB Data Transfer Cable Cord. I found one on Amazon but I don't know if it will work on the SE400.
www.amazon.com/PlatinumPower-Transfer-Brother-Embroidery-Machine/dp/B073YJKCH2/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=brother+se400+embroidery+machine+USB+cord&qid=1617283000&sr=8-2
Hi can you download you own
Why didnt you try to embroider?
I didn't have the hoop or the right foot on the machine. It was just a video on how to transfer files.
Some files dont embroider well. Some have flaws in them.
Minds is a brother HE-240
Here's a link to the USB manual to use when you want to transfer files from the computer to the sewing machine. It's safe too. www.brother-usa.com/VirData/Content/en-US/HAD/Consumer/InstructionManual/XE3364-001-1_view_08.03.25.pdf
you should do more for us newbys
Sorry Kenneth. I have my machine packed up and ready to move to my new place. I don't know if I'll have enough room to keep recording videos there. Check out embroidery.com. She has a lot of great videos there under community and education.
I just want to print names on bonnets no embroidery cards
There's 5 alphabet fonts in large, medium, and small sizes programmed into the machine. It's probably all that you need for bonnets. The ABC's have the upper and lower cases plus the numbers and punctuations.
Number plz
Sending me an email again I lost it dang it or find me on Facebook sherrone boudreau I forgot klinger! Lol
