Thank you Bill, as I inherit contractor progress schedules for review from my clients. I see this issue over and over, one question for you: Now I know the out of sequence activities, what to do with them, and how does this affect my clients project and should i send the schedule back to the contractor to fix the issue? Seems like a straight forward yes, but would be nice to have your opinion. Thanks!

      Hi,
      I would do the following...
      - Ask the contractor to update the logics during contemporaneous schedule updates to reflect the situation
(For example, FS relationship may not be true anymore due to the way in which works are being carried out and might need updating the way in which actual works are being carried out SS or FF (with use of a lag) perhaps.
      - Keep a track of the changes being made to the schedule logic with an explanation during an update and share this info along with schedule updates.
(The baseline (as-planned) schedule shall reflect the planned duration and logic and the as-built schedule reflects the actual duration and logic in with the works were carried out. Keeping record/ track of the changes (contemporaneously) as work progress can be helpful in case of any forensic schedule analysis later)
      - Use retained logic whilst updating schedule and verify and validate the relevant effect of remaining activity on the successor relationship(s).
      - Consider splitting an activity, if the remaining works within that activity will not resume anytime sooner or could only be resumed following its predecessor logic is full filled.
(in case of splitting an activity, care shall be taken to assign activity ID for the (new) split portion of the activity taking into consideration activity ID in the baseline schedule for the original parent activity)
      - Review and verify the soundness of the CPM network logic for the remaining works.
      Hope this helps!
      Thanks

Dear Bill, thanks for your useful video, my question is that what would happen in case using overwrite instead of retained logic, would this filter still be valid(DD=remaining start), or considered by p6 (as per your filter )as a not out of sequence activity. I would be appreciate for your prompt response.

Hi - how do you create a layout to find out of sequence activities that are complete? I use Progress Override scheduling instead of Retained Logic.

He said he always uses Retained Logic. Which I'd recommend as well. You always want to have your tasks take predecessors into account.
