This reads as if Shaun converted Synth Shaun into an elaborate psychological revenge.
To be fair, it also could be the case that, as an old sick man living inside a crazy scientist bunker for 60 years, he had no clue what is "normal" outside a dystopia built on aluminum, white paint and transhuman slavery. I blame the fact that they ate "food suplements" in coded packets instead of proper sandwich cakes made with Mirelurk and the Milk of Human Kindness.

Yeah, in retrospect, "saving" synth Shaun is actually VERY CRUEL.
Father and synth Shaun are one of the GLARING flaws I still have a problem with in Fallout 4. These days, I'm just DONE with Fallout 4 and use a mod to enable fishing so that I can finally take a fishing trip from The Commonwealth, Nuka World and ends in Fah Hahbah.
