  • Finally got around to playing Battlestar Galactica Deadlock. The game is 6 years old now - is it still worth a punt?

One of the most perfectly "executed" games of all time. While a bit simplistic, the game released complete, bug free, and gave us a very concise and fun game and homage to the fantastic work by the BSG production crew. It's a challenging tactical and strategic game, without all the usual excess cruft of most 4X games.

BSG: Deadlock is so good. Underrated sleeper game in my opinion

I love the mechanic right out of the series of your ship having it's main offensive guns on the bow, but having to rotate 90 degrees to utilize your flak guns defensively whilst still not getting friendlies in the arc of fire. Great game overall. Reminds me a lot of the recent Terminator/Robocop games that were also made by a AA developper and really nailed the IP in a way major AAA studios hadn't.

Agree wholeheartedly - you just reminded me I need to play the new Robocop game!

Actually love this game My only gripe was it didn't allow for rolling of your ships. Even though there was a vertical aspect to the game You were still kind of stuck in a two-dimensional environment. It would have been good If you could roll your ships to protect the top if you were getting hammered from above.

One of my favorite Strategy games of all time! Finally gave me the opportunity to launch the colonial counter attack I always dreamed of from the TV series

I bought this game about a week ago just because my father loved Battlestar Galactica when he was a kid. I'm hoping he'll here the music when he gets home from work one day and just game for a few days

I feel like the combat style in the game is a very unique take on turn-based combat because you are never in full control during your turn. It's not like the opponent's actions pause while you demolish them during your turn and vice versa - but at the same time, it gives you time to think, so the learning curve doesn't require you to make snap decisions or totally grasp all the controls.
I hadn't watched the show before getting this game, and yet 100 hours of gameplay later, I'm still learning new things and having fun playing Deadlock, and I think a major component of that is how the combat is designed. I wouldn't be able to find something like it anywhere else.

My first meeting with this way of gameplay was the old game called Critical Mass from 1996 by Sean Connor. I instantly remembered that game when I started this. Its a neat system and it works so well with the 3D-space and creating these cinematic clips of the battles.

TLDV - yes, it is. It's interesting. What pissed me off though is the setting. Instead of having the tech from the rebooted series, you got something different, because it's supposed to take place during the original cylon war. But other than that, it's a good game.

They did a DLC, which let's you use the modern ships in Skirmish mode.

Ah much like Khan in the Mutara Nebula, you became trapped in 2 dimensional thinking. Nice review I just picked this up for Xbox while on sale. Started the campaign but plan to toy around with skirmish mode to figure out the ships and best tactics. Gonna get the DLC soon but no rush looks like a meaty game.
Would like to see ships from the second cylon war even with no story.

The modern ships pack has the mercury and Valkarie class battlestars and the modern basestar with viper mk7s and modern cylon raiders, though the raiders can't hack or launch missiles

It's a fun game that I continually enjoy. My only real problem is that there's no Cylon campaign. Real missed opportunity imo.

There was a browser game once too, I used to like it, I never got around to playing this, I'd love an open world version, somehow, Strategy games never feel big enough for me, which is the reason why i wonder if it's possible to do open world without having ppl attacking newbies or vastly inferior skilled

look the game has nothing wrong with its actually really really good. However due to the limitations on the license etc. it tends to get old quick if the game aloud mods and more freedom in regards to more ships and abilities ect it would be a timeless classic like home world

I like the game but was disappointed by the DLC that added the TV series era ships. I was hoping for more modern non-Battlestar and Basestar ships. More Corvettes, Frigates, Gunships, and so on. It makes absloutely no sense IMO for there not to be newer small and midsized warships designs. The smaller ships are faster and cheaper to produce so the idea no new designs appeared in four decades makes no sense to me.

I dig the game but I have some gripes, mostly the cheesy voice acting and the whimpy sounds of the colonial weapons, those guns should sound sharp and thumpy, they don't.

    "This game has good AI."
*Arachne shoots missiles into the butt of another Arachne*
    Yeah, right.
But its true that the AI keeps you on your toes, and especially with the expansion packs that add ship classes to both sides the Cylons have so many wildly different fleet compositions they can go for, that you really have to stay defensive until you are sure there arent any more surprises, and the fleets flexible enough so they can react to every type of attack either by defending or by shooting harder. The latter not always being possible.
