As much as I love this scene. How about this?
Scenario 1 - Both Battlestars take part in battle from start
      1. Galactica performs the Adama orbital drop, then returns to orbit.
      2. Pegasus jumps into orbit and performs its long range shots to take out Basestars. It is later joined by Galactica.
      3. Pegasus is manned adequately and provides its long range cover, thus the two Battlestars keep the Base ships at bay as they have done so before.
Scenario 2 - Pegasus arrives as it did above.
      1. This time Pegasus fires long range salvos, but also launches Vipers. All Vipers head for Galactica to defend it, whilst Pegasus keeps its distance. Seeing Galactica still take fire, Pegasus then TEMPORARILY moves to the centre.
      2. As Galactica limps away protected by Vipers, Pegasus also moves away from the Basestars, engaging its main batteries.
      3. Galactica's Vipers ascend from the planet and instead head for Pegasus to defend it.
      4. Pegasus repairs FTL drive.
      5. Galactica has jumped away already.
      6. Galactica Vipers land on Pegasus and the Battlestar Pegasus though damaged, jumps to safety.
Scenario 3 - Same as above, but with change
      1. Pegasus arrives saving Galactica.
      2. Instead of 4 Basestars, there are 14 Basestars.
      3. Given the overwhelming odds, despite taking out 3 Basestars from long range, Lee orders Pegasus in between Galactica and the remaining 11 Basestars.
      4. Adama now realises what his son is going to do. He calls all Vipers back to Galactica. Including Pegasus' Vipers (which have come to the battle).
      5. The Pegasus now remains to defend the Civilian ships breaking from orbit.
      6. Pegasus manages to take out another 3 Basestars leaving 8 remaining, but its FTL drive goes offline.
      7. Pegasus now engages the Lee Adama manoeuvre to sacrifice itself. This time as the Raptors jump away, Pegasus runs straight into the enemy fleet, all guns blazing on auto fire.
      8. Pegasus takes out a further 2 Basestars via a direct collision and explodes taking out another 5.
      9. Only 1 Basestar remains with the Cylons in shock having lost virtually all their fleet and watching the last civilian ships jump away.
My preference is for Scenario 2.

Because the operation of rescuing civillians from New Caprica was extremely risky, he decided to have Pegasus stay with the civillian fleet. But Lee wouldn't have been able to live with the thought that he could've saved his father's life and he didn't, even if he was following his father's direct orders. They were both trying to do the right thing. Just like Dee said to Lee, that he is more similiar to his father than he knows.

If Lee didn't violate his orders the civilian ships trying to leave the planet would have been destroyed with the galactica. He sacrificed the pegasus to save his father and the crew of the galactica and ended up saving the civilian fleet leaving new Caprica and destroyed 3 base stars in the process.
If he followed orders Adama would be dead, the crew of the galactica would be dead, the fighter pilots would be dead and everyone trying to escape new caprica would be dead.

The "thank you" has so many meanings, always gives me a heavy heart. It was Lee Adama's first and only true command of a battlestar, he's thinking her for that honour. It saved what was left of humanity from New Caprica, he was thanking her for saving them. It saved his father and he's thanking her for that and despite the Pegasus being a more advanced, hugely superior ship, he's thanking her for saving his true home - the Galactica. The final shot of the Pegasus emblem only being engulfed in fire to me almost feels like it is the ship saying you're welcome.

It wasn;t a sound military decision. I think the show makes this perfectly clear. Don't watch a 5 minute clip and think you know all the context of the show.
Lee just couldn't live with it, couldn't face the fact it was a suicide run for Galactica, it's crew, and possibly everybody on the surface. So he came back. It was a purely emotional decision.

Spacedock's video kinda just glosses over the entire affair. There are major flaws with his plans as well, including an incredulous Raptor yolo nuclear assault on two basestars which had their Raider complement. Raptors would have been destroyed before getting close to the Basestar.
Colonials didn't know there were four Basestars instead of two, so any plans before that point are moot. The situation *really starts* when four mega-toasters rock up instead of two, Galactica has taken heavy damage and Pegasus jumps into the fight crippling a mega-toaster in the process.
The main issue is that there was no way to extricate from the situation without losing a vessel, two if the Colonials weren't careful. The Galactica is going to be destroyed, the Pegasus cannot hold off four Basestars by themselves and flak isn't a perfect shield.
The Colonials aren't here to win the Battle of New Caprica and take it back, they're here to buy time for the civilian vessels to escape. Losing the strategically superior warship to preserve the superior command was the better long-term call, especially since the latter would have made better decisions than the one who authorized the former.

After the war, the Colonial Military scaled back significantly for a while (Tighs memories of meeting Adama aboard the freighter) after life stabilized in the post war Era new classes like the Mercurys and Valkyries were developed with the plan of having an entire BSGroup act as a rapid response unit. With the Cylons positions on the Galactica, surely the Pegasus could have taken out a 2nd Basestar with that forward battery, evening the numbers, yet Battlestars, even the old and battered down Galactica, were more powerful then a Cylon Basestar! Even in the 3 vs 2, the Battlestars would outgun the Basestars!
Besides that, the Pegasus was thé most powerful Battlestar: a Mercury Class. More of a Dreadnought, compared to the Galactica being a warship.
On top of that, Admiral Cain stripped other vessels and equipped the Pegasus with even more weaponry then it already had: the Pegasus was an absolute béast of a vessel!

The ascription of any particular tactic in warfare as 'terrorist' could be a) accurate (the tactic instills terror) or b) propaganda (the other guy does the bad stuff).
In war, there are tactics which preserve your own force structure and attrit the enemies, and there are tactics that cost you too many of your own for questionable attrition among the enemy.
Once you've chosen to fight and that the fight is existential, then to tie your hands behind your back by curtaining off strategies that could lead to victory might just be immoral.
That's not so true if the fight is not existential (win or die). But with the Cylons and the Colonials, the conflict had moved into what appears to be a war of extinction. Both sides would look to any sort of tactic or strategy that could weaken the enemy without costing too many friendly lives/vessels to be lost.
The Cylons are not motivated by notions of 'humanity' or 'compassion' nor are they likely to eschew cost effective or efficient strategies simply because they seem horrific to human values. And the humans are quite willing to do horrific things to survive (Season 1 : '33').

Honestly, this was probably one of the best ways the writers could remove the Pegasus from the show. Command decisions from Lee aside, having it go out in a blaze of glory to the sound of war drums was visually and emotionally spectacular.
Plotwise though, this was really a victory for the Cylons. Sure, they lost a few Basestars and the civilian fleet got away, but the Galactica suffered irreparable damage and the Fleet lost one of the two Battlestars defending it, taking with it their capability to produce additional strike craft. Adding on to that was the fact that the Pegasus was the only fully functional warship they had since the Galactica only had one flight pod and was missing a majority of its arms and armor. If it hadn't been for the Cylon Civil War, I'm not sure Galactica would've made it to Earth.

For those criticizing lee for sacrificing a superior ship to save ‘the bucket’, I hear you. But also remember that the last stand of Pegasus also kept the cylons distracted long enough for civilian ships on the ground to load up and evacuate before the bulk of the Cylon forces had time to redeploy and focus on what was going on down there. Galactica likely wouldn’t have held out much longer on her own, and if Lee hadn’t showed up then the base stars may very well have wiped out many of the civilian ships attempting to flee in a bombardment from orbit. Lee saved his father as well as the shows namesake ship, but he also likely saved many ships and thousands of civilian and insurgents on the ground as well. With humanity on the brink of extinction, all the lives saved were priceless and worth laying it all down for. As I said before, I don’t believe Galactica was in good enough shape to hold out as long as Pegasus did, especially not after that atmospheric free fall. Looking at it objectively, it had to go down like this. And let’s be honest, Pegasus made the cylinders pay one hell of a heavy price for their victory.
If any of you follow ‘The Expanse’, you’ll know that James Holden essentially did this in season 5 episode 10 when he put his ship into battle up against 5 Free Navy ships. He and his ship survived by dumb luck from a mutiny within the Free Navy task force, but he had still been willing to make the sacrifice to keep the military ships distracted while his crew on an unarmed ship got away. Like I said, look at it objectively and consider the big picture. I hated losing the Pegasus, but I know that Lee did the right thing all and all and I accept it.

I still wondered how FTL worked, because it was clear this thing was on a collision course

Two of my favourite BSG moments in the same episode. The Adama Manoeuvre and the sacrifice of the mighty Pegasus 😭😭

The beating a Battlestar can take is amazing for sure. We watched as Galactica had been pummeled on multiple occasions, surviving nukes at the worst, and yet she kept on trucking. Those ships would be a marvel of human ingenuity if real...

I think it's also down to what alloys and metals their hulls were made of. If a ship like Galactica can tank a nuke, then she's made quite literally of some REALLY tough stuff we don't have here on Earth.

Lee Adama's greatest act of incompetence in the whole series. He should have spent the rest of BSG in the brig.

This scene is when the Pegasus redeems herself for all of her sins and draws the fatal fire so that others may live.

Not just redemption but loyalty. She finally had a Captain worthy of her honor. She was not going to fail him while he needed her.

@@danielhaire6677 Oh, no, Cain was actually worthy of honor, too, if you watch Razor and get a different perspective on why she acted the way she did in the Galactica arc. Galactica *started* with a fleet and resources, pitiful as they were, but Pegasus was on her own with no help and no hope. Cain knew she had to be hard and harsh if she was going to keep her crew and her ship alive and she likely didn't like it one bit. Every day we have to triage our life and our situation to figure out how to decide and act and she had to worth with what she had with what experience she had. Her choices are probably the ones Adama had if he had NOT had his child and his best friend in his face while he oriented and acted. The Pegasus arc is essentially what Galactica's arc had been had they not taken the fleet along with them. The decisions Cain made were in our eyes horrific but if you look at it from another point of view you can see why she felt she needed to make a decision a certain way if the ship itself was to survive (and herself). Sometimes life is really ugly and we have to make terrible choices we'd otherwise never make.

One of the best scenes of all Sci-Fi.

This was really a tribute to the original Pegasus from 1978, you must remember she took on Baltar and his 3 base ships and saved the fleet. 😉
