Kinda do the same but I place them inside a small cardboard box below their grave. Like this :

I always take the corpse to the main safebase and burried them besides the others. I do 1 grave per characters I've lost. It's a thing I did and still do back when I was still learning the game.
When I first played Fallout 4, I sided with the Brotherhood of Steel and religious gathered the dog tags of all the fallen I came across and kept them in my room on the Prydwen. I did the same with Paladin Danse's power armor, weapon, and dog tags (but those got a special box in the room)

Find it unique that your previous character isn’t some sort of boss encounter. He got the same disease as everyone else and was put down all the same. What makes it impactful is the experience the player had with the character. To the new character you control your old character is some unfortunate survivor. To you… well. It was you
This is a really heart-wrenching perspective but so true
And thats for everyone. What I like is that we dont feel anything for killing them but since we are killing someone that was us we feel sad or upset but its ironic because every life here had to go to something then got infected but just because we literally felt how they went through it makes us cry

I once had a battle-hardened character, I sent her to Louisville to get some high-tier loot, which she did, but she later got bitten and went out in a blaze of glory. Months later with my new character revisited that cesspit of a town, bloodstains were still everywhere on the streets and at the corner of my eye I see a familiar-looking silhouette shambling around the road, It was my old character, now lifeless and became the very thing she was proficient in killing. I put her down with a stealth jaw stab, put the body in the trunk of my truck, drove back to base, dug a grave and made a crate next to it, washed all of the clothes she wore when she died, buried her in the grave, and placed her helmet and her beloved LMG on the grave.
At that point, even I was shocked by the fact that I felt kind of sad that she died even though she is just a character in the game. Rest easy now soldier, your legacy carries on.

@@Overthinking-rain i remember I had a world with friends but we role played where if you died, you couldn’t play on the server until everybody was dead. We survived for like 5 months, slowly losing people, one time we crash the van, killing one guy but the other made a last stand to give me and the 4 others I chance to live. Eventually it was down to me and another friend. We both decided that we would go on a suicide mission to clear out the rosewood prison. We were fighting for 2 hours against the horde, to the point where we retreated back to our base and we were fighting them there. They broke in and we were on the top of the apartment building, stuck. He had gotten bitten when he mistimed a swing, but somehow didn’t get swarmed. My friend told me “someone’s gotta get out” as he pulled out a bunch of Molotovs. I wished him good luck as he went down throwing fire at the horde. I ran as far as I could as our base was burning and I could hear his screams of pain. I found a old house outside rosewood, but a god damn bathroom zombie scared me and bit me. I sat there in awe for a couple minutes. I then went back and fixed up a car as my clock was ticking and drove to the cabin in the woods outside West Point. I spent my last day on earth just fishing, reading, enjoying a peaceful life. I finally shaved my guy and took out a bottle of bleach. I looked out to the pond one last time before drinking it and killing myself.

It reminds me of Dark Souls in the thematic sense that your character is the ultimate success of everyone's failures. You are the end of the road. That character had his journey and died valiantly, but his progress lives on through you. His armor and weapons have been honed by him, who in turn likely gathered them from someone else, who's story is the same. It's a tree of legacies that all funnel down to your character. You don't just represent you, you stand representing everyone who perished along the way, carrying a little piece of them with you.

I'm a veteran of Zomboid and I had a friend that was new and he got scratched after spending a whole day in the rain, so I told him to go into the shed and I was gonna give him everything he needed.
I brought him a mini fridge and put five days of fruit salad in it, 10 water bottles and a bunch of skill books he hadn't read yet and the final thing I did was hand him a bottle of bleach.
"If you get sick and it's not getting better, you don't have a cold, you're actually just turning."
After that, I barricaded him in and simply waited it out.
I told him it wasn't the flu. I had a zombie trapped in a well barricaded shed after that. Should've drank the bleach.
This has already happened to me in previous versions of the game. Zombies swarmed our home, I was the only casualty. They trapped me in a house and waited for me to get back so I could put myself down as they didn't have the heart to do it. Was harder than you think.

Your feet tremble as you round the corner of the concrete tomb. The dim and flickering light illuminates something familiar. A small blue hat. After your eyes slightly ajust, you see who is wearing it. Memories long past come flooding back as they turn towards you, face torn appart by decay. The gait is eerily similar to them when they were still human. You remember the smile they used to wear, their soothing voice that helped you stay sane during the hardest times of your lives.
To see them in such a sorry state is pure agony. How far a once bright soul has fallen due to a simple mistake.
They start shuffling towards you, their eyes filled with emptiness. But yet, there's still something there...
You recognize that look. The slight tinge of sorrow and remorse for what their body forces them to do.
You know what must be done. With a trembling hand, you take the bloodied hammer from your belt. With great hesitasion, you bring the hammer down on their head.
A sickening crunch fills the dull hallway. They drop dead. Truly dead. Freed from this mortal coil. Freed from this hell.
You take their fallen hat and wear it as a sign of respect. You lift their corpse, and with it, the guilt. You strain to carry them to your home. There, you dig a grave and put them in it with all of their gear. The cross in the backyard now bears the keychain and hat they always had on them.

"when the sun looms over near noon, many shadows are revealed. shadows of persons standing, some brandishing weapons and others apear to be fleeing. however, there are no people to be seen, no bodies standing nor laying, all is quiet. their shadow's frozen still as if everyone just... disapeared, and the shadows were left behind, alone and forgotten. the dark outlines of what once were people are etched into the ground, like paint, or chalk. but when out of curiosity you kick the ground chipping away the earth, the shadow remains. as the harsh sun continues to cast it's rays you stare harder, tired, for a brief moment you close your eyes. its then you hear sounds. screams, cries, yells, metal clashing metal, wood tearing apart. you imagine a scenario of events that you never before witnessed. you feel like you just felt what happened here, and then you open your eyes, you assure yourself that your mind was just wandering. as you gaze apon the area once more, the shadows remain and all is still quiet, as it always had been. you turn away to leave, your feeling unconfortable. as you start to walk away, you hear a voice, it sounds like multiple people speaking at once, in unison. "remember us, dont let us die here". you quickly turn around to confront the voice, but nothing is there. then you realize the shadows are gone, as if carried away by the wind, you turn back around and walk away. as you continue, a thought intrudes your mind, but its not yours, the thought echos "remember the fallen, our stories are forgotten" briefly. you live forever, as long someone remembers your name."
The Protagonist...
The tragedy of finding a lost friend in a zombie apocalypse... hope only truly dies when you see it with your own eyes.
This video always makes me feel a certain way, nothing else can make me feel like this. I always cry. Even the memes and it being a game cant distract me from the fact, that this video, together with the song, shows how fragile life is. It reminds me that we are temporary and that one day, I will lose what I love. I am truly dreading that day
I worry about that too from time to time.
Just try to do the right thing for yourself and as many people as possible while you're still around.
Also try not to think about death too much.
❤ Focus on what you have while you have it
"Don't worry"

Gets infected*
Oof, this hit me hard for no particular reason. I have to thank you, I've become extra sure not to repeat my mistakes.
Most important thing I find to do is whenever you walk into a room, always, always, always shove. It's saved me a countless number of times from the jump scare ambushes
"I'll make a different one"
I remember I was with a group on zomboid, lots of fun and giggles. Until one day a random herd of infected came and destroyed our little home at night. I remember jumping through a window so I can escape while hearing my friends shouting for help. I mean i didn’t have anything except a hammer you know? After that I couldn’t find the group so I gave up and went on my way. Fast forward a couple days I’m going through a wear-house not that far away from the incident. And they’re they were. 2 bodies just staring at the wall. Wearing the same clothes. With tears on my eyes I take them out more prepared with better gear on my belt. I go through their things. They still have the friendship bracelets on…with a tear in my eye I take them. I had a shovel on me so I buried them outside. I still miss them.
“To the fallen survivors”
I say.
Edit: yes I did have tears in my eyes that’s how sad it was
Thanks for the likes humans
You didn't have a choice there was honestly nothing you could've done except maybe remember those friends of yours
That's depressing.
"And there they were, 2 bodies just staring at a wall, wearing the same clothes"
Now that's a sentence you don't hear in a lifetime
@@gibbolivious7122 But now we have!
This legit sounds like a fucking apocalypse novel holy shit.
It feels like an alternate universe where ur suppose to meet ur other self but before encountering him it was too late
Holy fuck this is accurate asf. All that surviving just to die in a shitty way and then later your new character days, weeks, or even months later finds the old you. It's a tough kill depending on how attached you got to that character. Also beautiful song btw. The original and best version in my opinion.
¿We can only appreciate the fact that in the last seconds he puts his hat on? that's not heartbreaking this feeling is deeper.
This reminds me of The Walking Dead Webisodes man where they show the backstory of a random zombie in the main show. It felt like this, a stupid brainless zombie roaming around had a sad backstory before succumbing to the infection. It really breaks your heart.
I just lost my best character today. It was due to me being too cocky and trying to pick up my welders mask with a horde of zombies on my tail.
I played as him for about 20-30 irl hours, or around a month in game(I had double day length enabled). Funny enough he had the same hard hat as your character, I havent found him yet but I promise that I will. Im gonna find him even if it costs me 10 characters.
RIP Elliot Harris 2022-02-04 Lost due to a stupid mistake.

@@hellocancer4615 Did you find him at the end? I really hope you did
sometimes one stupid mistake is enough to die, i lost a character because i tried to grab a shotgun when i already had too much weight, because of that i couldn't jump the fence
I had to jump a fence to get to my house, but some zombies were chasing me and I had too much weight, I dropped the shotgun while walking but I was exhausted and couldn't run
Soon I had a horde of zombies behind me and they caught up with me
"This is how I died" I thought when my character couldn't jump the fence
@@Overthinking-rain A real shame. Mine died too two bites on the neck at once. Didn’t even have a chance to fight back
It’s been 6 months. Did you ever find him?

@@Kagarine54 please don't hurt me again
My mind can only handle so much.
And then the next video "when you meet your third older zombified character on Project Zomboid"
Guys abort abort, prepare plan B he might do it.
This video finally got me into Zomboid around 10 months ago. Just the concept of being able to meet a character you once loved and played was amazing. I knew I had to get it as soon as I could.
It's tragic really, the character which you played probably have no association with your previous one, thus making him a stranger.
But at the bottom of your character's heart, it knows that familiarity.
What I think is absolutely amazing about the encounter is you sympathize with the Zed and you get to be the one to put him out of his misery and into the afterlife he deserved. Thank you.
I like how you made your character watch in awe as it shambled towards him as if he's like "No... It can't be.. Its you." And he hesitates and steps back before killing it like "I'm, sorry.."
That hit me on a whole another level... We used to play this game with my ex-bf... Now i can not even dare to open many games without encountering with our good old memories. The moment he saw his old char, i felt it...
Fucking oof relatable
Same. I have so many games I’ve played with my ex. I let her design cars for me in gta and rocket league. I let her make classes in COD and she had saves on most of my old Zelda games. We were together 5 years and now everything reminds me of her. Fucking sucks getting off of work and logging into a game late at night and then getting smacked in the feels.
@@ekothesilent9456 bro you got to clear that shit out of your life or it’s going to haunt you

" Our enemy was ruthless. Efficient. But they weren't nearly fast enough. For you had already passed the torch. "

This just make me realize something, that everybody is their own protagonist of their story, when we see other people, lets say, in an alternate world where zombie apocolypse has been going on for years, we'll just think either they're friend or foe, without realizing how many things they've gone through. And you know what, they probably have a more interesting life than you do, and when we see a random zombie we won't think much of it, but maybe that zombie have lived through a life full of excitement and mystery, something that you would think should be a Film Series or a movie. It's really a strange feeling, caring for someone that doesn't have any effect on our everyday life and how you do things, but thinking about it is very interesting, some of us probably think that we ourselves are not worthy to be a main protagonist, but we are, our lifes are more interesting than we thought, it's like The Truman Show, no matter how boring someone's life may be, if you focused your view on that everyday boring life it'll become an interesting one, for example : In that man/woman boring life if something exciting happens we will too feel the excitement because it's rare for them to experience something like that. So I'm saying this because our lives are more unique than we thought, and for everyone is different, and if there are some same exact life, like literally the same life, the same events happening and stuff even though they're totally different people, it will still make an interesting plot.
Beautiful
This is true for real life as well
This is touched on in the book World War Z, when they’re mowing down zombies at the Battle of Hope.
This feeling is documented, it’s known as “sonder”. It’s that feeling you get when you realise everyone around you has a life as in depth as your own, even me writing this comment, and you reading it.
Its like seeing your best friend being a zombie.
"Was I a good survivor in my lifetime?"
No son you weren't.
You were the best god damn survivor they ever had
Having to put down a character that you spent hours on is definitely the saddest thing that can happen in this game for me
It's crazy how you can easily make the case that this video caused the boom of popularity that project zomboid got, like if you look at steam analytics, you see that the playerbase blew up right after this video

I remember I was playing PZ and on my 1st run, I was somehow doing phenomenal, got some sick shit, then died, and that success has barely ever been replicated in all my future runs, but one day, on my far later run, I’d a great chance encounter with a zombie who cornered me, so I killed it with not a shred of mercy, and looting it was like opening up a treasure trove, already I knew something was up but I paid no mind, but when I recognized some of the items from my 1st play through, I looked more carefully at the body, and that’s when, like a falling bowling ball, it struck me, after many deaths, I have finally returned to my bestest self after creating and discarding other selves, I was glad and sad, for now I know I can reclaim the subpar glory of some of my past lives, but to do that I must hunt them down and slay them as though they meant as much as a common zombie
This made me feel sad.
I like how you try to survive in this game, and when you die... It's over, no savegame no reloads, you lose everything.
In my first days, I didn't even know that you can continue on the same map you died on and grab your stuff back.
It’s crazy how something so small like this clip can sell so many copies of a game.
That emotion hits harder than that hammer he's using.
That's what i love about this kind of mechanic
i remember playing dungeon crawl stone soup
i get on some floor and see the ghost of my first lizard who died by bullshit ,jeez i didn't even want to fight it
knowing the story of the zombie as yourself, knowing the pain and suffering the zombie has gotten through along with you, knowing full well that he is you, and knowing full well he want's death. You have the sad option to join him to bear his pain, or end his misery

If you play and die long enough you can get an entire Knox Country filled with good loot from all your past survivors

This gets to me in many undescribable ways possible
“You left me…”
“…You changed…”
Imagine if they used the suicide mod after killing the zombie protag, then went back as a third person pretending to be someone else or one of the characters friends. That would be even more depressing. To think about someone having to kill their zombified best friend and not be able to take it anymore so they off themselves away from the group, next to their best friend who they spent eternity with. After all. Eternity is only however long you're alive. So to the dead it's over, but the memories lived on.

I always imagine with the NPC update, if I died in a looting run, I will able to respawn as a NPC in the group that player created a few days later, and have a conversation with NPCs like "Jonah haven't return for 3 days now..." "I will look for him..." After killing my original character then I can say "I found him and.... I put him down..." "He was a good man..."
