As always Nigel, absolutely love your videos and your personal input on everything. It's been so advantageous in the start of my Bonsai journey. . . I visited my local nursery today and was super excited to get some small Lemon Cypress, Dwarf Pomegranate and a Cotoneaster. My journey with Bonsai is just beginning as I inherited a couple tree's from a lifelong family friend who unfortunately lost his battle with liver cancer a couple months ago. I'm inspired to keep his memory lasting through the art of Bonsai. Thank you for all that you have provided to this wonderful community!
I like the thick trunk and the mature bark! Amazing that the jade grew that much in winter. Looking forward to the future development! 😊 I am sure it will grow into a great tree! 🌳
Nigel I can’t express how much I respect your patience and dedication. This jade is absolutely amazing I think succulents make amazing bonsais and it looks so good that pot
Great selection you snatched up! I can't wait to get myself some pots from Sophie, I absolutely love her glazes and style, she is a great potter indeed. Thanks Nigel!
Its always good to go back to your Jades Nigel. They are looking great as always. Mine are still happily recovering and sprouting new growth inside. They have a big front window so don't sulk too much :)
Very nice, cute little pots! Jades and succulents growing nicely! We have hurricane force winds up here!! The wind yesterday and today has been crazy! I won't mention the freezing rain and snow LOL No work and no school today(Monday) Because of the weather. Temperatures are -4C to -2C... Hopefully this storm calms before it hits you. Very yucky. I had to put food out for the birds. Ice covered everything. There's like 10 Robins in my vehicle shelter. I've been trying not to frighten them.
Good decisions for the development of that jade bonsai. I can imagine that it resembles a Baobab tree. Appreciated the update on the succulents. Are you going to put the "small bonsai bench" on display at any of the shows? I really like the creativity used in this bench project.
Fabulous Succulent Sunday - love your jadework and it constantly gives me inspiration with my own. Regarding the short thick branch on the left, could you not take a wood file and give it some taper? I know it would look unsightly for a while, but eventually form bark and be more in keeping with the rest of the branches.... just a thought 🤔
@@TheBonsaiZone they die back if you leave the exposed part open. I use Elmers Wood Glue - it seals the wound but unlike super glue, isn't absolutely permanent and will eventually wash off on time. I use it on my Adeniums too. Thanks Nigel.
Beautiful work! Question for you… when hard cutting a tree like this, do you want the tree plump and full of water or dry? What does the mother tree want and how will the cuttings respond to being hydrated? I just picked up an old Gollum that needs a hard prune as it’s falling over and quite ugly as-is. It’s well hydrated but the soil is bone dry. Thanks for the work you do!
Nigel, I think it highly likely that your Pencil Cactus is actually a Dancing Bones succulent… Hatiora salicornioides, whose blooms are indeed yellow-orange. I have several of them. The flowers of the Pencil Cactus (which has very poisonous sap) are pinkish-white. Both these plants are often mislabelled. Do some Internet research to make doubly sure! LOVE what you’ve done with your babab-acious Jade!
Hello Nigel, hope you're well! I have two question: How much stress does a preparation for and a participation in a bonsai show have on a tree? And if so, what can be done to mitigate this? Could you explain your approach in a video sometime? Thanks...take care.... Corey
Showing a tree can disrupt it's training schedule, but generally a tree that is in a refinement stage will be closer to show ready than a tree being developed. Thanks, I'll talk about this!!
@@TheBonsaiZone thank you....what made me think of this stress on a tree was how careful you are with where you move a tree, depending on light and temperature. But what happens, for example, if you show a tree in a bonsai show in South Florida?
How often do you water? I had 3, down to 1. Watered at the same time. Was watering every 6 weeks or so over winter. It's only just warm enough to go on the balcony outside, but I'm hesitating on increasing the watering, even with buds sprouting. It's in a 4 inch terra cotta, in succulent mix with extra perlite and some bark peices in it.
You can use the leaves as a guide for when you need to water. When the leaves begin to shrivel up just a bit, it's time to water. Water thoroughly when you have a sunny day and try and shake out the excess water from the pot. The leaves should plump up again and then the cycle continues. So much depends on the weather, the pot, the roots, the light etc.
They are dormant for the winter, leafless and I don't water them. They should wake up in spring and begin to grow once again. I hope they continue to do well!!!
I think i killed my jade. Did a re pot and big root prune. I left i hanging in the garage for one week to try and callous over the big cuts, misted leaves every day. It really dried out, planted it about a month ago ( in Australia) and have been lightly watering but nothing has happened, still looks pretty sad. Any thoughts? Did i do something wrong
I'm not that big a fan of styling unrelated trees to look like baobabs. I have seen too many beautiful jades that have naturally grown into shapely bonsai trees with no chopping and minimal pruning. Jade plants are beautiful in their own right. There is little need to try to turn them into something else.
Jades even in nature have their own style, but it is not very tree like, more of an upright bush. I think the jades as bonsai need a more tree like style to make them special to avoid the houseplant look they can get if left to their own growth habits?
@@TheBonsaiZone True, in nature. But I have seen many jade trees as old potted plants that were perfect little trees. all you need to do is restrict them to a single trunk for the first six to eight inches then they naturally branch out and make a slightly weeping canopy.
Solid advice on shade-sun transitioning. I think many people are not aware of sunburn risk when moving outside!
You have to watch your own skin too, I burn easily!!

Your prickly pear looks like it is about to bloom!! I can't wait to see.
If it does, I'd like to know his secret!
Mine is 5' tall now, and has never bloomed. Which sux cause I want to try the fruit!
always love when you post about your succulent bonsai. they're seriously so special!
Love the african music style choice! It was a bop!
Thanks!!!
I have two jades in the front yard that are 7' balls... Of all your jade videos, this one just gave me the inspiration to style them.
I'm weird. Lol

Wow, warm by you. 34F/1C right now at 6am this morning with a fine snow falling. Cool pots that you bought. Great color on them.
shaping up nicely. its always fascinating to see these plants heal cuts, especially large wounds. Sophie is beyond talented.. lovely little pots.☀️🤩☀️
Couldn't agree more!
After seeing those pictures of baobabs it definitely looks like that long trunk will go perfect with the baobab look 😁 good stuff Nigel
Love the amount of branching you're getting with the main apex😍
I can't wait to see the Jade in the far future!
That portrait is very interesting and strangely funny
Indeed!
Nice work on the Jade. Your Prickly Pear cactus will develop a nice trunk on it. Great updates.
Thanks 👍

It might be possible. Jades tend to die back to the next ring if you damage a section too badly. I'll have to test it on a tree and see what happens!
