I am a HUGE fan of the new GM Colorado and canyon trucks. They knocked them out of the park. And that zr2 is amazing. Serious competition to a Tacoma for sure.
I just bought the 2024 ZR2 Colorado (not the trail boss model). Love it, semi retired now at 55, ready to hit the road and do some adventures with ZERO time schedule !!!
Lol I remember this guy getting his old ram stuck on purpose to see if he really had 4wd with the auto button it was then I knew he was a truck guy for the people lol
This and the GMC AT4X are the only mid size trucks that I would consider to replace my Jeep Gladiator Mojave. Fitting 35” from factory, awesome suspension and a great motor with power. Not to mention I think they look great.
These are some awesome trucks. The gripes I have are few. One thing GM should've done is add more horsepower to Bison, considering it's the crown jewel of the segment and has the added weight and rubber. 310hp is barely enough. Another thing into take into consideration is the hydraulic bumpstops only come standard on ZR2. You have to select them as an option if you're purchasing the GMC version. Finally, GM should've put the spare on the passenger side instead of causing a considerable blindspot for the driver.
@@betweenthepines4000 Indeed. People think it's struggling because it's a small engine. But it doesn't rev any higher than the 5.3 in my previous 04 Silverado did. Which is 2,000 - 2,500 when accelerating from a dead stop and about 3,000 - 4,000 when getting up to speed to merge into traffic on the interstate. I love this truck and this package, I think they knocked it out of the park. I struggle to understand how anybody could buy TRD Pro or Trail Hunter Tacoma when this exists. I do agree with the gear ratio thing though, 342s with 35s is ludicrous. I believe the Bronco Sasquatch package with 35s comes with 430 gears, as well as an engine that makes more power. I'd love to be able to buy one myself, but I'm not in that tax bracket.
4.10/4.30 from factory would be a game changer for the truck itself, overall power and torque etc. I bet it would be really fun with 4.56/4.88 and stay in its power band and actually keep in over drive 8th gear on the highway.
does it not struggle now? I can see that being an issue. I run these same exact tires on my Lexus LX570 and it runs a slightly shorter 8th gear and slightly taller axle gear so the overall ratio is the same. It does have to gear hunt a bit unless you are doing like 80. Before i bought the LX570, I test drove a normal Colorado ZR2 with the 33's, and it really didnt feel any stronger down low than the 5.7L.
The gear ratio thing is really dumb and its not just GM. Toyota is the same with the new Tacoma, Land Cruiser and GX. Its actually one thing that would push me toward the Ranger Raptor and its factory 4.27 axle ratio and the 10 speed. Not only is the axle WAY deeper, but so is the 1st gear in the 10 speed. If you planned to run 35's or larger than having those shorter factory gears is super helpful, especially since the trucks have lockers from the factory. The GM trucks trying to turn a .65:1 8th, 3.42:1 axle on 35" tires is gunna be a strain. Hell, even the regular 2.3 and 2.7L Ranger has 3.73's. The Raptor might not be quite as good out of the box but I really think its a better platform to build off of. A small lift and some 35's and it will be a monster. And just FYI, I run these same tires on my truck. They are not true 315/70R17's. I had a set of 315/70R17 KO2's and a set of 285/70R17 KO2's, and these Goodyears were nearly identical in tread width to the 285/70's and a good inch narrower than the 315/70's. They run more like a 285/80R17 if that was a real size. They are also super light at 52lbs which was the same weight as my 285/70 KO2's. So this truck is not working that hard to turn these compared to a real 315/70 or 35x12.5. Not saying that is a bad thing, but when it comes time for someone to replace the worn out factory tires and they decide to go with a different brand 315/70R17 that weighs 70 or 80 lbs and is full width, its going to be very noticeable.
I think it was just streamlining their engine production. Last year aside from WTs everything was the turbo max, they just decided for this MY to kill the base 230hp engine (that had different block and internals).
I'd take one of these Colorado ZR2 Bison's. I quite like the looks of these newer models, they have that serious/tough look to them. I like that blue and the yellow. My mother has the older 2020 Colorado Z71 with the 3.6l V6 in orange. She loves the truck and the orange color. There's only two other Colorado's in our area in the same orange and one of them was the 2019 model she originally wanted from the dealer she got her 2020 from. The other orange Colorado is a ZR2 version with a light rack. :)
Needs a better low range ratio , axle ratio , high strength steering system , high strength front CV shafts , steel rear drive shaft . Shorter wheel base as well .
Everything about both the regular Colorado ZR2 and the Bison addition are great except the 3.42 gears. I don’t care that it has 430 pound ft of torque and it does just fine, putting the same gear set in your Flagship Off-roader that you have in your base 2WD model is not very smart when you’re trying to cater to dedicated off-road enthusiasts. I know Chevy has to meet gasoline economy standards and all but that didn’t stop Jeep with the Gladiator
I have thought about one of these to go with my power wagon for shorter trips. I would go with the GMC AT4X and not get the AEV package. I would add the winch and extra skid plates my self. I have a GMC Sierra with the 2.7 and really like that motor. I would just delete the rear seat as it is really no much good for anything as none of them are in the midsize platform.
My mother has the 2020 Z71 Colorado and at 6ft even I fit in the back seat fine. Of course anyone over 6ft would probably be uncomfortable. Not the best for all adults but perfectly fine for picking up grand kids that want to ride along. My Silverado also has the 2.7 and I've been liking it quite a bit since I've had it. I've been running the over-sized PPE filter on mine.
where I'm from, front lockers are the wimps way out. Ok for rear lockers but learn to drive off-road before you get front lockers! They are great and a lot of the the local youtubers run them but only use when things are dire. It's a rock crawling thing really. Stock truck in this form...nice bits but at what cost? It will end a mall crawler unfortunately.
I think in a perfect world I would want a torsen LSD front diff that could be fully locked. Something like my power wagon has for its rear differential.
The bed-mounted spare in the ZR2 Bison essentially makes the truck nearly useless as a pickup truck. The bed is smallish as it is, then the spare tire takes up much of the load space. Dumb. The 3.42:1 gearing with the 35" tires is dumb, too. One would be much better off buying the "standard" ZR2 and adding some extra skid plates to it. And, just how many truck owners can afford to buy a $50-$70K new 4WD truck and then actually go beat the hell out of it off-road. Most of these type trucks that I see are being driven by "shopping mall 4-wheelers" who could drive where they go in a Corolla. I spent over a half-century living in some of the toughest 4WD country in North America. What you saw most of in the backcountry were older, used 4WD's with a few modifications to make them as capable as this truck would be in most off-road use. For years, I drove a only modestly modified Jeep XJ Cherokee that would go anywhere the ZR2 Bison would go.
very much agree the 3.42 gearing does not make much sense. But I would assume that they didnt want to have to modify their driveline. the 2.7L turbomax comes with the 8 speed and 3.42 gears on every application including the 1500 silverado. But it would of been nice to see GM switch it up or this model. At the end of the day, It's a very capable truck, will the average buyer be willing to trash their 60k truck through the bush probably not. But you can certainly have some good fun with it.
The zr2 bison is really nice. I have seen 2 in person but have not driven one. Up i my neck of the woods. These trucks are 86k, so you are kinda flirting with full size truck prices.
you are 100% paying for all these exclusive features. It's not a cheap truck but if you don't need a full size truck, this is about as good as it gets.
That truck should come stock with a winch from the factory your already paying 60k plus why not just include it they need to change that tail pipe it hangs way to low
Obviously the Chevy is extremely capable. But Ranger is $3,000 cheaper. Ranger easier to keep it in its power band and better high speed. Chevy wins with rock crawling. But on Road Ford wins because of Fox shocks. V6 turbo vs 4 turbo? V6 wins.

The 310hp is fine. If it can push my heavier Silverado with ease some extra rubber and a couple of rock guards isn't going to way it down much.
The torque is what you will come to appreciate. Probably drives a lot like my Jeep Gladiator Ecodiesel, smooth and torquey.
