  • In this plein air gouache tutorial, we investigate what happens when you paint drab colors over a bright highly saturated underpainting. We're going to be using James Gurney's "Iron Triad" which is prussian blue, red iron oxide and yellow ochre over a bright cadmium orange underpainting. The results are fascinating! We also put plenty of focus on techniques like color mixing for shadows and how to get your tonal values and planes correct and much more. If you're new here my name is Danny Sabra. I am a self taught artist. I do a lot of #oilpainting, #pleinairpainting, #gouache and #watercolor painting, urban sketching, #penandink drawing and many other things! I upload tips on #paintingforbeginners and other subjects related to art and creativity. I like to do #landscapepainting, plein air, alla prima, as well as portraits of people and animal portraits. I believe every person has a creative voice that matters. and my goal is to empower everyone to share their creativity with the world! Have you tried an underpainting before?

Dude, I’ve been wanting to try this for a while now. I’ve seen some painting where it’s apparent that this was done. I think it’s a great way to give the painting a little more energy without using any obnoxiously saturated colors in the palette that you use to paint the image. Thanks for the reminder to test this out!

It’s really cool how it affects the other colors isn’t it? Kind of like using two extremes to create balance.

I really like the result. You managed to convey the transparency of the air, sun glare and contrasts. I tried to draw with underpainting, but the results were much sadder 😅

Thank you so much. Very kind. I really enjoyed making this painting. I’ve definitely had my bad paintings too! It takes practice and very time I use a different color it really plays with my mind a bit! What color did you use when you did an underpainting?

You are very kind. I really enjoy this triad of colors. I feel I’m still learning how to handle Prussian blue.

Is the bright orange color also gouache? Or is it an acrylic paint?

It’s acrylic paint. Gouache would’ve reactivated so you need something that is water based but stays dry like acrylic or casein. I have used gouache before but mixed it with acrylic medium to get it to stay. It’s not economical but it works in a pinch.
