You have made me want to read Brittany’s book. I found Robbie’s documentary was so good. The David beckham one was goof

I think you would enjoy the Britney book - it was another fascinating account of a time we both remember well.

such an articulate review, Jack! I watched a Ronnie O’Sullivan documentary recently which spoke about the pressures of fame and perfectionism, it wasn’t so much in the same vein as what you describe here but I do think it illustrates your point. I’m looking forward to reading Britney’s book. the sentence about staying 17 forever caught my breath a little bit!

Thanks Amelia - I have just been seeing so many of these stories, particulalry from the nineties and early 2000s and the similarities are so stark. I just think about how dangerous it was for some of them and how lucky it is that some of them are still here to tell their stories, given how it worked out for poor Amy Winehouse. That was such a tragedy.

I can’t imagine being famous especially as a child. But at what cost.. that is a great thought. I am so glad that I didn’t grow up with social media. Feel like I would be the same.. looking back at my younger self 🤷‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ really interesting!

Oh, me too Sandy - I am grateful every day that I was able to grow up before the internet and well before social media.

Great review! Now I don't have to read it, but could still hear the juicy details :)

The Brittany Spears situation and conservatorship reminded me of how a very similar thing happened to Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys.

I watched a film about Brian Wilson a couple of years back and did not realise just how bad things got for him. There are definite similarities.

Hello Jack, that was an awesome video! I have mixed feelings about Britney Spears, and celebrity memoirs in general, but you bring up very important feminist ideas. Women are given impossible standards to live up to. And the paparazzi and social media can be brutal and were brutal to both Brittany Spears, and Amy Winehouse. I watched the documentary on an airplane about Amy Winehouse, and was shocked and dismayed at how she was treated. I don’t know the other person you were talking about, but I did read a memoir recently by Matthew Perry, who recently passed away, and it was very unnerving. Happy new year friend. Aloha.

Happy New Year lovely Marilyn - thank you! I have been thinking about reading the Matthew Perry book since he passed away but not sure as I’ve heard some not great things about it in the way he comes across. I hope the year has started well for you!

Hi Jacq 🙋🏻‍♀️, I was so interested to hear your thoughts. I wasn't sure about Brittany Spears ' book , but I will definitely read it now.
Here in the States, she got all the blame for the break up with Justin Timberlake! They were sort of American Musical Sweethearts , essentially because they were in the Mickey Mouse Club when younger. I don't think it was know that they lived together. I always felt all eyes were on Britany as it was said the couple had never been intimate. When they broke up HE did all the talking, acting the victim, making, accusations & wrote a song with a video starring an actress who looked like Britney. I am glad she is speaking out. I also cried when she had her breakdown. Could not believe cameras kept rolling!!!
Oh Amy 😢. The press & people just kept on her. I never understood why people tried to make a joke of her. Bless her. Thanks for linking the Podcast.
Sorry I went on. Always wondered why everyone turned on Britney & Justin was left alone.

I think the whole Britney and Justin thing is just another example of the misogyny that is rife in the media. He also ruined Janet Jackson's career and yet still managed to have a thriving career himself. I always liked his music and him, but discovering that he has done some awful things to people! Poor Amy - I must re-watch the documentary but it broke me the first time. Poor young woman. Thanks for your thoughts as always Kelly.

I'm not sure the media is any kinder today. Everyday my YT feed contains at least one vid demonizing Meghan Markle and glamorizing Kate Middleton. I think about the enormous pressure placed on them and how that family will never recover. Taylor Swift has been very vocal about the misogyny inherent in how she is criticized, demonized and ridiculed. I also think of all the actresses that appear on "did they/did they not" have plastic surgery or the public criticism older actresses/models are subjected to when they dare to look their age.

I think you are right, sadly, that the media is still a cruel institution. I think the biggest change is probably in the reactions of the general public to these things - I think we are far more aware as consumers of the arts and media of the fragility of mental health and how these young people are treated and the risks involved, though that doesn’t make it much better. I also think today’s pop stars and celebrities have a direct way to connect with fans and talk to them through social media, whereas, back then, everything went through the mainstream press and the only rebuttal celebrities had against stories was through press releases and press interviews. Their whole public persona was at the mercy of the press. Interestingly, Prince Harry just won his case against the Mirror regarding phone hacking which wasn’t supposed to happen again after the News of the World scandal. The mainstream media just continues to treat people’s lives as fair game for their gossip columns and will go to criminal lengths to do so. Terrible.

@@spreadbookjoy I totally get your point about the role of social media. Although with social media, celebrities need to be on their best behavior at ALL times. Everyone with their smartphone can function as the paparazzi. Grateful for my anonymity!
