- Quick drive on some snowy and Icy roads in the 22 Sport Wheels/tires. Not the solid footing I expected. Should I change to the 20s for our road trip?
Be sure to see the FOLLOW UP VIDEO in the same conditions with the R1T on 20s: • Snow Mode? R1T First D...

I drove Rocky today the R1T and NO SLIPPING. But I did notice to Tuesday when I drove Rosie it was a little bit more slippy. No snow in the forecast for the drive.
Always with the perfectly timed videos!
Nokian tires better get those 21” tire options ready soon!
I have an R1S in Minnesota with the 20” ATs. We haven’t had any “real snow” yet…but what we got about the same amount you did in your video. Mine handled it better than any vehicle I’ve ever owned or drove. The weight keeps it planted, the all terrain tires are snow peak rated and they really shined. The 4 motor instant torque control made the white powder feel like some sort of illusion because the road felt like it was dry.
I'm happy to hear that. I think the tires make a lot of difference. Note that there wasn't a lot of snow, but the roads were very slippery as can happen sometimes. I lived in Minnesota for a couple of winters, I know you know what I mean. :). Thx for watching and commenting.
I'm in Minnesnowta as well.. How has it been?
As tropical resident I've always wanted to experience snow. It seems calm, quiet and relaxing ... Love your content, Scott. Electric Vehicle still considered as luxury cars in my country, it's way above my paycheck to be able to buy it one. Hopefully it will get cheaper overtime
I hope the cost will come down as well. I know it's a luxury and I'm hoping that our experience will help further the adoption of EVs so that there will be more and then the price will come down. Where do you live?
@@RivianDad I live in Indonesia. Around 10 years ago our minister already made prototype of electrical vehicle but next government didn't approve the vehicle to be mass produce due to it didn't Pass emission test...😆😆
Wow. I can’t wait to see the video of the 01 tea with the 20s.
As soon as Robin gives it up! :)
That truck is BEAUTIFUL
Thanks! Hard agree. :)
Should I swap in the 20s for a long drive? I'm thinking yes.
will you need to take it in to a SC to have the R1S calibrated for the 20s? Or is that something you can do yourself?
@@DavidLeee You would imagine that is necessary. Not just because of the calibration, but also because of the graphic of your vehicle in the screen. When you swap them out, you would want the visuals in the screen to reflect what you have installed. Obviously, if there’s torque adjustments that go along with the different tires, than you would want those too. This is a 3.8 ton SUV on slick tires, I have to imagine that the all purpose is already calibrated for snow, but this is the best it can do with these tires.
I feel like lots of folks will want to see this one.
it was a last-minute video but hopefully there is some good info! Thanks!
Thanks for sharing! If I understood right, you two drove in both 20's and 22's. Curious--what drive modes were you in, and were you at 48psi?
I have the R1T with 20s and the R1S has 22s. They are both in all purpose normally. 20s sit at 48psi. 22s at 45. I keep them inflated to that.
I took my R1S into a field with 4" of snow, not frozen solid underneath, and quickly got stuck. I started to slide down the hill when i tried to get out. I lost all faith. I have the 22" Pirelli's on it. Should i have a winter tire? One problem with that is that we do go above 45 degrees sometimes in the winter. I love the vehicle otherwise, but this was disappointing. I thought i had the ultimate winter vehicle.
So it performed like every other all-season tire... Just like on most cars and every single rental car. Good to know!
With that small amount of snow, those 22’s are fine. As others have stated, the Regen is literally locking up the wheels. For all the winter testing Rivian did pre launch, it’s hard to imagine they didn’t experience this issue. Hopefully a update is coming very soon.
Yeah, but also it's the sliding from the weight. A few people have mentioned they slid into a curb on slippery roads. Something that woudn't normally happen in a lighter car. Happened to me also. But having a snow mode and good tires would help. I did drive the R1T on the 20s last night and posted a video about that as well: (ruclips.net/video/Ky-eWcxTzPg/видео.html) Thanks for watching and commenting!
Sure but the weight can actually help with snow tires, it gives the soft rubber more grip
It's not the size directly, but the tire. Those are 'all-season' Pirelli Scorpions and they are not recommended for anything beyond occasional light snow. As in they won't completely screw you, but you'll still have to take it slow.
@@franksmartin1 I don't think i buy that. Climbing a hill the weight might help, but coming down one it is a detriment.
I live near you and dropped my daughter off at DSA this AM. I literally slid straight sideways at a stop sign by the Oneida shops. I have an R1T on 20”s. Thankfully there wasn’t a car there, just the curb. The curb stopped me! It was an ice rink. Thinking about the Nokians….
wow! I've got some other tires on the way (not Nokians, although I want to try those) so I'll let you know how they do in the snow. But, I think it was just downright slippery today, although slid more downhill than I wanted. I wasn't recording but once we slid to the curb like you. Eeek! Thx for your feedback.
Do you think that is because of the Pirelli brand or just the heavy vehicle or the braking?
@@scotteebee Probably the weight. But I’m not sure how sticky the pirellis are in the ice. I was going about 5mph and slid straight sideways so wasn’t momentum. The neighborhood streets in Denver are quite sloped to the curb so that was a factor. But I slid at every stop sign in the neighborhood. My other car is a Model Y and we have TOYO Opencountry AT3s on it. Also incredibly slippery in fresh snow/ice.
@@HippocraticHustle Thanks for the feedback. My 4Runner originally had Pirelli's I changed to Michelin tires and they handle the icy roads pretty well (i.e. so much better).
I have a set of Nokias LT3’s on order. I slid more today than ever in any other vehicle, and that was just in the ‘hood vs the usual which is extensive ski season mtn driving. I’ve got the 20’s, dialed in regen down to “standard”, feathered the brakes. It helped. But not enough for comfort. Switched back to our old truck and immediately felt better for us and other drivers on the road. Snow/ice mode is one need, as are snow tires if you’re gonna be out there for the winter duration in the steep country IMHO.
I parked my MYLR on my driveway near Boulder earlier today. I put it in park, and I slid right down the driveway and into the street.
Oh no! Hope you didn't damage anything. I'm actually glad to hear that I wasn't the only one sliding around. Thx!
@@RivianDad Thankfully no damage, just a bit scary/funny. I did eventually manage to get it into the garage with a running start.
oof, there was a lot of sliding right there at the end pulling into your driveway. curious to know how the 20s do in those conditions.
Yeah, slippery. I'll do another when I can get the R1T out to see if it's noticeably different. But, the roads were pretty slick. Thx
Were there 22s the Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Seasons?
I wonder if you're better off disabling regen braking for snow in all season tires?
That would be nice, but unfortunately that isn’t an option available at this point. They did publish a snow mode, which includes a lower level of regen but still can’t turn it all the way off.
20" with Falcon Wildpeak ATs. 3 Peak Snow Flake, M+S.
Nice. I've got some 22 Falkens snow tires on the way!
Are the 20 and 22 tires snow flake rated? Just curious.
Unsure about the 22s but the 20s are 3-peak snow rated tires
@@a76marine1 Just "all-season" nothing more for 21 & 22
This (the regen braking) worries me a lot due to the road conditions we get in the Fort Worth / Dallas area. Lots of ice. I love my Michelins on my 4Runner. I can’t wait to hear more about your 20’s.
Thanks. Yes, it brings up the possibility of a snow mode for a driving conditions. Something that has a little more coasting and less region to avoid the backward forces that cause the slipping.
@@RivianDad Snow mode should only be applied to vehicles with street tires (apparently). The 20” ATs handled the snow just fine.
I’m really not impressed with the 20” Pirellis but the R1Ts regen isn’t helping one damn bit. At a minimum, Rivian need to give us more Regen Braking control. Hopefully the November update will have a snow mode.
Agree. I said as much in my follow up video in the R1T: ruclips.net/video/Ky-eWcxTzPg/видео.html. Thanks for watching!
Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to included in the upcoming software update...come on Rivian!
A 17” or 18” wheel would be my choice for the R1S
Yeah, I'm sure someone will figure out how to get an 18 on these wheels. For now, the brake caliper is the limitation.
It's typically the drivers expectations of the vehicle regardless of the technology that the engineers show on paper that prove that Slippy and Grippy should never be used in a video in .25" of Denver snow. Invest 2k in seasonal tires for our climate and you can transform 100k into any fwd vehicle equally eqipped. Knowledge based Colorado native.
Just giving these tires a try. I do have snow tires on the way. Plus drove around in the R1T also and was more impressed (see follow up video). Rivian does need a snow mode though. Thx for your feedback.
@@RivianDad did you get the snow tires? Would love to see how the R1S fares on those.
throw some winter tires on there.
Rivian desperately needs a snow (type) mode to ramp down the regen. Any performance tire is obviously going to put a driver at a disadvantage in the snow but almost any regen is working against snow driving as well when it’s locking up the motors at the wheels. Needs to be addressed immediately on Rivians end
More often than not I see owners talking about feathering the throttle with regen and not applying brake almost ever
I didn't think about it before today, but I completely agree. I want at least the option of turning off the region for slippery roads. Thanks!
Completely agree. You only want to brake when absolutely necessary in snow and ice. Same concept as ABS - don't lock up the tires. I've been wondering for awhile why Rivian doesn't have a snow mode. Pretty common on other trucks and SUVs.
Change to snow tires
Please don't drive any performance tires in the snow and ice. They are not intended / rated for these conditions.
well, this is real world. Can't just change out tires before I take the kids to school or with an unexpected snow storm. Thx for the comment.
These are not performance tires. These are the same as the 21” three season all season tires.
You could drive the truck in the same weather and compare
@@GA-wq8xq Yes, I hope to, although a bit challenging to pull it off. Thx
@@GA-wq8xq right, but that's what I have. I would have actually chosen the 20s but wasn't an option for me. Actually, I'm glad now that I have the comparison. thx
