Steyr M9 A1: Best Pistol You've Never Heard Of

  • The Steyr M9 A1 is highly ignored by most gun media. Someone stupidly made the decision it isn't a real combat handgun and a group think established online along those lines. This TNP gun review will serve to combat this ignorance and hopefully boost the popularity of the M9/L9. This review will also cover the Steyr S9, C9, and L9 series of pistols; it also comes in .40 S&W. We found this Steyr to be very accurate, reliable, lightweight, highly ergonomic, and cheap to purchase. The 2nd Generation of the M9 improved the trigger, the ejector, and added a plus 2 rd baseplate for 17 rounds. The trapezoidal sights of the Steyr are good and allow for better precision than standard 3 dot sights. The grip is superb and needs no interchangeable backstraps. Highly recommended.

Great review! Steyr A1 Pistols are the best. Everyone in our shop wears one on their hip everyday from an L9 to an L40 and M40 and .357 Sig. We were so impressed with Steyr pistols that we starting manufacturing parts for them last year and have more on the R&D schedule for this year. -- Ranger Point Precision

I've been shooting an M9 since early 2001. ~3,000 rnds. The sights are very precise. Using the tip of a triangle allows for infinite precision. I had to spend a lot of time tuning the extractor, replacing with their redesigned extractor, and getting the spring tension right. It's still occasionally weak on extraction but it hasn't failed in about 500rnds. Weak/inconsistent extraction is also evident in all of the video footage here. Every few rounds appears to barely trickle out. Extraction issues aren't "group think". Nutn's one failure was the typical "extractor jumps off the case" that plagued the early guns. They've redesigned the extractor and spring setup a couple times since release, so if you're buying used this is important to understand. I love my M9. I even love the original manual safety inside the trigger guard. Great pistol, overall. Awesome to have some TNP validation!

I agree with you "Awesome" is the correct word for the Steyr pistols. I currently own the S9-A1, the C9-A1, the M9-A1, the L9-A1 and the M357-A1 models. Will never get rid of them. Tried others manufacturers but in my opinion these are the best. Love the sights, love the low felt recoil, never had any issues with them after over 200 rounds on each.

I was breaking in my 2-day old Sig P320 RX Compact at my usual indoor range 2 weekends ago. Finished up, happy, satisfied with my purchase, etc. Talked about guns for awhile with the guy behind the counter. He said, "Hey, you gotta check out the trigger on this piece... It's a Steyr M9-A1". Skeptical, I gave the trigger a quick study and was impressed. Searched RUclips on to see if Nutnfancy reviewed this gun. He did! Listened to it while driving home from the range. Went back and rented it to test out the following weekend. Fell in love. Bought M9-A1 Gen 4 for a good price, and I'm so excited to get it!

Yeah, my first CCW gun is an M9 circa 1999, with the stupid 10 round mag in California. Still have it, probably has 10k rounds through it, only needed a new extractor spring in that whole time. Probably should get new spring kit for it, but it still is 100%, so I keep putting it off. Plus I bought another M9-A1G3, and I'm going to transfer it to the original frame. First gun with a chassis system too, as Sig recently found out.

Awesome review. Steyr M-series, since the new extractors and roll pins were added in around 2012, I think, are the best in class. They last made the M357 Sig in 2014....my favorite pistol platform for 357 sig. Because of the low bore axis and swept back grip angle, it handles the 357 sig like most platforms handle 9mms. Love the looks, the grip angle, the sights, and the overall design. Getting the L9 A1 with threaded barrel from your recommended store if they have in stock. Thanks!

Thank you soooo much for reviewing this.
The M9-A1 is probably my favorite 9mm pistol of all time. I love the sights, grip, low bore axis and general feel of quality. There's even a factory threaded barrel available for suppressor use (metric threading, though :/ ). Overall, I like it more than the Glock 19 (other than the mag release).
I really hope it does get more popular, it'd be a huge shame if it got discontinued. It's not even something that weird or exotic like the Mateba semi-auto revolver.
Also, as a P.S: the M&P style triggers can go suck it. In a stress-shooting simulation (less than ideal grip/sight picture, etc), I've managed to not get the trigger to pull back and fire because the mechanism was just that little bit out of alignment somehow. This was bare-handed; with gloves, I wasn't able to replicate this. I'm guessing a bare finger can just barely get the wrong angle/position (too high) on the trigger, to where it can't properly straighten out and fully depress.

The issue is marketing and retail presence. Almost NO brick and mortar stores carry Steyr Mannlicher products. There are stores that have a storefront, but generate most of their sales online that can that carry them in inventory, but if you want to handle one in person, you are likely out of luck. And that is a shame, because it is one of the greatest unknown products out there.
Plus, they don't have the deep pockets to bribe LE agencies with inexpensive service model swaps or do sales tours of big box retailers, so they certainly aren't buying their way into larger market share. Steyr seems more interested in growing sales with a great quality product and solid reputation rather than building an empire. Plus, their customer service is fantastic.

I have about 500 rounds thru this gun. While scrolling thru my Facebook feed I also noticed that recently in the IDPA state rankings, another shooter using the Styer L9A1 came out on top. This is a love it or hate it kind of gun. I have previously inquired about weather or not you were planning a review. I think this is a gun that would impress you from a well know manufacturer. I agree. The Steyr M9 series are excellent. Unfortunately, I had the first gen with the weird trigger guard safety that would randomly engage. Also, brass ejection is funky. Even in your footage you can see some anemic ejection. Mine would actually put brass on top of my head. I got the extractor/spring upgrade from Steyr and it mildly improved. Ergonomics and trigger are the best ever in my opinion. The M9-A1 remedied the weird safety.

(my buddy has same gen m9a1 as my m40a1. you can tell by the roll pin under the rear sight that it's the latest generation M series Steyr handgun. ) but yeah obviously there's competition guns that are much more accurate probably but for an out-of-the-box handgun it definitely beats a G23 or a g19....

My buddy literally just sold his cz 75b for a gen 3 steyr m9 a1 lol he regrets it a bit. Steel frame is the most GTW i dont care what the tnp says. Buuuuuuut i still think the steyr m40 a1 is more accurate as i have alot of range time with both cz 75s and my .40. That being said. Cz97bs are also ungodly accurate for a .45 acp. Its ridiculous

      @billdawg795 7 лет назад

40 caliber sucks ass and I hate 40 but the Steyr m-40a1 comes stock with a 3 & a half pound trigger if you get the Gen 3 and you can literally stack holes with it in any other situation I would say 9mm over 40 for minimal recoil and carry capacity but it's just not an issue with the Steyr and you get a lot of stopping power I shoot a lot of Steel and you can really feel the thump of it lol

I think the Steyr M9A1 comes with like a five and a half pound trigger. My buddy noticed that my trigger was way lighter than his

I bought a M9 years ago to run in steel matches, other than the front sight actually falling of the pistol I like the gun. I did put Talon grips on, replaced the sights with trijicons and replaced the guide rod with a steel one. Note for anyone buying mags the 15 round mags are not compatible with the plus two extention, they changed the floor plate design between the 15 and 17 round mags.

I have been an M9 owner since the pre A1 era. It is my favorite polymer striker gun. Those trapezoidal sights are fast and I wish my other guns had them. I carry mine in holsters from High Noon Holsters.

I have a G42 and G26. I wanted a 4" Duty Gun and when I picked up the Steyr M9-A1, esp with the sights, I was sold with the LOW Bore Axis. On the range, it was flawless and recoil more manageable than the G26, due to the weight and axis. The curvature of the gun rear, leads you to the front sight along with the trapezoidal rear. A little heavier than the G19 and G17 but I believe my best buy.

Good vid on a good pistol... I've enjoyed shooting 2 of the different versions and the only reason I didn't look into buying one is the lack of aftermarket support for the pistols (thanks to that internet BS about them not being good pistols and the resulting low sales no doubt). Not because the pistols "needed modifying" (not like the M&P pistols that are, IMO broken-by-design and surviving only off of internet hype and brand loyalty) but because I LIKE to tinker with my firearms and I like the ability to fiddle and modify them to exactly what I prefer. Sadly the Steyr simply didn't have the aftermarket to allow me to do that and at the time I wasn't capable of building my own holsters etc.
Speaking of "setting the record straight", you REALLY should give the CZ P-07v2 in 9mm a go instead of confusingly dissing it while referencing the .40cal Duty version like you do in the P-09 review and this one. That's truly one of THE best polymer pistols around for all the same reasons you loved the P-09 and it puts over-hyped stuff like the SIG P320 or the utterly "MEH" M&P "2.0" to shame and coasts less in doing so.

Every time I see the footage where you draw and take two shots and reholster it makes me think of the stories of cops that trained like that. When they got into real gunfights they would draw, fire two shots and reholster, even though there were more than one attacker or the one they shot at didn't get hit or critically wounded. Just thought I'd throw that out there as an observation.

Retired LEO, Carried the original Steyr M9. then the M40A1. Over 5k rounds in practice and training with only one early malfunction. My M40A1 is a first generation version. It is now my primary CCW handgun. I shoot the Steyr pistols better than almost anything else. Super accurate (for me). Might just need to pick up the M9A1

As an aside, one thing that is not mentioned in all the various reviews is the construction of the firearm. The entire fire control group is in a removable frame inside the polymer grip. This allows an armorer to remove the assembly and replace it without a serial number change. get the weapon back in service and rebuild the fire controls at his leisure.

I was able to get the TP9SFX on the MD approved handgun list after watching your review of the gun. So glad I did as it is a TOTAL winner. I’ll be petitioning The Peoples Republic of MD to do the same for the Steyr. Looks like a great gun for the money.

Bought essentially a gen 3 M9 6 years ago, replaced the extractor (Steyr sent a better one for free!) and sold it to my daughter. My oldest daughter has a gen 4 M9 and while it has some better features such as an elongated magazine release, it shoots the same as the earlier model: extremely accurate! Nice trigger feel out of the box and so easy to control. High bore axis with this ergonomic grip. All three of us think it is easier to control than a comparable Glock, Walther PPQ, or H&K VP9, although we all like the Springfield XD Mod 2 in this regard also. We bought these guns essentially at dealer cost from Cabela's years ago because the store wanted to clear inventory as no one was buying! This is a competitive firearm at a good price.

Looked at one, really like the looks, held it and can't wait to shoot it. So, I went to shop and put it on layaway. It was my birhday.

Nutnfancy - Not going to lie, after watching this I'm definitely going to pull the trigger on buying one of the long slide versions. Have held one at gander a couple years ago, loved he feel and the sights, only downfall was lack of popularity and hence forth reviews. Only saw poor performances on Hickok among others and was not impressed until now. Not to blow your head up, but I heavily weigh what you have to say about gun purchases in light of the testing they go thru in your hands. Keep up the good work and thank you for providing this priceless service for free.

Several years ago an old Army buddy and I where at a gun show when he asked me what I thought of Steyr. I told him they were an excellent firearm company. He asked me about their pistols and I’ll be honest, I had no idea they made one. Turns out they make an excellent pistol. I really liked the sites.

I believe the Steyr M9 IS a great gun. 3 years ago when I was in the market for one they were so hard to find and when I did overpriced at $799 when I was stationed in Washington state. So I bought instead another great gun more reasonably priced,a Springfield XD Mod 2. I know they've come down in price, but they need to advertise like FN did with the 509. Seriously, I hadn't seen a commercial on regular TV for a firearm since early 90s. When Steyr gets out there with commercials like FN did on ESPN, they will sell better. Also, Happy Memorial Day, Nutn and everyone else that served or is currently serving! Thanks to you and Jardine for the great video.

I’ve owned about everything that you’d typically see in this class ( price, size etc.). It has ergonomics similar to an HK VP9, reliable like a Glock 19 , trigger like a Sig P320 and accurate like a Sphinx Compact. You can pick one up for under $500.00. I own the C9a1 and wouldn’t change anything. A lot of my friends shoot it better than their personal firearms . I’ve run 1,000 rounds through mine and it keeps getting better.
