    OK, not so secret - and in my rush to get this out, 1) I shot in UHD in order to reduce workload on my travel laptop AND reduce my dependence on internet speeds (as is, it took a full DAY to upload from a vacation rental); 2) I didn't grade the footage I managed to clip on this pre-production camera; 3) I didn't do my usual audio clean-up afterward; and 4) I missed an errant title I should have deleted around the 22 second mark. My bad.
    Still, this is a FASCINATING camera, and it's always a joy to spend time with Sean. MORE TO COME, including shooting in 6K, of course!

    Really an excellent interview, Hugh! You and Sean always make for a great interview. I am very impressed with how _clearly_ Panasonic is thinking about the specific requirements of _professionals._ And Sean's insights about this during your interview make it very clear that Panasonic R&D understands these requirements very clearly and is creating targeted design embodiments and market offerings for fulfilling these professional requirements. With the S1, S1R for professional stills photographers and the S1H nicely differentiated and featured for video professionals, Panasonic has clearly done their homework with these cameras, and it really shows. These cameras were built for full-on professional applications, not the enthusiast or prosumer markets. Very, very impressive. (PS: I keeping thinking how much Sean reminds me of a younger Justin Stailey.) Cheers, Stephen

    I love the candid tone and gentle humour of this interview, Hugh. Panasonic had the best introduction of all the FF mirrorless cameras, I feel, with the S1 line feeling great in the hand, having ridiculous features like full frame 10 bit internal teased and now the best video hybrid on the market by some distance. If only I could afford this, an M-L adapter and the M0.8 lenses then I'd be a happy man for years and years.

    These cameras are awsome! They destroy the competition in most ways imo. The only thing holding them back is, except of the limited lens choice compared to some others, the autofocus. I really hope that will be Panasonics main focus from now on. That seems to be the only complaint comming back all the time. @ijshockeyfreak 5 лет назад

      @@ricardoduarte6589I agree. But seen the low price point compared to other pro cinema gear this camera will not only be bought by pro cinematographers. Pro's can use manual focus, and will probably even often disable ibis, but most clients within this price range will probably like or for some even need to have a better AF. It won't hold ME back to invest in this system but in order to grow I think they'd better invest in that part.

Seems like it's the best of both of these with quality that is almost as good an image as the BMPCC4k plus all the auto functions of the GH5 and more. I just find the BMPCC4k too much work when I am on the move. The S1 video quality, when properly graded in Resolve, has a beautiful glassy sheen that I love.

    Another great video Hugh. No wonder Panasonic is laughing - by not crippling their cameras, they're giving camera geeks what they want. For 2 and 1/2 years, the GH5 has been the best all rounder, and now comes the full frame variant, plus upgrades. That new tilty-flippy screen now the de-facto best on earth. Given the disappointing (IMO) release announcements from Sony and Canon this week (a6600 and 90D respectively), Panasonic should suck up a lot of wedding guys, and those looking for a B-cam to the Vari-cam/EVA-1. Personally, I don't have much interest in full frame, but for those who do, this looks to be the best FF camera going. My only fear is that Panny forgets us 4/3s users....
    Thanks for the hard work Hugh.

    When the S1H was originally announced, I was a little critical ... partly because they made no mention of IBIS and the web talk seamed to infer it didn't have it.
    Now we know that IBIS is present, that it has that ingenious flip screen implementation and retains everything else the GH5 can do with bells on....it has made me want one!
    The only problem is I don't think I can go back to the size and weight of full frame... I've been spoiled by the strength of the G series.
    Please Panasonic, throw in a couple of extra stops of clean ISO performance into a GH6 with the linear focus feature from the S series and take my money.
    I'll even forgive you if you stick with DFD autofocus because the GH5, GH5S and G9 have served me so well that I think you deserve a little slack. :)

      Fair point. There was nothing to indicate AF has evolved beyond the extant S1 and S1R (I have the S1R in- house now), and time was short. But Panasonic is KEENLY aware that AF performance and lens availability are critical issues.

    It's a huge investment to switch to a lens mount which almost no one out here uses, but they need to really do better than contrast AF to make the switch worth it.
    *IF* I do invest in one of these L-mount cameras, I will most likely just buy an EF adaptor and use manual focus with my Canon L-series glass. If the AF was decent, there would be a bigger difference between manual focus and buying native L-mount glass. • @smrphotographyllc
      @smrphotographyllc 5 лет назад

      If you're referencing the S1 (which I assume you are). It's simple. From day 1, the S1 was NEVER advertised as a GH5 replacement. It is a balanced tool for hybrid content creation. High IQ in video balanced for Stills capture as well.
      The S1H is the camera you would look to for the true CINEMA feature set. It's part of the reason the S1H has the redesigned chassis that it does.
      I understand some of the frustration with what has come from the filmmaker update, but at the same time, we've never been a company (that I can recall) to list a set of features coming that hasn't delivered what we promised.

    • @mariushaugan
      @mariushaugan 5 лет назад

      @@smrphotographyllc Thanks for replying. I have ordered the S1H, and that looks like a great run and gun. It's a shame that the S1 won't get shutter angle update, it would be a great extra body for the S1H. I will probably stick with the GH5 and GH5S for backup for the S1H.
      But I am sure I will keep using the GH series for a bit for smaller lighter run and gun situations.
      And will probably get the GH6 when that get's announced as well. Or will it be the GH5 MK II...

      @@SonnyCrackBeats Well, turning it off doesn't mean it's hard-bolted or locked down to the frame. I guarantee you I've have such mega jello footage even with it turned off. The wind, waves and motor vibrations always find a way to knock the sensor/stabilizer out of the off position.
      Also when I go handheld I want it to look handheld. I use monopods and tripods nearly exclusively. I simply don't need it, but turning it off in those situations is viable, but not on a boat at speed over the waves.

      Yes... and no (just my opinion). Phase detect is not going to solve magically the AF. If you see the current status, the S line (and G9) are in line with Z and R AF. The guys at Sony just have some magic algorithms that give them the edge.
      The point is- for truly accurate AF at these large apertures, the final adjustment is always contrast based (except R mount I gather) so Pana would need not JUST to add PD but also master the hybrid AF by itself.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  5 лет назад

      Major Motion Pictures You raise a valid point I’ve in fact made many times before: the contrast only/DFD AF - particularly in video - is not in the same league as Sony (or Canon, for that matter, and now nor Fujifilm too). Its stills performance is generally competitive, though again not as good. The AF is unchanged from the S1 or S1R (which I am testing now, stay tuned). As I’ve pointed out in the comments section of this video, however, AF performance and lens selection for the S1H are not nearly the issues they are for its siblings. This is because cine DPs have all the glass they need via adapter, and that glass will most likely be manually focused.
      As for the idea that I’d accept a constraint imposed by a manufacturer to not discuss something as fundamental as AF? That’s just silly.
