    Welcome space travelers
Space mountain is a thrilling, high-speed, turbulent rollercoaster-type ride in the dark that includes sharp turns, sudden drops, and stops.
Before you embark on your adventure, please place all hats, glasses, and loose possessions in the storage pouch located directly in front of you.
To prepare for launch, pull the lap bar toward you.
You are now ready for your intergalactic adventure, thank you and have a great flight.
    :)))))

At both Disney and Universal it seems it's never a roller coaster, always a roller-coaster-type ride. The phrase reminds me of "pasteurized cheese product", as if there were some legal reason they couldn't call it a roller coaster. Even though it clearly is.

I'm old enough that I remember when they were advertising Space Mountain at Disneyland in 1977. You can see the original commercial on RUclips. When I watch it I still get goosebumps like I did then. I thought it looked like the coolest ride I'd ever seen because I loved science fiction and Star Wars so much at that time. I finally got to go to Disneyland with my friends and we braved the incredibly long and boring wait in line, well over an hour, to have the privilege to get to ride it. At least there was a lot of really neat spacey looking things about and that huge spaceship hanging over the loading area to marvel at. But right as we came up to close to the front of the line there was a delay and an announcement of something like technical difficulties. Then the ridecar/spaceship finally came into the loading area and one of the women on it was crying like she was very frightened. This made me suddenly scared to go on it. What if the same thing happened while I was on it? But all my long anticipation of riding it won out over my fear and I did ride it. It scared my friends a lot, but I wasn't scared a bit which surprised me. I was just amazed at how it felt to be zooming around in what felt like space. I couldn't wait to go back on it. It is an amazing ride and I will always have those fond memories of being a child at Disneyland. I'm glad that I did those things then because now that I am older, I don't tolerate thrill rides like I did then. I have no desire to go on them. I am definitely more People Mover speed now. LOL

  • @andrewtaylor940

Am I the only one that remembers the original ride vehicles in WDW Space Mountain? They were these front to back father/child nut crusher seats. But the coolest thing was these neon green panels on the sides. I’m not sure if they were lit or they glowed from black lighting in the ride. But it meant you could look up in places in the (long oh so long) ride queue and see these green shooting stars way overhead. As you got further in the displays eventually showed you the vehicles and it clicked that those rushing lights overhead were the coaster. It was a very cool effect. I also remember the interior projections being much brighter back in the 70’s. I rode it again recently and it was much darker than it used to be.

    • @MattMcIrvin
      @MattMcIrvin 5 лет назад +2

I think the purposefully got rid of the glow strips, and removed the ability to see the coaster from the queue, because they wanted the darkness to be total enough that you couldn't see the tracks at all.

I rode on it in '86 as an 8 year old with my father. They still had those cars then and, if I remember right, only had lap belts to hold you in with the hand rails to your sides. My father rode on it when it was new and said that back then it was pitch black inside while you rode it. Said it had more light in '86 to where you could see most of the tracks. It was even less dark in '98 when I rode it again and the cars were the newer 1 person in each seat style. WDW. I rode the one in DL in the mid 90's and didn't like it as much as the WDW one but still enjoyed it.

I remember seeing all the concept art of the future Space Mountain at Disneyland along with concept art for the "New Tomorrowland." These images were in the Disneyland souvenir booklets before the 1967 redesign of Tomorrowland. I was so excited to see the new Tomorrowland and Space Mountain. I loved all the new attractions like Journey thru Inner Space, but I was terribly disappointed that there was no Space Mountain. In the 70s I remember seeing that Space Mountain was at Walt Disney World first, and that really angered me. I'd been seeing all this artwork for so many years and Orlando got it first? Grrrr. My first ride on Space Mountain, Disneyland was truly exciting. I've read articles about rehabs and redesigns, but those things occurred after I left Southern California in 1984, and I haven't experienced it. In 1991 my job led me to Orlando, and the old Tomorrowland down here. I liked the queue area, and because of the double track, the attraction is larger. There is also the exit show, which is fun too. The last time I rode on Space Mountain here in Orlando, the attraction was so dark that I couldn't see the track, therefore I couldn't lean into the curves. I was jerked from side to side, and decided that I really didn't need that experience.

Actually, I was working at Disneyland as a busboy when Magic Kingdom, WDW opened. That was the day we became the red-headed stepchildren. I was making $2.06 an hour, and a roundtrip ticket from LAX to Orlando was $200! It may as well have been on the far side of the moon. It was a dream for so many years. In 1984 I was working for AT&T and had an opportunity to move to Kansas City, MO for a better job and higher standard of living. Then in 1991 AT&T was reorganizing, and for job security we were offered a move to either Atlanta or Orlando. That was a no brainer, and the first thing I did upon arrival was buy an annual pass.

Great idea! Combine the original Tiki restaurant idea with Space Mountain. Guests would be served a dinner of spaghetti, chocolate pudding and a milkshake at the loading dock, and they would eat during the ride! Sure it would be a little messy, but that's part of the fun.

As a little kid, I was lucky enough to ride on the soft opening of Space Mountain in Magic Kingdom, Florida. Frankly, it scared the poop out of little 10 year old me. But I enjoyed it. Even today, I can't think of Space Mountain without the term "spires of Space Mountain" popping into my head. Every Monorail, people mover, train, or really anything in Magic Kingdom always used that reference.
"And as we round the corner we see the spires of Space Mountain in the distance"
"As we approach the ticketing and transportation center you can look across the Seven Seas Lagoon to see the spires of Space Mountain"
It was the first big roller coaster I'd ever ridden and it was pretty overwhelming.

I have an unpopular opinion in that I prefer the space mountain at Walt Disney World. While it will never beat Disneyland’s in soundtrack, I love how it isn’t almost all riding through space. There is that tunnel right in the middle of the space part that is a change of pace for a few seconds, right before getting back into the action. I also love that there are actual things to see in space, like the astronauts, and planets and even a UFO at one point. I also prefer the one person per row cars, even though it kind of hurts, because it really makes you feel like you are in a spaceship.

She sat on a bench outside and said she had a really nice time talking to the parents of the other kids who were doing the same thing.
It was a blast; there were four or five of us, and the crowds were so limited that we were RUNNING through the hallways to get to the main queue maze, and the cast members running the ride got to where they recognized me as a single rider and started LOOKING for me in line to pluck me out and fill empty seats.
I got to ride it _25 times_ that night.
Unfortunately now that I'm in my 30s and have had surgery on my back for herniated discs, I'll never be able to ride Space Mountain again. _But I got to ride it 25 times in a row when I was 16._

Space Mountain the roller coaster type ride in the dark is by far one of the most thrilling and immersive coasters in all of Disneyland and it’s totally my favorite ride at Disneyland and I agree with OFFHAND DISNEY that it’s fun no matter if it’s your first time riding it to your hundredth time riding it, it never gets old thanks for the interesting history of Space Mountain OFFHAND DISNEY really loved this video!!! 😉🚂

I went on Disney World Space Mountain during Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween and they shut off all the lights and everything for the Halloween party. It was my worst Space Mountain experience ever. The lights and music truly make it what it is.

Many years ago, about 20 to be specific, I was at Magic Mountain riding my favorite coaster there, Viper, when I got this idea that I wanted to ride my two favorite coasters in one day, so after riding Viper, I went to Disneyland to ride Space Mountain. Those were the carefree days! Of those two coasters, SM is by far the best. Disney really did it right. Not surprising that SM mission 2 in Paris saved that park from financial doom.

Disney world space mountain is the only original one I’ve been on. I was high key disappointed by the Hyperspace mountain in Disneyland. Recently just went to Paris and that version of Hyperspace is much better. However, the one in WDW was my first roller coaster and will always hold a special place

I just found your channel bc I live under a rock and I'm so happy you regularly upload such great content. This video is so perfect with the music and everything...Space Mountain is my all time favorite ride because when I've only went to Disney twice and the first time I was only 5 years old. Going on this ride, no, the line and ceiling itself, absolutely blew my mind. My grandma was with us and I will always remember her asking if we were going all the way up there and I believed we were truly that far up in space lol. I miss being a kid..Disney is so nostalgic and innocent (when you don't think of some things..) and I look forward to your videos to keep the nostalgia alive in me. •.•

I'm so old, I rode Disneyland's Space Mountain *before* it had a soundtrack. If you got there right when the park opened, and the first ride ("correction: attraction" - WED) you did was Space Mountain, the floor-to-ceiling windows to the left showed the room with the track with the lights on. If the lights were off and the ride was in operation, you saw green fluorescent lights zooming by; these were the cars you would be riding on.
The ride goes only 28 mph. But it's always felt like you were going much faster. The turns and dips are very tight, so it's not tame. And you never could see where you are going. It feels like it's a lot longer than it really is.
I've never been to Florida's Magic Kingdom, so I can't compare. But Disneyland's Space Mountain is a great ride.

This was my first roller coaster at age 3. Back then the seats were different. Here I am 45 now and still ride it when I'm in the park, such as summer of 2018. For those of you saying it's too rough, try an old fashioned wooden roller coaster, far worse on those. Yes, it's a bit jerky, but if you know the track then not so bad. Still my favorite and still my kids favorite.

I've only ridden Orlando's Space Mountain, and I'd say it's only my third favorite Disney roller coaster, but I like it a lot.
It's not *that* painful. It could definitely use some of that onboard audio goodness--there's music in the enclosure but it's kind of faint. But I love everything around it--the star tunnel in the queue, the weird long "energizing tunnel", the lift hill with the huge spaceship, the strange show scenes in the tunnel back to Tomorrowland (which apparently just had its moving walkway removed, but the dioramas are still there).

Long ago I was in the candle procession and after the show, we were escorted behind Tomorrowland. It was kind of dark but you could clearly see the back side of what would become Space Mountain and a dark pit. The whole back side was open to everyone walking by. Fast forward to my Senior grad night at DL and I finally went on Space Mountain and promptly got motion sickness. I spent the next hour seated on a planter in the middle nursing my nausea. Finally feeling a bit better I decided to try a smooth ride like "Adv through Inner Space!" Everything was fine until I hit the hallway with all the spinning atoms and I quickly closed my eyes until I knew I was clear. Don't remember going on any other rides that night

You summed it up best. Space Mountain never gets old. Unfortunately I’ve never experienced the Disneyland version, just Walt Disney World’s so by default it’s my favorite. My hope for it is that once TRON opens, they’ll do a heavy referb on the tracks inside. Even so, it’s always a fantastic Disney experience.

I’ve always loved space mountain because of mainly 3 reasons
    1. Being themed by sci-fi and space themes. I’ve always loved sci-fi and space and the ride does a good job of making it feel like you really are blasting off into the stars
    2. Soundtrack. How the hell can you not enjoy the soundtrack for space mountain? It’s just.. good! Ya know?
    3. It’s one of the rides at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom that is an ACTUAL thrill ride. You can tell me all you want about how the seven dwarves mine train is a good thrill or how the death trap that is Thunder Mountain is fun, but when you’re in a ride that is dark and visually pleasing while inside the landmark of tommorowland, it’s gonna be hard to top off

Space Mountain in Anaheim had the same problem when I rode it last time.
I always loved the ride growing up but as an adult?
      Not so much.
Was not helped by the fact the last time I rode it was easily over 100° that day, and inside Space Mountain either the A/C was not working or it was on but not keeping up with the hideous heat and humidity.
I was about close to hurling before it ended.
Lets just say I was so nauseous and had zero fun last time that when the pictures they take just at the top of a big drop I was NOT a happy camper.
My face LOOKED like I was about to hurl. Pale white sweaty and just a frown down to my toes.
We sat in the front. Maybe that was the problem.
After that ride I sat in that rest area near Space Mountain for several hours afterwards.
No desire to do anything my stomach was so nauseous.
No desire to ride any more roller coasters after that or any other rides.
I think eventually I was brave enough for the People Mover but that was it for me otherwise.
I saw the inside of Space Mountain while the were doing some maintenance.
All the lights were on and it sure looked different in the light.
Oddly it seemed smaller than expected.

The Hong Kong Disneyland version of Space Mountain is particularly good. The effects are great and it seems like they've learned a bunch from the previous versions that they've been running since the '70s and it shows. It's just a well designed and polished version of the ones I road in FL and CA decades earlier.

My first time EVER on Space Mountain was in 2016 at Disneyland. I was 21 (24 now) and I was TERRIFIED at first. I didn't know what to expect since watching a POV on RUclips is a whole different experience from actually riding it in the flesh. I ended up enjoying every bit until the end and I was shaking! I haven't been to the MK one yet so my answer is Disneyland's SP all the way!

Nice save because I still wonder why I sat through all of Tomorrowland. Oh right free ticket from my dentist. As to Space Mountain. I never been on it. My sister has at least. I think my little brother wasn't able to or something. But since I love rollercoasters, even if I can't ride them, a space coaster is right up my alley. And I think it more appropriate actually that it ended up opening first in Florida because as the old documentary says, there were rockets in our back yard.

did you know that before Disneyland, the Matterhorn and Space mountain, all roller coasters were built with narrow gauge railroad tracks and were supported on wooden supports.
Despite most newer roller coasters being out of metal supports and metal tracks, vintage tracks still exist today. the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz still has a roller coaster that is built out of a narrow gauge railroad track and wooden supports known as the Giant Dipper.
