I’ve been running for time for about a year and secretly kind of like when I fall short of a goal because it reinvigorates my training and motivation. I’m dedicated to running for the rest of my life so I have plenty of time to get there 💁‍♀️

Slow runner here. I have run 5k in under 30 minutes but only twice and the last time was 5 years ago. I decided to train for it earlier this year: 30:10... So close! But it doesn't matter Emily! Just have fun trying. And if it doesn't happen this time, maybe next time. But you may still surprise yourself 😊

Ahhh you are so close again 🫶🏻 so true, I know it’s not the end of the world it can just be frustrating when you train for something and you have a couple of ‘bad’ weeks ☺️

I will enjoy your content, whether or not you meet your goal Emily. It’s nice to see your authentic experience, and honestly it is super relatable.
I set myself a goal of getting 10,000 steps every day in June with a combination of running and walking, and have ended up with shin splints. Even though it’s the last day of June today, I have had to ditch my goal to prevent further injury. I could push it, but for what gain?

it's really fun to see your training and your sessions etc., as they are so relatable to my own! i've been trying to get my first 5k under 30, and last week on race day i came in at 30:42.. even though i was kinda disappointed right after, i quickly changed my mindset to be happy with a new PB and learn from the race and the training! i feel pretty confident that i'll be able to do it early fall if i train consistenly during the summer, which i am cause i'm more motivated than i've been in a long time. all this to say, i think you'll smash it with your 5k attempt, and if not, it's not the end of the world!

im not a good runner, not close to a great runner 😅 either, but the way i motivate myself is to take in 1 step at a time. i started running when i turned 41 and right now as i turn 43, i binge watch different peoples journey into running to get inspired. i hope 1 day i find joy in running 😊 and it doesn’t become just another workout i need to cross in my workout ❤ thank you for being 1 of the videos i saw in youtube to inspire me ❤

I only just did this - per km 5.57. Soooooo tough for me. I’m now running about 6.40 and can’t imagine running at 5.57 again. Not sure if the weather has an impact. But you always run faster in a park run, so maybe you should try and get your PB on a park run. I think you’ll do it. You just naturally speed up.

You are very capable of the 5k PB... I had a 5k time trial on my plan today and also wanted a sub 30, and got 28:15!! I never thought I was capable ! Are you planning on doing it on your own or as part of a race event? You could do a parkrun :) that was the plan for me but I had to work yesterday so did it today it was raining so not many ppl out on the paths :) I am still buzzing now 3 hrs later lol

Great Video, subscribed! Just remember that a bad day can be related to a lot of things: bad nights sleep, not hydrated, didn’t eat well that week, the heat, emotions, and more. It usually does not reflect your effort or training. I’m also trying to do a sub 30 min 5K and keep getting hurt. I’ve hit 30:04 but can’t seem to run consistently the past few months thanks to my IT band, hip flexors and so now am trying to focus on strength training. Also, remember to celebrate the tiny victories, not just the end goal.

Will have to wait 2 weeks though be ause I'm aiming to complete my first marathon next Sunday. Hoping for sub 6 hours but will just be happy with a finish. I dont mind if I come last either.

Training to improve time is tough. I struggle making the easy runs easy enough… if you’re training for speed running slow feels counterproductive (it isn’t). Fast runs should be hard, I often push no near throwing up. Fun times!

Arbitrary time/score goals in sports can completely suck the fun out of it, whether you're talking running, golf, whatever. When frustration hits, just remember you're doing things that are making you better than you were. I bet you're faster than you were 7 weeks ago. If you miss the time trial, I bet you hit it after your next training block. And a year from now you won't even care whether you hit the 30 minute goal in July vs. October because the whole thing will be in the rear view mirror.

Regarding the gym if you can find ways to make it fun (get a partner, do exercises you enjoy) it won’t suck as much till you form the habit of going.
I think most people hate going for the first month and a lot of people feel uncomfortable just being there. I would focus on just being in the gym and training your mind that it’s okay to be there.

Improvement in running can be very erratic.
I have friends who started Parkrunning and struggled to complete the course in 40 minutes. 6 months later and they are comfortably running sub-35. A couple of other friends recently tried and tried to go sub 30, then over the course of 4 weeks are now running low 28. For myself, I have gone low 24 a couple of times this year, but mostly end up between 25 and 26.
And then sometimes you're in a great place and get sick or injured and next thing you know you're 5 minutes than you were a year ago!
I'd love to run sub 20. Is this even possible? Who knows. I think it's more valuable to find a speed where you can run 5k (or 10k or 20k) comfortably and spend most of your time enjoying that experience, and every so often you'll find yourself going faster without even really trying. Most of my fastest Parkruns were when I set out to run fast, but when I just ran comfortably and then discovered that I'd reached the half way mark super-fast and decided to push it on the way back.
Not to say that the combo of long run / tempo run / interval run / strength work won't help. It certainly will! But if you're having trouble completing the interval run you'll get a lot more value slowing it down enough that you can complete it reliably and building up from there.

Tip on using the elliptical. Don't touch the straws if you're training for running. Work only your legs with a very slight forward lean while holding the central console handles.
I do all my easy, long and tempo runs with the machine(at home) and it works like magic without breaking my legs. Can focus on intervals and other faster runs and never have to skip them because of some running related niggle. At least not yet *knocks on wood*.
