    I live in Japan and about 5 months ago, an old lady ( 60 - 70 ish years old) knocked on my door saying she was facing a hard time during corona and was selling produce she grew at her backyard to pay the bills. She was charging ¥500 ( a little less than 5 dollars ) for a cabbage, which is very expensive for a cabbage. My husband wanted to help so he bought the cabbage and when she handed him, it was the smallest cabbage I've ever seen. A while later I've talked to a neighbor about it and she said that the old lady did that even before the pandemic and she lived in a fancy house driving a new fancy car, she didn't need money at all as she was supported by her children. I was shocked!

      That's not a scam but just some old, rich misers preying on good people's sympathy. I live in Bangkok, Thailand, where we can find a similar case of beggars who are actually rich, old folks with a lot of free time. So they decide to use their time wisely while the rest of their extended family members are at work or school, by leaving their houses everyday, putting on their shabbiest clothes and earning some easy money on the street. A lot of times people got confused seeing these poor ragged looking grandpas/grandmas getting in expensive cars and driving away 🤣

    Having heard your last scam towards foreigners, I believe my daughter and I were targets of one last year on our trip to Shikoku. We were recomend by our lodging host to eat at his friends restaurant. We went in and were sat down up by the kitchen. We were never given a menu to order from. Then food was served, that we didn't order. We didn't know what to do, and thought perhaps our lodging host ordered something for us. Then we got the bill! It was $60 (Usd)for the 2 of us! A piece of fish and some vegetables. That was 2 days of our budget, gone! We told our host what happened. He acted like he didn't understand. Be careful out there!

    • @blablup1214
      @blablup1214 3 года назад +16

      This sounds like a scam. But it is normal to get something you didn't order. Many bars have kind of an "entrace fee" forget the name oft it. Were you get some tiny portion for around 400-500 Yen.

    • @gloriouscock2793

      @@gloriouscock2793 I guess 60 $ was the meals budget for 2 days, not the complete budget for 2 days. Yoshinoya, serves tasty things for around 5 $. You can get enough food for one meal in a convenience store for 5 $. So I Guess you can calculate with 3 meals a 5 $ per person per day. You will miss out on some experiences because in my opinion the food is an important part of Japan. But Japan is expensive, if you don't have the money you have to cut down on something.

      It's always best to find your own places to eat and drink. Don't take recommendations unless it's from someone you know personally. A lot of touts on the streets are scammers. Like those bars that say "All you can drink for 30 minutes for 3,000 yen". Those are scams.

    This happened a couple times while I was in Japan. I’m not sure if it’s a scam or upselling to foreigners. When going to sit-down restaurants, the waiters would give us a menu, but when you choose an item, the waiter would say that’s not available and offer another item at a different (higher) price. It’s happened a couple times so I’m fairly suspicious.

    In the states we have an IRS tax scam. This typically happens around tax time, and you will get this call, with the person (or automated voice) claiming that there is an issue with your tax payment with the IRS, and that you have to call them at this particular number to resolve the issue. This is a major scam, as the IRS DOES NOT call people. They send out letters in the mail.

    • @steemlenn8797
      @steemlenn8797 3 года назад

      And anyway, if you get surprise mail/phone, look up the number. Any tax authority etc. will have a number on their website, and it's only the last few digits that change. If the number is wrong, you can drop them an E-Mail with the details.
      Either is was - surprise - a genuine call or they will give it to the police.

We wanted to just eat something first. He took us and showed us where his place was and gave us a flier saying he will look out for us when we get there. We ate and it got late, and didn't feel like going anymore. I felt so bad that I wanted to go back the next day and make up for it, but never got around to it... Elderly people are still people… And some people are shit people. Not everyone were blessed with loving relatives. Not many flips the question and ask why their parents/elderly don’t initiate contact on their own behalf. Relationships go both ways with both parts needed. Of course we should protect our elderly people especially those that are vunerable, but it’s very easy to forget to also treat them as humans that has lived their entire life capable of making their own decision up until the point they became vunerable, and unfortunately many made bad decisions without trying to redeem them and not even considering flipping that question but continue to victimize themselves so they don’t have to take any responsibility.

      @@daveUK1066 Disrespect? It's just apathy. I'm in the group of people Moi described. I have lots of elderly friends, and I recently realized that so many elderly likes me *because* I love listening to them and to their stories. My own parents and siblings, however, our interaction is toxic because of our parents.
      That said, most Japanese people tend to have this concept of generational barrier when making friends? I generally make friends with people of all ages and one day one of my older Japanese friends told me that this is actually strange as, according to her, most people make friends with people their own age as they would have more things in common with each other. I later noticed that it also exist outside Japan and I wonder if that's a contributing factor to the disconnect.
      I never thought of it as protecting the elderly, but before COVID I ran annual practical workshops for the local community (especially the elderly) on how to protect their privacy and security online mainly because it's an area of interest and a local librarian gave me the idea to run the workshop at the library. There are many things we can do to help and the help don't have to come from relatives. Such as making them aware of such scams so if they get that call from 'relatives' in the future, we can teach them to ask the caller for proof that they are who they say they are.

      @@julesverneinoz Hmmm, it's more that in Japanese culture it's hard to be friends with someone much older because you are supposed to have respect bordering on worship for them. It's probably going away a bit, as younger generations barely have time to have friends their own age any more, and are increasingly realising that the older generations don't deserve their respect (even if they might not say it out loud... that would be rude, after all)

    04. I’ve got a story. A Japanese friend of mine fell for this one, 2 years ago. EXACTLY as you said, Paolo. Foreign military guy (claimed to be American, stationed in Afghanistan). She wasn’t actually interested in love, she claimed, although that’s the angle he initially tried. She just made a human connection with him… so when he told her he would be killed if he didn’t come up with money to bribe his way out of the country, she wired it to him. I don’t remember exactly, but I think the total was close to 100,000 US$. BUT…
    Ironically, our mutual friend that attempted to come to her rescue and helped her deal with the emotional aftermath of it all ended up falling in love with her… and they are in fact married now. So it lead to love after all.

    In other areas, in NYC there are many dressed up as the Statue of Liberty, Spiderman, etc. They are very friendly and offer to pose for a picture. In Korea, near some tourist attractions, I've been accosted by people offering to be your guide. In both, the "scam" was fairly obvious and avoided both. Not so much a scam, but in Europe on 2 occasions, someone tried to open my pack when it was on my back. Again, obvious but one tends to get a bit lax living in Japan. Edit: I know, it's not a guitar maker. But at least it's as close as one can get for traditional Japanese crafts and musical instrument makers. 😉

    Interesting video! I think it would also be interesting to know how the scammers are being treated by the authorities if they get caught. Are there strict punishments about this kind of scams, or they are considered a minor issue?

    Here in Brazil, "Ore ore scams" are made from prison. They call saying that kidnaped a relative of you and ask for money... since you are in the phone is hard to call the person to know the true. Old people are targets in this case.

    I Know a guy who got hit with the "loan" scam... they will send credentials and have you sign a contract... on the contract the scammer poses as a CPA (Certified Financial Advisor) ... they have a office.... when you call you will be put on hold and sometimes the CPA is busy in a meeting! I can't make this up

    The first scam is somewhat same with the text scam here in the 🇵🇭 wherein people would suddenly text you and pretended that someone from your family who changed their number, usually a new roaming number and stuff.

    After watching this video, I felt an overwhelming need to help these scam victims. Once I get the money promised by my royal Nigerian acquaintance, I will earn good karma by sharing my earnings with them.
