  • Shoji Morimoto provides a very unusual rental service to his clients in Tokyo, hiring himself out in order to, quite literally, do nothing.
    He has fashioned a career out of renting himself out to clients who simply don't want to be alone. Shoji doesn't engage in conversation or do anything other than just be there at whatever event or activity he has been hired to attend, and yet he is in high demand, scheduling one to three sessions a day.

      Hi @BBC Reel, I think there is some issues with the audio mixing in this video.
      If you play the audio for this video in mono, many of the speaking voices from the interview with the guy would just be gone and completely cannot be heard. From my understanding, this can happen when the left and right audio signals destructively cancel each other when mixed into monosound, and which produces distorted/muffled sound.
      I have some hearing issues with one of my ear, so I play videos with accessibility settings enabled to mix stereo/surround sound into monosound.
      I hope your audio engineer can figure out a setup that would avoid these kinds of issues in future videos 😀

When he is “doing nothing” with the people, he doesn’t make anything awkward or weird, and he doesn’t make people feel uncomfortable. Sometimes someone who makes others feel uncomfortable may seem like a creep or a wierdo. Hence, giving off “creepy vibes”

    He is actually doing a lot for the women in the video. He is an on demand traveling companion. He is professional (punctual and respectful, and does not make sexual or relationship demands on these women). He is also a good listener. For the women there are no obligations like with a friend. He gives support when and where the women want and then the women can move on with their lives.

      @@pamfan221 ; you are correct sometimes and I am correct sometimes. So, we are both right. What is good listening depends on the situation. Active listening can be best in certain situations as you mentioned. As a licensed therapist / social worker for many years, passive listening can sometimes be the best approach. Besides the video giving examples, I could give personal experiences.
      As explained by one of my professors, just being there for someone has been described by some of her clients as the best therapy they received.

    He's really close to a therapist in reality, to be truly heard is something a lot of people are missing in the current world, and he provides it. By being there to do "nothing" he is actually listening and helping out his clients. Most people just need someone to help them unload the stressful things going on in their lives. Of course, not every client is looking for that, but many of these cases they just need a "friend" to help em out with something.

Tinder, tiktok, and twitter are not helping, soon metaverse and virtual reality will make all the difference for the worse. • @___xyz___
      @___xyz___ Год назад +35

      Actually, I think "Doing nothing guy" is genius branding in its own right. As other people have written, he often steps into the role as a sort of "therapist". And the common experience almost all people have with therapists is a person who literally does nothing but sit and listen to you. So instead of going to a therapist, people would rather just hire a person who purports to do the exact same thing, only explicitly. It simply makes more sense. Especially for women. I can't count the number of times I've been asked out only to be someone to whom they can vent all their troubles. And it honestly doesn't bother me. But in a society like Japan, where people are so incredibly busy with work and interests, merely being a person who is virtually present in somebody's life is marketable. It has an inherent commercial value, because it's rare to come by even though everyone needs it.

    I think the fact he says he does nothing makes it easier for people to hire him because there are no strings attached, they don’t have to do anything either when they’re with him, they can be themselves, they can experience what it’s like just sitting next to someone and enjoy their presence without any other expectations. It’s a lot. It’s probably very soothing and healing, just to have a relaxed person next to you who doesn’t expect anything from you, he’s just there for you.

      @@ZENN0SUKE How is the companion person supposed to get money for food? It's work, it's his time and energy when he has to listen to someone telling him stuff he doesn't even want to hear, it's draining too. 85$ for session seems fine :) not scam
