States rights = different tax rates per state. I don't think people outside the US know how different each state can be and how many rights individual states have.
Yup. This. For example, you can drink alcohol at 18 in Louisiana as long as you do it inside a private residence. And I think other states have exceptions too.
Yeah, buying alcohol at 21 is tied to getting federal hyway funds or not, so all states have buying at 21. The US Virgin Islands have no hyways to speak of, and buying is 18 there.
Just as an aside, tips are not absolutely "mandatory", unless some restaurants make them so for large parties (usually 6 or 8 or more.) Tipping is strongly encouraged though, as the standard pay for waitstaff is well under our minimum wage. So it's expected to tip, but not absolutely mandatory. I was a bartender years ago, so I always tip minimum 20%, and usually better if the service is good.
Tipping is always an option even tho' it is baked into the culture. I've been in the service industry for (my whole family has) for years. 20% is on the high end. It's always been 10% as standard. Ppl want to push for more and I get that, but it shouldn't be expected on either end. I've tipped much more than 20% for ...reasons. Usually trying to make a statement/showing off. But I've also walked out the door and left 2 cents on the table. When any restaurant puts a 'mandatory' tip on the bill, it isn't legally a tip, it's a fee and has to be in writing before you order and doesn't have to be paid.

I think the misteak on the number of States comes from the United States consists of the contiguous United States plus Alaska and Hawaii. That’s 48 States plus two more. That got transferred to 50 States plus Alaska and Hawaii, which we know is wrong. Wikipedia doesn’t advertise, so they ask for donations like any non profit organization does. People are more likely to donate to charities / non profit organizations and groups during the months approaching Christmas, so they ask for money during the months approaching Christmas. End of year donations are more common because people are in a giving mood because of Christmas, and they want to qualify for a tax write off (reduction of taxes owed) since cash or other donations of valuable items are tax deductible if done before January the first. I've given the "how are you" greetings a lot of thought. It's a polite symbolic extension of your ear and heart to someone. If they are a stranger or acquaintance, we don't expect anything but a "good, and you?" It would be considered rude to unload about daily details, but it opens the door for if you actually needed help or something of the like. If you say it to a real friend or family member, then you would expect small details/complaints about their day or week. So overall, it is a polite extension of yourself to a stranger if they needed it. Ive seen it used as an example of the superficial nature of Americans, but its actually an example of American politeness. They just expect a stranger to show their politeness by not unnecessarily unloading on them and just returning the gesture.
I've never seen more than a 10% sales tax in any state. I've been to 44 of the 50 states. That being said, just figure 10% to make it easy, but it's usually going to be a little less around 7 on average. Also there are a few states that dont have any sales tax, so it is actually the sticker price. Those states just charge a higher income tax as opposed to charging sales tax
I think long drives are one of the things I'd miss most if I moved away from the US. I'm from Texas. When I go back to visit my sister, it's a 14 hour drive to her house. I leave at 6 AM, and I'm there by 8 PM. Outside of stopping for gas/coffee/restroom, I drive it straight through.

My state, Massachusetts, just had it on the ballot whether to change how servers are paid, making employers pay them minimum $15/hr to reduce tipping. Servers begged everyone to vote no. They make far more getting tips than they ever would making $15+ an hour. The question greatly failed, and we are staying with our regular tipping culture.
Here in Florida sales tax on basically all items is 7% on the dollar, so if your bill comes out to 9.99, multiply it by 0.07 and you get .69 in tax so final price would be 10.69$
I mean, Britian is technically the reason why we never converted to the metric system. President Jefferson had the intention of switching the US to the metric system and then a British ship sunk the French vessel that was carrying the units to assist in educating people in the Atlantic. So... Yeah.
@9:30 The same product costs different depending on where you live, as tax codes vary from cities to counties to states. So the final cost of the product is only determined at where the point of sale takes place.
And theres good reason for it, people decide how local government uses their money via voting. Why should someone 2000 miles away decide how much im taxed and for what programs? For a tiny little country like the Uk it makes perfect sense to only have 1. (and if a 5% tax difference in price means you can no longer afford something, you probably shouldnt be on vacation lol, keep working and save up)
As far as Metric versus Imperial I'll give one good example. It takes one joule to heat up 1 milliliter of water 1 degree Centigrade (Or Celsius) Which means a middle school student could easily tell you how much energy it takes to boil a pot of water after measuring how much was inside. Whereas almost every American can't do that equation because they have no frame of reference to those conversions.
22:27 I know what you mean I cannot picture metric distances at all despite knowing the conversions. If it’s not feet yards miles it might as well be cubits
One other thing about IDs. A lot of stores CAN'T process the transaction at the register unless they scan your ID. They have to have it for the register to process. Otherwise they have to override, or use their own.
Four States have zero sales tax, which of course means that forty six States have sales tax. Many States have a State sales tax of six or seven percent. Then a County and or a City may vote and approve 1/8% sales tax for twenty years to pay for things such as new construction of bridges, libraries, schools, parks, etcetera, etcetera. There are hundreds if not thousands of places that have a different sales tax rate than the city or county or State next to them only a few miles / kilometers away. Here’s a list of the top ten cities with the highest sales taxes. Tacoma, Washington (10.3%) Chicago, Illinois (10.25%) Fremont, California (10.25%) Long Beach, California (10.25% Oakland, California (10.25%) Seattle, Washington (10.25%) Birmingham, Alabama (10%) Baton Rouge, Louisiana (9.95%) Memphis, Tennessee (9.75%) St. Louis, Missouri (9.679%+)
There are 18 year old girls fresh out of high school who can work at a nice restaruant and make more than a UK doctor lol. The reason we still tip is because if waiters and waitresses were paid the same hourly wage as UK waiters/waitresses, they would effectively get their wages slashed in half or more. Hard to unionize when everyone would lose money for doing it.
I hope you do get to go to the Rickenbacker factory/museum. I have a Rickenbacker myself, and I love it. And on the shooting, I'm not exactly in a touristy location, but if you're ever in Northwest Ohio, I could arrange some time at a shooting range.
About six years ago, I was working at a semi-regional big-box retail company; and had a junior police officer (still in training, had the attitude of a kid who honestly needed to get his ass beat to hell) try to purchase alcohol from the lane I was forced to open because the company refused to have more than 3 cashiers per shift, and lost his mind when his ID got declined. Tried to say that he was old enough, that he was in school to become a police officer, but flipped out on me when I told him that the system didn't care and that I wasn't going to jail for selling him alcohol no matter what he said. It was apparently a random sting operation, and when he left and went to the gas station, the gas station attendant failed and was later fired and had to go to court. Also, if a company or individual can nickel and dime you on anything, they will do so in a heartbeat and give no craps about it. Taxes are the same. Gas station essentials (milk, cold meds, anything that you would typically find at a super market) are going to be outrageously over priced.
@SkewtLilbttm Depends on the state and the judge. Where I was at that time, the judge had lost a family member to an underage drunk driver hitting them. What ended up happening, was anytime there was an underage drunk driving incident that the authorities could trace back to someone, there was a good chance whoever sold the minor alcohol or whoever gave them alcohol (especially if it ended in a fatal accident) would more than likely be arrested. Don't know if they still do that in that area, but yeah.
In Ireland, I would tell the barperson, "Have one for yourself," toward the end of the night. Is this okay? I wouldn't do it every time I ordered, but toward the end of the night I do this. Same in Britain. Usually when I knew it was our last round.
I think some of the feeling behind metric vs imperial is that most of the world takes our culture, our movies, entertainment, inventions, but won't take the measurements. But we do have metric on the other side of our tape measures so it is a bit of a mixed bag here as well.
I've been watching you guys for a while and have to write this, sorry. On the left sits Leprechaun and on the right sits Joker. I had to do it, forgive me.
The US uses Metric on some things too. We have artillery and tank cannons that 105 mm or 155 mm guns and so on. All of the Bullet ammo for guns is denoted in metric like 5.56x45 mm NATO round. It's not true that it is never used anywhere in the US, but separate from certain places it isn't used that much at all. So we do have some hybrid stuff. There are also weights in the US at weight lifting gyms that can be in KG instead of pounds.
It's not only the States but the Cities & Counties with in the State. Here in Washington State, the State tax rate is 6.5 , but in Seattle it's almost 10 per cent as they have a stadium tax which charge a little extra at hotels & restaurants to pay down stadium bonds. Then 4 counties along I-5 pay extra on license plates renewal for the light rail. The State has a Sin tax that why alcohol , tobacco and gas cost so much. Lucky I only worked the Seattle area and live close to Mt. Rainier.
Tipping is also a choice in America. Its just that tip workers usually rely on it so its kinda shitty if you dont tip. The only times i dont tip is if the server was absolutely horrible
Lots of Europeans believe that there are 52 states for some reason. It’s 50. We refer to the “contiguous 48” for the ones sharing borders. Often shipping will be listed as a given price for “the lower 48,” or “excluding Hawaii and Alaska.” The phrase “continental states” sometime means the contiguous 48, and sometimes means those plus Alaska. Another part of the confusion is that the territories like Puerto Rico have had votes to try and become states, and and get a non voting representative in congress.
I was surprised that in some countries they teach that the US has 52 states. I'm an American, and I'm puzzled which territories/districts they are including. Maybe Washington DC and Puerto Rico, which both may become states someday. BTW, great channel and content!
i knew as woman that worked 11am to 11pm ,3 days a week . so she worked to lunch and dinner crowd . at a nice place not the best or wrost. she made 45 dollars an hour in tips.
I sell car parts and am constantly quoting two prices, the part price and the total sale price after tax… it’s insane 😂 I’m used to it but it’s also ridiculous how many ways things are taxed here in the U.S. This part is $300. Now, please give me $324.40 lol
Used to be able to smoke everywhere..You're doctor would be smoking while giving you an exam..By the early 90's is when they started phasing out smoking every where.
It's not entirely true that we only use the Imperial system for measurements. It is becoming more of a hybrid system. Most people I know use both systems, and both systems are taught in school. Though they gloss over the Metric system, it is still taught.
A lot of this is specific to certain areas. For example, the cigarette thing isn't really true. There are a lot of people here who smoke. However, there are specific places you're allowed to smoke, generally outside. Almost all places in the US don't allow smoking inside.
Honestly criticism of the government is actually what drives us. It makes them improve. Every single criticism is talked about and a plan is put forward to change aspects do it runs better. It’s how certain senators or congressmen are ousted and new ones are put in.
I agree that the business passing on their employee expenses to the customer is bullshit but at the same time it’s a major reason why service is excellent here compared to most parts of the world.
At least in the U.K. you have politicians that WILL resign. I was only ten, but when President Nixon resigned, it was historic. In the U.K., you have PMs that often resign over principle. Most of our U.S. politicians are not familiar with the word.
We didn't sing the national anthem every morning, at least at my school in the southeast. The pledge of allegiance wasn't uncommon, especially in elementary school, but not the national anthem much aside from events or something like that
The gun control thing here can change based on county, let alone states. I live in Seattle which is pretty liberal, a drive an hour north or south and you're in rural areas and all the politics swap.
Many of us do still smoke. The law is 50 feet (15.24 meters). From any entrance or exit to a public building. In many cases that is impossible. Because the entrance or exit to another building near where you are is within that distance 🙄. I'm convinced that was on purpose. They couldn't outright ban tobacco. So make it impossible without breaking the law. Sounds like my government and legal system to me 😒. But almost no one will say or do anything if you don't. As long as you're not directly in front of an entrance. I've found around 10 feet (3 meters) to be sufficient. And as long as the smoke is not billowing towards the entrance and directly at people. Although if someone does pass you and doesn't bother to avoid it. And they're a passive aggressive Karen. You might get a fake cough and an attitude. But as long as you're not right next to people or an entrance to a building almost anyone that isn't a passive aggressive cu@t will leave you alone. Also America is the literal size of Europe. You're not seeing the West and East Coast in the same trip unless you want all your time spent traveling to just get there. Pick a side of the country per trip. You're not seeing New York City and Los Angeles in one trip. New York City and Florida maybe. Even then it's a long way to travel just to get from a-b. Pick a coast. East Coast you can do New York City, Boston, Washington DC and Charleston or New Orleans in one week. West Coast you can do Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vegas, etc in one week. I wouldn't suggest you try to criss cross the country in one trip. Your entire trip will be travel time. And only possible by plane. Compounded severe jet lag and no time to enjoy anything because all your time will be travel time. You can only try to see it all if you have a month or more to do it. Not in a week and certainly not in a few days. A single coast can be done in a week and still have time to not rush your way through in a single day. If you only have a few days. Stick to a particular city or smaller area.
There were never any disagreements within America about how many states we have. It's 50, water is wet, if you think they are a different number of state's you're simply wrong. We have a couple of US territories like Puerto Rico, but they're not states. Maybe that's where the confusion comes in?
Its weird to me when Europeans talk about the poor enslaved wait staff. They make more money on tips then they would if they were just paid the same flat minimum wage, they're not exactly suffering. Its not a "stealth tax," its entirely optional whether you tip or not. if the servers were paid more and tips were eliminated the cost of the dishes goes up to cover employers increased cost meaning everyone loses. It also helps to motivate people to do their job, which is a good thing since as a customer it improves my experience. Its fine if you guys don't do it that way, I wouldn't go to a European country and lecture anyone about what you should do.
Here in the USA we also have a store chain called "Walgreens" which is supposed to be the American equivalent to UK's store chain "Boots". Dude over exaggerated a bit there with the smoking cigarettes thing, when you're smoking outside nobody can tell you anything, if anybody with a child has a problem with it the good lord gave em walking sticks and baby strollers for a reason, especially if you were already there first.
You dont HAVE to tip here, although its very frowned upon not to as most waiters make under 2 to 3 dollars a hour.. ive only not left a tip twice and both times the waiter was extremely rude, my dad is a shitty tipper and i worked in food for 7 years so i always try to at least tip above 15. Also the "tip culture" has gotten absolutely ridiculous here theres prompts to tip everywhere now, which in my opinion pisses people off and less likely to tip somewhere they are actually waited on. If you're walking up to a counter and getting something a tip seems ridiculous. Hell even my local liquor store has a damn tip jar 🙄
Sorry to keep commenting but I think you guys have a general view of pricing like many pedestrians here, but the way they have leveraged state taxes has been pretty fair. If the whole of USA would pay the same tax depending on location, that is literally more communistic than democratic because its flat rates for all peoples no matter the situation.
Also, I am an accountant an learned that Canadian and UK accounting is like baby math compared to the amount of accounting we do in USA. You guys don't have the vast amount of need for us accountants, so you don't get the same type. For instance, I can see an accountant on Canadian TV (or poltician, public figure) and think they are relevant but its relevancy in the glaze of what, 40 million people. Its a lot. In USA the accounting gets very complex due to states, I am only stating I am amazed at how overqualified I am to pay state, property, sales, etc. tax because most countries (even powers) have such cavemen like systems. The USA is so far ahead of people that I don't think people comprehend.
There are 50 states and 2 territories, guam and puerto rico, so thats the confusion there... lol As far as the rest of the comments go... Ash wore it better 🤣

Tacoma, Washington (10.3%)
Chicago, Illinois (10.25%)
Fremont, California (10.25%)
Long Beach, California (10.25%
Oakland, California (10.25%)
Seattle, Washington (10.25%)
Birmingham, Alabama (10%)
Baton Rouge, Louisiana (9.95%)
Memphis, Tennessee (9.75%)
St. Louis, Missouri (9.679%+)
"sorry we had to put a tiny cut there"
*doesn't edit out the cut* 💀💀
lol
You need to watch SNL Washington's Dream and Washington's Dream 2
Go to jail? Fined maybe
Often shipping will be listed as a given price for “the lower 48,” or “excluding Hawaii and Alaska.”
The phrase “continental states” sometime means the contiguous 48, and sometimes means those plus Alaska.
Another part of the confusion is that the territories like Puerto Rico have had votes to try and become states, and and get a non voting representative in congress.
I'm a truck driver and have been in all but three states in mainland US and I smoke ain't nobody ever treated me bad anywhere
Holy shit, the dwelling was in camp verde AZ. Im shocked i just saw that. It's a small town.
Wolter is great! He’s as friendly and jovial as Rick Steves.
Just FYI, a British pint is 25% bigger than an American pint.
Tj Maxx is an American company owned by homegoodd where I worked for years. Tk Maxx is the uk version I believe
Though they gloss over the Metric system, it is still taught.
smoking is not weird here at all. it’s not as big as it was obviously but i haven’t seen anyone be rude about it in a long long time
Yeah that was totally exaggerated lol. It’s just you can’t do it indoors anymore.
A lot of this is specific to certain areas. For example, the cigarette thing isn't really true. There are a lot of people here who smoke. However, there are specific places you're allowed to smoke, generally outside. Almost all places in the US don't allow smoking inside.
It's fascinating, like exactly the way that you describe Brexit is what Trump is like for us.
Honestly criticism of the government is actually what drives us. It makes them improve. Every single criticism is talked about and a plan is put forward to change aspects do it runs better. It’s how certain senators or congressmen are ousted and new ones are put in.
Improvement? All I see is decline.
Rofl USA can't even figure out which of the three people who currently act like they're President are the real President
There are 50 states total, but people think that Alaska and Hawaii aren't part of the 50...so they think 52 states.
In Texas you don't pay tax on food just other goods and tips are optional
I have to tell my mom about TJ Maxx. She goes there everyday!
In California sales tax is set by each county.
*Dave: "Canader"*
wubsworld8946 british and aussies do that with other countries too like saying austrailier hahaha
@@Antiguan2222 same with Boston it's tuner not tuna lol
@@jahnj2523 😂🤣😂
I'm American and I was taught 52 states as well.
No you werent
@@bucketheadkfc Oh, ok. You're totally right, everything you think is true.
@@IronDruids I think there is 50 states...and that is true.
@@IronDruids maybe your friends told you that, but everyone else was taught that there are 50 states.
@@bucketheadkfc Yes, maybe my friends did. Everything you say is true.
We didn't sing the national anthem every morning, at least at my school in the southeast. The pledge of allegiance wasn't uncommon, especially in elementary school, but not the national anthem much aside from events or something like that
Dave looks like Beaker from The Muppets!
The guy in the video and Ashe matchy matchy lol
There has never been more than 50 states.
I believe Ash got her shirt at the same place the commentator of this video got his.
Dave is that the German iron cross on your elbow? If so, why?
It should make you angry that your VAT is 20% !!!!!
Walgreens owns Boots. They bought it, or at least the controlling stake in it, some years ago for about $5 billion.
You never heard of "the lower 48" ever being said. That means the mainland, not Alaska and Hawaii.
You look so pretty in your sweater. versuses the guy in the video ❤❤❤
Yeah cuz he's not wearing a sweater
Come to Philly!
If you come to Texas, Don't put bbq sauce on your brisket. If it needs sauce find a better brisket place.
Also, don't tell us how big our portions are... we know, we're working on it.
How do I censor the left side of the screen?
It's crazy when you think we thru the british out over taxes
who's captured wikipedia?
We have 50 states, a lot of people want Washington DC and Puerto Rico to become states.
DC will never become a state unless they change it in the constitution.
I'm gonna fill up your comment section. I think its awesome your wife is from Zimbabwe!

There are 50 states and 2 territories, guam and puerto rico, so thats the confusion there... lol As far as the rest of the comments go... Ash wore it better 🤣
