The wild deployment of CCTV significantly dropped the crime rate to ice point few years ago, no one in China really cares about the cameras unless ones are ready to do something bad. Couldn't imagine left a phone in public space without being stolen back then, now no one would dare touching it.

Actually, if you have looked at the social developments in the West, you should probably understand what those "personal choices" mean for society, and why there are societies that will remind you of your "duty" to society. Also, it isn't such a bad thing to try to stabilize society, and a pregnancy after 30 will flag you as a risk/late pregnancy as well, because from a medical perspective, it is. This has nothing to do with culture, but with female biology. I'm a Westerner, btw.
You mention in Shanghai that all financial transactions are done through QR codes.... I do find that hard to believe considering how Chinese are known to prefer cash, Cash is king.
Aside from not giving your entire payment record to the government and private companies, NOT having a digital wallet set up in China also has the benefit that they cannot automatically fine you for traffic violations. Plus having cash I can still pay even if my phone has no power.

Many of the cameras above traffic lights are probably just traffic sensors as no one use in-ground induction loops anymore to detect cars.

Even street hawkers, newspaper booths and taxis all accept digital payment. In fact some of them decline cash payments.
