@@davidjftooley I could be wrong and please correct me if I am but I think what Terry means is that this is an excellent weapon to choose if you only have one arm. Most conventional stocked firearms can probably be used almost normally from a seated position if you happen to be missing a leg but if an arm is missing then that complicates things quite a bit. With this rifle you don't have to mess with charging handles, pumps, levers, magazines, or anything else like that. Just point and pull the trigger.

This the weapon I bought for my wife to use in home defense. It’s is very light, especially the non wood version, minimal recoil and it is stupidly simple to operate and has minimal failure scenarios. In a stress situation I didn’t feel comfortable with my wife and a pump shotgun or even a semi auto. I put a light on it with a bright hot spot, she basically points the light hot spot at a target and pulls the trigger. It’s loaded with federal buck shot and works well for a smaller female.
Paul is the only RUclips producer that when I watch an episode about six months to a year after I find myself watching his episodes again...and then a third and then fourth time and I’ve probably done more than that. His content is infectious and extremely entertaining for me
@@bwilliamstown "Just wait till we get the Supreme Court Judge" Hopefully it's not modeled after the one that keeps falling on the floor, or the one that you never see and most people think is already dead.
I bought one as a beginner firearm due to the fact that it is so easy to operate. About a year after that purchase I had a break-in situation that did NOT result in any confrontation. Even still...I was THANKFUL for that firearms's ease of operation that night after being awakened out of a sound sleep with an overwhelming jolt of adrenaline. Being at the range is one thing...being in a real world situation is something else.
Literally just yesterday I saw one of these online and thought "Wouldn't it be great if Paul Harrell did a review of one of these?" Absolutely perfect timing
One of these has been on my short list for a few years now (I love unique things) but the few reviews on YT are all over the place. So, I'm guessing it's a hit or miss type firearm.
Taurus has really improved the quality of the firearms in the last decade. They are making some really good quality guns at a hell of a lot more affordable prices. I think they might get better and better over time. The current president of Brazil stating that he wants every Brazilian household to have a firearm👍🏼. Now that’s a great leader who wants the best for his countrymen.
@@erikcrouch7881 It looks really cool, if you buy only for practicality that's just what you want out of a gun. Personally I'd REALLY love if a better manufacturer gets on making their own revolving carbine of the same caliber, 'cause I don't have the disposable income to just buy for style and then have a letdown at the range, but some people find the price low enough to get that carbine, "who cares if the groupings aren't great I can pose with it and feel like a modern cowboy". It's not about being financially masochistic, the looks still give something back to the owner to feel positive about their purchase.
Very true... However I wonder what this would be like if it was an actual shotgun with a smooth-bore barrel.??? Likewise, what would the Taurus Judge be like with a smooth-bore barrel.? I would imagine that the accuracy would improve a lot for all types of 410 ammo, and drop a fair amount for 45-Colt, but no-one buys these to shoot 45-Colt anyway...
I love how Paul can take what should be a boring exercise in math/physics and make it fun to watch AND draw some good out of an otherwise mediocre performance by a firearm. Paul, you are the best !
Putting all other things aside, a double action carbine for home defence is actually a great idea! Easy to learn and master, safe and dependible even after years of storing.
I think Paul nailed this review. The one I own, will shoot the .45 colts out to 50 yards in 5 inch groups with no issues. Something that he could have done with his second .45 colt ammo choice. I have never bother shooting slugs since the .45 colt would be heavier hitting than any .410 slugs. I have found that most buckshot to group well out to about 20 yards and I was surprised that most brands really seem to spread out at 25 yards. I definitely agree that most .410 smooth bore shotguns will do a better job of holding a pattern out to 25 yards than this rifle. So what would make this a firearm you may want to own? Paul said it, (home defense for inexperienced firearm users or those that are recoil sensitive ). It's light, short, has very little recoil and a simple manual of arms. With 5 rounds of .45 colt or defensive buckshot you have a solid defensive firearm. Even a 18 or 20 inch pump .410 shotguns will be 4 to 6 inches longer overall, and require more dexterity and practice to use efficiently than this little rifle.
Paul Harrell, the Consumer Reports of firearms/ammunitions... >_< No BS, no misleading cherry picking, just the plain un-varnished truth.. God i love this man.
Some firearm models are made using unusual designs and being unique in nature. This seems to fit this one. It is a carbine version of the pistol model. It is the same as buying a 9mm pistol accompany with 9mm carbine that uses the same magazines. Someone who bought the pistol might like the carbine model too. It might not pass the rules for Duck hunting; but is it a rifle or is it a shotgun. If it is a rifle it is likely not illegal for hunting most places whatever you have it loaded with. That will have to be decided by the first game warden you likely might meet. If you are worried; just use wooden plugs in the cylinders to reduce the capacity to three shots. That alone would be fun to see what they would think about its legal standings.
@ike nation I didn't say you can't kill with it. Simply that I do not like the firearm. But if you want to talk ballistics, I'll bite. First, you can take down an elephant with a 22. Most any caliber is capable of killing anything. Now for the judge specifically. The pistol is most definitely underpowered. Especially compared to people's expectations. You can help that a bit by buying the right ammo. If you buy the judge specific loads, you should get a little more punch. Not due to any certain shot size, or special disc like you see in the pdx offerings. Rather the powders used. They use faster burning powders to negate the lack of a barrel. (And maybe theoretically whatever you may loose from the cylinder gap vs a classic sealed up shotgun. Though I doubt that is even measurable) All that being said, that's not the only reason I dont like the gun. Taurus is one of the reasons. Even if they finally are producing a decent product, and no longer selling guns to Yemeni terrorists, I will never own another Taurus, simply on principle. Along with the poor ballistics (even with the $1 a round ammo), the inefficient nature due to the previously mentioned points, and less than ideal form factor of a fireball shooting revolver with a comically large cylinder. I'd never judge (no pun intended) or underestimate anyone carrying it. But that's my POV on the weapon.
You want one until you fire one, because cylinder gap is a thing on rifle length-revolvers too. The Cobray Street Sweeper was terrible for many other reasons, but having your forearm hit with the concussion and unburnt powder every shot certainly didn't help.
@Apex Gemini, As per Mr. H. near the end of the video. Escaping gas and ejecta was one of the prime reasons revolver-rifles died out over a century ago. The deflection features on this contemporary weapon add a little weight to it with a lot more complexity to its unloading/loading cycle. The big negatory from me is just how finicky this gun is with ammunition vs. accuracy potential.
I am absolutely impressed with how much content this guy has put out there, and the fact that he's STILL doing it, today! As in like, Paul Harrell is still at it, still recording videos, and posted this one, today! I honestly don't know how he does it, because I feel like with his experience and age, my bones would be too damn tired to make all these videos. Nonetheless, it is amazing, and I really enjoy his narration and in-depth style. Thanks, Paul - you're a real rockstar!
I purchased one of these for my mom. I knew she wouldn’t shoot it much and I wanted something simple for her to operate. She has a .38 special revolver, so I thought this would be similar and something she could handle. I mounted a light on the rail and she really likes the gun. I loaded it with the 3” buck shot.
I have the stainless version considerably more accurate than what you're getting, not a tack driver but not bad either, which could address another issue, the lack of consistency in manufacture.
If there's one thing you can count on from Taurus/Rossi, it's that although they are capable of building a quality gun they just can't seem to make two of them in a row.
Taurus firearms appeared to be better made than Rossi. Those marked Rossi seemed to be on the level of Charter Arms in fit and finish. I can recall Rossi making decent slide action .22 rifles years ago. Suppose that Taurus took it over to increase its production capacity.
I bought a Taurus Judge when they first came out. Mine does not shoot the 3-inch Shotshells. The one that Mr Harrell has is a larger later model. Mine has a 3 inch barrel and a really nice black finish on it . and it is fairly accurate at 7 to 15 yd. I once shot it at 50 yards into a 8 inch paper plate and put all five rounds into it with American Eagle 230 grain soft points. I just consider it a short-range blaster. I just keep it as a novelty but I have had quite a few people want to buy it from me because they like the finish on it
@@russellsandidge4210, Sounds like a keeper. Guns such as the Judge fill a multi-purpose roll as few other handguns do. Might not take down a brown bear with a single shot, but it should do the job with two or three.
Every time I am tempted to write off .45 ACP as outdated - I get reminded with well done tests like this one done by Paul. Low velocity and big slugs is not necessarily a bad thing when it comes to self defense.
When I discovered Paul I had fun going back and watching all the videos he had made before I found him. It was a lot of fun. I was sad when I watched them all, now I have to wait for a once a week dose of Paul instead of having him on demand.
Great video as always Paul, honestly for whatever reason I've always been interested in this firearm. I don't know why they haven't made a version chambered in .357, clearly the gimmick of using shot shells isn't that practical. A nice 8 or even 10 (you don't really have to worry about thickness of the cylinder with a carbine) shot .357 longarm I think would if nothing else be fun. But what do I know, keep doing what you do brother, thanks for putting in all the work.
Happy at the end he admitted it could be helpful for some. Teenagers, Wives, Elderly etc it could actually be a decent choice, and in some countries in some locals approved by some Policia Captain, if could be allowed as a farm tool to take out pests w birdshot...yet loaded with Buck for HD.
I bought it for the reasons Paul said at the end. As a big double action revolver it can sit loaded forever without issue. It is also something more powerful than an handgun that my elderly mother can use since she is familiar with revolvers.
@@taraswertelecki3786 22 caliber is the most underestimated caliber in the world but it's killed a boat load of people......... stands to reason that other calibers have that issue as well.
Interesting takeaway right there at the end. It reminds me of one of the rare instances where Hollywood "got it right" on something gun-related. In the movie "Blue Ruin", this gun is lent by somebody who knows guns to somebody who doesn't, for that very reason - of all the guns he owns, it's the simplest to use, and the only one the borrower has any chance of being effective with, with no training.
Good luck finding parts for it. I bought my wife one in 2013 and the rear sight assembly literally crumbled when adjusting it. I carried it back to the Gander Mountain where I bought it and they said it was a Rossi problem. I contacted Rossi and they did not have the part but to keep checking back and they would send me one under warranty. I soon found out this was an ongoing reoccurring issue with Circuit Judge owners. Fast Fwd to 2023 my wife recently past away and I contacted Rossi again and was still told they don't have/can't get the rear sight assembly for her Circuit Judge. I called Taurus and was told the same thing but was sent an email with possible after market parts from various vendors, none of which had anything remotely close to working. I own 4 Taurus hand guns and have never had an issue with their products or getting parts but with Rossi it seems to be a whole different story all together, so buyer beware.
I've recently gotten to compare a box of the cheapest ammo my local gun store had available to two boxes of "match grade" ammo, and I have to say the results were astonishing. Five shots per group at 125 yards. With the "premium" ammo, the shots were barely more than one and a half inches apart, while with the cheap ammo, it was all over the place. I even changed ammo types in between to make sure it wasn't me "warming up" or losing focus or such. I would never have guessed how much difference expensive ammo could make.
I once had a stuck case on a revolver and did not listen to the Black Belt Grand Wizard Master Class Target Whatever shooter. I hit the ejector rod and lost my hand. I had to type this with only one hand and my nose.

About the only reason I can imagine for choosing a Taurus Judge, or Rossi Circuit Judge would be if the alternative was a knife or pointy stick & in the latter's case, it would depend on the length of the stick.
I wish that Rossi had brought the rifle out here in the United States in all three calibers that it comes in in the UK and Australia Over there it's available in a 22 LR / 22 Mag with removable cylinders it's also available in a 44 Magnum I called Taurus / Rossi and they told me that we can get the rifles here but they have to be special ordered I wonder how many other firearms we don't get here that come out in Australia and the United Kingdom

There was a time when I wanted one of these just because of its uniqueness, but that wore off really quick once I started watching videos about it. I have not seen a video yet where they had a favorable outlook on this gun. I appreciate your time and effort in order to bring us these videos and I look forward to your next one.
Pros: Mechanically interesting and relatively simple. Also offers a variety of ammo types for one gun. Cons: like all judges they cover a wider area of applications but are middling at best in each of them.
When this rifle came out I was excited. I went to the shop and checked it out but the quality was terrible, it was way too lightweight and even for the low price I decided to pass on it. then, a few yrs ago I was in a pawn shop and saw one for sale, checked it out again and decided again not to get it. Its a shame, I'd like to have a quality rifle in this configuration.
Years ago I was looking for a firearm (lets be honest, it's not truly a rifle or a shotgun) for use as a home defense weapon for a recoil sensitive person (who had once had shoulder surgery). I certainly didn't expect them to practice a ton or hunt with the firearm. This is exactly what Paul is talking about at the end of the video (down to the exact shell choosen, 000 buck 5 pellet). A friend and I loaded up on all the different types of ammo we could find at the store (with Obama era ammo availability) and went shooting with bird shot in two shot sizes, 00 buck, 000 buck, and .45 (hornandy critical defense was all I could find). The "rifle" I had purchased did not have this "spin stopper" thing and I don't think I'd want to screw with one if it did. We did our testing between 5 and 20 yards figuring that at that range we had met and exceeded the application distance for this firearm. Bird shot out of that gun spread incredibly quickly in both sizes (6 and 8 I think) and 00 buck was hard to hit with from any reasonable distance. However from the distances we shot at, 000 buck grouped well (only shot at 15 yards max) and .45 made a group that I could cover easily with my palm. Maybe we got a gem, maybe it liked that ammo, maybe the quality of them has gotten worse over the years. I can certainly vouch for the reloading and the placement of the ejector rod being issues. I'd love to see a meat target with 000 buck at 10-15yards. It was a very fun gun to shoot, but outside of recoil sensitive home defense, I think it is just a range toy. Love the video Paul, sorry to see that your example didn't want to group with .45 (trust me, you're a better shot than me). I'd love to send you the example I shot, but it can't be spared as it continues to serve. As always I was happy to watch your content and can't wait for the next one.
This is kind of exactly what I expected. That much longer of a barrel is pushing the 225gr 45 right up to the transsonic region. This is the same reason why the shot group from 115gr 9mm out of a Glock 17 balloons up out past 25 yards: any time you get close to or pass through the sound barrier most projectiles become unstable. If you use a much heavier projectile (or less powder) that stays reliably below 1000fps, it will probably shoot just fine.
The Circuit Judge is just one of my many guns but it fills a particular need for me. I have a small farm with neighbors close by and I'm responsible for all my rounds should I need to protect my animals. The .410 is the safest choice in this regard while giving me the option to switch to .45 colt when needed. I've loaded the cylinder with both. All shooting would be at close range so as not to hit my animals by accident. It is by far the lightest and fastest rifle to put on target that I own. For other applications, I've got 12ga, 30-30, and more at my disposal. Oh! And I always wear a sidearm. So the right tool for the right job.
I would like to point out that rifled slugs from shotguns in general lose accuracy when fired through a rifled barrel. They’re designed for smooth bore barrels, I think a better test in regards to the slugs would be to test out 410 slugs that are meant to be fired through a rifled barrel.
Thanks Paul for the coverage. I've either looked at one or picked one up and handled it. Buying one has crossed my mind a few times over the years. Haven't bought one but I like the look of the Rossi stock and design. The idea of 45/410 combo is a good one, western style, double action, Rifle. I'm glad you covered "different types of ammo..." that was impressive as much as important issues there. Great review/coverage and a good report 👍👍 and ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
To my knowledge Taurus has only ever made one gun the I really enjoyed, that being the tx-22. I know they've had a lot of quality control issues with them, just as they have with other guns, but I seem to have gotten lucky and that pistol is hands down my favorite gun to shoot
Supposedly, their quality control became a lot better around 2016 after they had been bought by CBC. I'm looking into buying a Taurus/Rossi .357 mag lever action at the moment and I was told I should look for the CBC stamp and not buy an older model without it.
I have owned a Rossi 4.10 lever action. Didn't like the service I got when I had issues with it. Sold it and never looked back. Before that, I bought a Taurus Raging Bull 44 Mag. with an 8 1/4" barrel. I love the accuracy and trouble free shooting enjoyment of that BFG!
Interesting! I had one of these and never found the accuracy to be that poor, though I've no idea what the differences might be. Also, the benefits of the light weight can't be understated; this is a fantastic trail gun.
Yeah, I haven't fired mine that often, but I am also suspicious that he accidentally got a particularly bad one. I could very easily be wrong though. I'm pretty sure I've shot mostly birdshot out of it.
I just acquired a Rossi Tuffy Survival rifle and had questions about when to use the rifled choke vs the other one. You answered my question with this video 💪👌
My first gun was a Mossberg 510 in .410. It's killed countless squirrels, rabbits, and deer. I've always been curious about how it compares to rifle or pistol penetration.
You pretty much summed it up in the end, this is my wife's home defense, a few years ago I got a couple p-model cimarron, Rossi 92 and some other cowboy themed toys and with those I started making 45, a bit later I saw this at the local shop and thought my wife would enjoy playing with it and she really likes it, she's very confident with it and in the end that's what matters ,you could have your very own a-10 warthog but if your more confident with a sling shot and a bag of rocks you should probably stick to that, I kinda think it looks cool but I can hold some pretty impressive groups at various ranges with rossi92, henry bbs,Marlin 1895, out of those the Henry is the most dead nuts accurate stacking groups with handloads and the Rossi and Marlin are not really enough different to argue over...then there's the circuit judge, lol as Paul said for in home defense it's not bad,for any distance at all it's not really my cup of tea but she likes it.
The home defense option is an interesting niche I hadn't considered for firearms in the Judge series. For its revolver counterpart, beyond "guilty pleasure range toy", the only application I was ever able to think of was maybe for someone like a rancher who needs one relatively handy platform capable of doing multiple things, from shooting small vermin to bringing down medium game/predators... though it would be doing these multiple things rather poorly in comparison to other specialized firearms. I'm sure there are some out there that such a generalist "jack of all trades" weapon makes sense, though for most I think even this makes more sense on paper than in practice despite my attempt at a thought experiment.
Excellent review - THANK YOU! I got one about 10 years ago when I began my late-life (+/- 50) foray into shooting. Loved the look and feel, and believed it could be my “do everything” gun. But as the saying goes: “Jack of all trades, master of none”… Indeed. I too determined it’s best use to be home defense for the reasons you stated. Otherwise, it’s unfortunate this neat little revolver/carbine doesn’t at least provide a decent level of accuracy. Im keeping mine for wife to have when Im away. I can’t think of a better HD weapon for an inexperienced shooter.

Hopefully it's not modeled after the one that keeps falling on the floor, or the one that you never see and most people think is already dead.
No joke! Never a fun situation to be in. Glad you made it thru. I froze for what seemed like a hour when I was awoken, then my reflexes came to me!
Being awakened at 130 am with a silouette standing 6 ft beyond your feet is..... Exciting.
I had my 1911 in the bed, as always.
Beats the hell out of a pointy stick!! Seriously, though, I do think it would make a decent in-home defense gun for the reasons you bought it.
This is actually making me look into this. Ease of operation and five shots when you are startled and close quarters
Lightning Strike thanks for the advice.

This is my surprised face.
@Evan Moyer That's a strange way of spelling 'masochist.'
The Judge series really is terrible at everything, and good at nothing...
Let's be fair the SW defender sucks too unless you're 65 year old blind woman
Very true...
However I wonder what this would be like if it was an actual shotgun with a smooth-bore barrel.??? Likewise, what would the Taurus Judge be like with a smooth-bore barrel.?
I would imagine that the accuracy would improve a lot for all types of 410 ammo, and drop a fair amount for 45-Colt, but no-one buys these to shoot 45-Colt anyway...
Wow, a very thoughtful presentation, vastly better than anything else on RUclips.

Hi Bob. Hope everything is going well for you.
Agree!

I love Paul, cant say the same for the Judge variants. Stay safe everyone.

You know it brother 😉👍
@ike nation
I didn't say you can't kill with it.
Though I doubt that is even measurable)
All that being said, that's not the only reason I dont like the gun.
My Judge had the same problem. I replaced the plastic rear sight, after it fell off. Now it shoots great.
I always wanted a revolving rifle after seeing them in one of my grandpa's old gun books.
There is a reason why they aren't common.
It would be cool if someone less “gimmicky” would make one. I really like the idea too, just quit trying to make everything into a baby shotgun lol.
The russians have the MTs 255,there isn't much sense in a revolving rifle, but a revolving shotgun may have more use.
Another person in the comment said his example had ok groups, that backs up your hypothesis

Really like the 410 slug vs meat target. 410 is highly underestimated.
Even the bird shot 410 loads are not to be underestimated, at close range they can and have killed people.
And as Paul has demonstrated, better than nothing or a pointed stick - although with the Judge, I might want a stick.

Great video. Thanks Paul !

About the only reason I can imagine for choosing a Taurus Judge, or Rossi Circuit Judge would be if the alternative was a knife or pointy stick & in the latter's case, it would depend on the length of the stick.

Gunbroker currently has a 44mag listed. I've seen the 44 at a shop near me, oh, 5 yrs ago or so, and was told they've had the 22/22mag in, and even saw a 28ga at one point. Nothing fantastic about their performance, but sometimes you just want to shoot something fun and mechanical.
I've never seen a .44 Mag model in the UK. Plenty of the .22 convertible models about but they aren't great. I'd buy a .44 Mag version, better get in touch with the importer!
would not mind seeing how it performs in .22Mag and .22. I have had both in handguns/rifles. Be interesting to see if it is a firearm design issue versus a Caliber issue with them.

"you be the judge" guys why would I wanna be this gun
Pros: Mechanically interesting and relatively simple. Also offers a variety of ammo types for one gun.
Cons: like all judges they cover a wider area of applications but are middling at best in each of them.
When this rifle came out I was excited. I went to the shop and checked it out but the quality was terrible, it was way too lightweight and even for the low price I decided to pass on it. then, a few yrs ago I was in a pawn shop and saw one for sale, checked it out again and decided again not to get it.
Its a shame, I'd like to have a quality rifle in this configuration.
I goes you wouldn't have to work but people would still give money for you? /s
A like and a comment to help the channel.
Ditto
This is kind of exactly what I expected. That much longer of a barrel is pushing the 225gr 45 right up to the transsonic region. This is the same reason why the shot group from 115gr 9mm out of a Glock 17 balloons up out past 25 yards: any time you get close to or pass through the sound barrier most projectiles become unstable.
If you use a much heavier projectile (or less powder) that stays reliably below 1000fps, it will probably shoot just fine.
I don't even own a gun yet and I feel confident in going into my test. Thank You, Paul.

So, you have yet to try all of the Twenty-First Century nine millimeter Taurus pistols?......................elsullo
Supposedly, their quality control became a lot better around 2016 after they had been bought by CBC. I'm looking into buying a Taurus/Rossi .357 mag lever action at the moment and I was told I should look for the CBC stamp and not buy an older model without it.
The TX22 is on my short list, after Taurus gets the barrel situation straightened (ha, ha, ha) out.
I get 2.5in groups at 25yrds 200gr cci speer 3x red dot gun fits fine
There a is reason revolver riles wheren't much common like lever action ones, maybe these models can be used in some _"steampunk movie"_

But as the saying goes: “Jack of all trades, master of none”…
Indeed.
I too determined it’s best use to be home defense for the reasons you stated. Otherwise, it’s unfortunate this neat little revolver/carbine doesn’t at least provide a decent level of accuracy.
Im keeping mine for wife to have when Im away. I can’t think of a better HD weapon for an inexperienced shooter.
years ago I purchased a super comanche 45/410 single shot pistol its actually been very useful.... 45/410 can be a great combo but it all depends on how you want to use it....
Another gun in the “it’s better than nothing” category.
That's good stuff.
Well i guess you could use it as a club perhaps then you have a better chance of hitting something
Royal Irish come on, that’s not fair. You do have a chance of “hitting something”... just maybe, not what you were aiming at ;)
Exactly. My thought, too.
I know in some places (eg Australia) it sometimes is the best available option
This is one I came really close to owning and I'm satisfied I made the right choice by passing on it
