I work overnight security at a place where no one’s goes and this steam deck makes my 12 hour shifts a lot easier. That was my main reason for buying this and so far my only thing is I wish the battery life was longer it only lasts around 3-4 hours but I think it’s worth it. Do not forget that the Deck is also a fully functional Linux Computer, on top of being a console. Also, unlike with other consoles, you still have the benefit of games being optimized for Steam Deck hardware, but you have fully functional mod support with your games, which is huge! In other words, its the best of both worlds.
Recently i went to Finland for 2 months, and I did not miss either my Desktop Computer, nor my Ps4, cause essentially I got both devices with me in the Steam Deck. Its freeing.

For some reason this feature works better than streaming from your pc to, say.. an iPad. It has lower latency. Not sure if it’s a steam/steam deck optimization at play. Also longer battery life for sure since all the processing is offloaded. At 1280x800 I can fully max out the graphics quality from my pc as well as save space locally on steam deck.

Got it very recently and testing different stuff. The most amusing thing to me is pretty much full customisation of controls. Aside from playable experience for more demanding titles, I found Deck good for some older games that may refuse to work on high end modern setups. So far it does perfectly well with Disciples 2 and Hitman Contracts but completely gives up on Thief Gold (unresponsive and lagging menu). I'd say the battery is probably Deck's weakest point but you can tinker with GPU clock, fps caps, screen refresh rate and brightness to extend battery life. Overall, while I didn't need it in my life, I wanted it and I do not regret buying the most expensive variant.

    • @butterflyfilms939
      @butterflyfilms939 Год назад +2

Battery life will get better and better for titles from 2000 to 2022, as the compatibility layers all get optimized until there is almost no overhead. Also the GPU drivers are still adjusting to the hardware generation from 2020 and will squeeze out further 10% performance and a bit more efficiency, all benefiting the battery before there is an OLED version or newer hardware with more performance per Watt.

After the initial "ohs and awhs" I didn't use my deck much for a couple weeks, that is until I thought to bring it to my friends house and saw how easy it was to hook it up to a tv with 4 wireless controllers and play so many great couch co-op games, all without the bulk of a console or laptop. Completely underrated use-case! Now I take it everywhere just incase and play in bed a lot more lol. Another key thing is for whatever reason, having the steam deck makes me want to and actually go back and play through my catalog of barely touched singled player games. The reason behind the SD success I think is because it's a console for PC games, meaning it's a dedicated machine just for games you can do other hings on it ofc but primarily gaming.
One thing I love about the SD is the sleep mode, being able to stop and resume game whenever made a huge difference in my gaming both on consoles and the SD, not having to wonder what to play, not having to deal with sometimes extensive loading screens, menus just pick up and play.
Now obviously you can put PCs to sleep as well but it's not as convenient since for once people uses PCs for work and other things so having a game running in the background would be inconvenient.

Your video is the latest in a long string I've watched, and I cannot WAIT to buy one. Should have room in the budget in the next few months, so hopefully by summer! My biggest reasons:
    1. Couch and pick-up-and-play gaming is way more entertaining than I would have imagined, especially indie games, which my Swich and retro device have demonstrated to me.
    2. Steam prices are far cheaper than Nintendo for most games, especially indies, and having them on Steam means I have multiple ways to play them. I think the Deck is creating a Renaissance in retro, indie and pick-up games.
    3. Emulation performance on the Steam Deck is ideal for GC/PS2 level, and it can take the place of my Retroid for those systems, with a way bigger screen and more comfortable experience.
    4. In-house streaming has turned out to be a feature I value more than I anticipated, as I've experienced through Steam Link to my Retroid. Although Destiny 2 will not run natively on the deck, I can stream it by wifi from my main PC, which makes the most sense anyway to use my home internet!

This isnt Valve's issue - its x86 CPU issue. The problem is that a portable computer (because that what this is) needs a big battery, but you have space constraints. Then you have x86 CPU in it as the games you intend to play with it are written for - those are power hungry and hot , that means more power drain due to cooling. This is why things like Nintendo switch work as they are ARM based.
Dont get me wrong. I really like the Deck and I think its a great first gen unit. However we have to manage our expectations on what can be physically done with x86 platform.

    • @Cyanwasserstoff

@@Cyanwasserstoff Exactly , this is the main problem. This is why powerfull ARM cpus like the Apple M series cant game. Apple's Roseta translation layer doesnt work.
There is fundemantle difference in the instruction set to the CPU between x86 and ARM which is the problem. The Steam deck is bound to x86 because its ment to intigrate the Steam library which is 99% full with x86 based games.
People just need to manage their expectations. Valve my improove on the battery and cooling with Deck 2 but it will never be something like 7-8h gaming. Its just not possible to fit a battery like that in hand held. Even x86 gaming laptops cant pull it off.

I would definitely love to have a steam deck, however I've been waiting for it to basically meet its 8th generation version, right now it's still in the stages of 1.0 with updates, which is great I love watching how it's advances itself further, but I'm looking for more forward advancement, and I'm just waiting until the 8th generation version of the steam deck, because I want something more than just what it is currently, although I will admit it's really good especially for the price, but there's a few little hiccups here and there that I would personally hold over and it's operation in order for me to actually make and take the effort to actually get one.
It's obvious to everybody that the battery technology is still not quite there, but that's not necessarily steams fault, we need better batteries for everything, and the steam deck does really well with optimizing the games that we play in order to boost the graphics ordowngrade the graphics in order for the game to play longer and smoother, but because I want this to essentially replace my gaming tower PC, I want it to be just as good if not better than what I currently have.
And I believe with time and a lot of advancements of people that keep supporting these things, it will eventually get to that generation, because people love gaming and if they don't get to play the games they want to play the way they want to play them, that totally sucks and this is the first time in nearly three decades the PCS have been a thing, I guess maybe it's been four decades got the 80s through the 2023 era of gaming, but people of one of the game since the eighties on a portable device instead of just a PC.
But I realize this means that we have to wait for other technologies to improve like for example battery technology, and once battery technology improves enough, it should eventually get past those hurdles so that we can have a really good system, I mean it's good now, but I do expect a little bit more which I believe will happen as time goes on.

What made the Steam Deck so exciting was, as you said, I was looking into stuff from Aya Neo and GPD for a LONG time before the Steam Deck was even announced and I was super excited about mobile/handheld PC gaming but I couldn't stomach the price. When the Steam Deck was announced and given a price, I was overjoyed even without knowing it's actual performance levels I wanted it just for PC indie games and old titles. Little did I know I'd be playing God of War in the car waiting to pick my fiance up from work it's crazy. And for such an affordable price (compared to alternatives). The other things that excited me was the progress valve made with Linux support and adoption by using SteamOS (cause even if you prefer Windows, it's good if they have competition to push them to make better decisions for the customers), and the fact they could push handheld PC gaming into a more mainstream audience than before. Overall just a very exciting device and it's really the only way I play PC games now.

I just bought and I'm excited for it to come in. Yeah I have a gaming PC but it's in my 3rd floor office separated from the rest of my house so I can't socialize while wanting to play games on it. The steam deck portability is the perfect solution for me.
