    I remember sending away for Boba Fett & Anakin Skywalker. Those few months of waiting were agonizing. I think I walked outside twice a day looking a the mailbox for my figures. I think patience was one of the valuable lessons that I learned as a kid thanks to Kenner & Star Wars. Another great memory was looking through the Sears Christmas Wish Book & circling all of the great Star Wars & HeMan figures that we wanted so badly.

    I got the Emperor and the Survival Pack. I remember my parents talking about the IOU for the original figures, and then being surprised that what I really wanted was the cantina aliens - which were available to them first.

    I loved the mail aways, but their idea of "8-12 weeks" was usually closer to "6 -10 months". Or at least that is how it seemed to me when I checked my mailbox every day. My mailman thought I was stalking him. I remember the day I came home and found the Boba Fett in the mail on a Friday afternoon. My friend down the street didn't get his till Monday. That may have been the best weekend of my young life.

    Could you imagine, with today's corporate greed, how many proofs you'd have to send in to get a "free" figure? Probably have to send in 20 seals from $20 figures plus $10 "shipping, processing & handling fee". But of course they are too greedy to even do that, instead it "No way are we doing free anything".
    This could be just 1 more reason today's figures don't sell (along with a slew of other reasons), they don't make it fun or worthwhile to try to collect them all.

    • @figrindantatooine
      @figrindantatooine 5 лет назад +2

      Plus you get the variation figures like Revenge of the Sith Palpatine with a blue saber then the very same figure in the very same packaging with a red saber or the Clone Trooper Pilot in white gear and that same guy in black or Darth Maul from Ep1 w/gray vest or black vest yet packaged exactly the same then people keeping the toys carded/boxed just hoping the price goes up to sell in 10 years later? Collecting for the price and not collecting for fun has put an end to promotions like this kind. G.I.Joe had mail-in figures to. I collected both SW & Joe toys because it was fun and all my friends collected them to and we played with most but a few I put on my book shelf like the real hard to get toys because I knew they were hard to get and didnt want to break them or lose one. I didn't think about the price going up.

  • @figrindantatooine
    @figrindantatooine 5 лет назад +3

    The downside to the mail-in offers was you had to cut the proof of purchase off the packages and I liked to keep the packs and use them like big collector cards. Today, however, cutting up a carded figure package would be crazy because people focus on the value more than playing with the toys?

      Because he is..he is a Gand, an inspector species. I am sure you are well aware of the following info, but, His real name is Zuckus, but due to a mix up at kenner he was mislabeled with 4-LOM, I mistake that was not corrected till the 90s with the release of the power of the force 2 toy line. I even thought it was strange as a child being that 4-lom was a droid designation #, ie C-3PO, IG-88, R2D2, R5-D4, etc.

    I got about half the mail-aways as a kid. I'm glad you remembered the poster. I still have mine hanging up in my own junk room. I think you have some of these offers out of order though. I'm pretty sure the poster came before the coin and even before Anakin.
    1981 me agrees with you on the Display Arena. Not much bang for your buck there. I hoarded my POPs waiting but wouldn't spend them on that. However 2023 me just shelled out over $100 for one! 🙄
    My question is how many of the figures came with a little slip telling you about the character? I know Boba Fett, Bossk, Admiral Ackbar and Nien Nunb all do. Not sure about the others, even though the other 3 I got as mail aways back in the day. I think they just came with a catalog.
    Oh, and I still have a little box of POPs standing by for the next offer that never came.

    After the posing stand and Boba Fett (which I still have), I stopped the Star Wars mail-aways, and just waited until the figures were available in stores. Waiting for the mailman everyday was becoming nerve-wracking. Boba Fett took forever and a day to arrive, and my brother was very disappointed when he read the note from Kenner and noticed that Boba Fett didn't fire his missile. We knew about the Battlestar Galactica tragedy and understood why Kenner was being so cautious. I didn't care because I loved the figure, and my sister was too busy combing her 12" Princess Leia's hair to notice. Ah, the memories.

But i did get my Bossk fig! Wish i still had that apology letter! (Also did get my Akbar. And the Emperor and geezer Anakin.) But i got those metal Micro Collection ones, but they suuuuucked as a kid. What i ended up doing was digging a hole, flipping the yoda puppet upside down, and pretending it was a Sarlacc, and after the Micro Collection got boring, added toothpicks to the edge of upside down yodas cloak, used the reg figs for Carkoon action! Tentacles were moms crafting pipe cleaners. (Friends def impressed!)

      And what would you like me to say about him :) I did the history of the Boba figure video. But I might need to redo it. It’s old

    I got the Emperor this way. I may still have the box. I know I had it long after I got it.
