thanks for liking this build, please see some of my plywood build you might like it as well, keep in touch when you start working your foam kayak would love to answer all queries and please if you could subscribe to this channel that would be awesome, I will be starting my composite kayak soon
That's awesome! Question, just paint? No "poor man's fiberglass"? I'm thinking of doing one of these and almost all have it. Seems like a lot of would. I'd be good with skipping it😊
I'd be interested in how you attached and mounted the pedal drive. It's possible you may have shown that in a previous video and I just missed it. I just don't see the need to buy and Oldtown or Hobie for thousands of dollars when you can get relatively inexpensive pedal drive units from Amazon or Ebay and then either build your own kayak or adapt an aftermarket drive to a cheaper kayak like those sold at Cabelas. Just need to figure out how to mount them and make them readily removable for running in shallow water.
You can install anything, you just need to reinforce that portion you wanna attach your part like that pedal drive on this foam kayak i glued a piece of wood so i can secure them just before i lay fibre cloth and resin on it
Thanks, I just used PVA wood glue on this one. Check label when you buy should be suitable for foam bonding. Ye’ll out if you need anything I’d be happy to help..,
Great job bud!......but have an doubt, will not the expoxy resin melt the styrofoam (regular one) ? If not then can I use any type of resin that's available in the market?......... And the last question 😅, a coating of fiberglass enough (in terms of durability and waterproofing)??
Thanks man, you can only use epoxy resin on styrofoam, you also not to worry about waterproof styrofoam is already waterproof laying a fibreglass will make your boat hold its shape and making it stronger
@RokinDaCazbah that will still do just reinforce that whole deckwell erea with 6mm marine ply stick it to the foam before you glass where your seat located up to your footwell
Hey man i wanted fibreglass but got this stuff called fibreglass tissue, its like REAL thin fibreglass... do you think that will be good enough with polyester resin on cheap styrofoam
@@KustomDIY thats not the issue bro because you packaging tape over the foam first like when they make foam vietnamese fishing boats, thing is i ordered fibreglass and got 30gm tissue not 300gm mat and not sure if itll be strong enough
So its not strong enough to thin, use 225gsm or 300 gsm and use that 30gsm that you got for final layer that what it use for that will help smoothen the surface as well. You are not binding the foam and fibre glass in this process just imagine if you bump in, you will create a hollow portion on your boat and you only have very thin wall
Thanks man, I dont have templates for this one, really with foam you don’t need templates just know what size you want build it up and shape it to what you like, this one is 3600mm long, 920mm wide and 390mm deep
Haven’t tested that yet, I think its more than enough I am 75kg, the battery is 22kg, the motor is about 7kg and the water line still below to my deck line. I will try to do weight test on this one, i will let you know
I like your boat/kayak very much. Are you able to paddle it with the kayak paddle comfortably at the 880 width? I was really hoping you would finish the >VC seat as that is what I wanted to build for my kayak. What issues did you run into that made you change?
No problem at all with paddle, did you see my new kayak plywood thats 940 width and still easy to paddle. With the pvc seat I just thought its a bit weak thats why I change it, I can still make it work just reinforce that but it will just make it heavier
@@KustomDIY I'm preparing to make small styrofoam boat,so I tested wood glue.(small samples).Simple wood glue and Henkel wood glue-waterproof.Samples were in water whole night.(after drying).Result both samples were disappointing.
@@KustomDIY Thanx a stack! I'm aiming at doing exactly that size (35kg) - perhaps mount a solar panel (25kg) on a roof (extra 15kg) as well, battery (25kg), motor 10kg, accessories & kit approx 40kg's... So I'm probably looking at 150kg BEFORE I even get aboard! Any advice / warnings / cautions / do's & don'ts?
@@joatmofa0405That time when I did my float test me and my two older daughter was on that kayak with all that weight + 28kg agm battery and more/less 10kg motor we’re doing a round and still shes good so I reckon its not a big deal. What you can do as well to gain more on load displacement is increase the width of the boat by maybe 30/40mm also buy lithium battery 75% lighter than AGM

Thanks a lot, appreciated much., I didn’t took a drawing on this one. If you want I can give you some measurements and sketch on how I did it. I think working on this kind materials (foam) is easy you just need to shape it to what you like you don’t to worry if you make a mistake as you can always glue a new piece on it

wondering why the epoxy doesn't attack the foam? doesn't epoxy dissolve eps and extruded foams? Obviously in your build it doesn't! Just making plans to build a light weight rowboat from extruded foam boards, but was going to avoid the epoxy route, and use cloth and titebond ll glue but epoxy is much stronger.
You can use epoxy resin to xps or eps foam with no harm I think your talking about polyester resin thats the one that you can’t use in foam as it will attack/melt the foam
