The comedy works on so many levels. Using the wording "remainder of your life" about a boy, neglecting the fact that Bart was right for sheer manners, and believing putting him in an asylum is where he can be taught manners. Manners that are basically pointless as he is sentenced to spend the remainder of his life at the mad house anyway. Comedy gold.
That tree house of horror with Willie as Freddy Kruger was so well done I still remember the bagpipe spider from when I saw it as a kid. That episode was terrifying

*Fun fact:* if the Simpsons aged, Bart would be as old as Homer was when the series first started.
Simpsons first appeared in 1987, on Tracey Ullman. Canonically Bart is 10 and Homer and Marge graduated high school the same year, making them about the same age. Marge first gave her age as 34. If Bart was therefore born in 1977, he'd be 46 when I typed this, so he'd be older than Homer.

No it would have been 10 years ago! In '87 Bart is 10 Homer is 36 so Bart is born in '77 meaning he was prob 36 in 2013. Obviously there are many inconsistencies added since but I think its accepted Homer is 36 - a year younger than Cristiano Ronaldo now. Bart would be entering 47th year in 2024
The "St0p! he's already dead" meme ironically sums up how producers killd the show years ago but continue to beat the Simpsons decayed bloated corpse for every last nickel they can get outta it!

The Simpsons was an event in our household, mostly because we had to keep it secret from our parents, who hated it. Even as a kid I knew this was genius. And treehouse episodes were really special. Thanks for this.

The Simpsons is probably the best example of censorship slowly eroding all of the heart and soul out of a show. S1-8 are so good, rewatchable and funny as hell, that's pretty much where the series ends for me.
I don't think the decline after season 8 had anything to do with censorship. The show just kind of ran out of steam after a bunch of writers left.

'Homer vs The Devil' is a wonderful homage to the criminally underrated 1940s movie 'The Devil & Daniel Webster', one of my all-time favourite films.
Death Tome really is astonishing. They actually did something with the idea, instead of just "what if X popular thing, but with The Simpsons". Her motivations are original and fit her character, and they even went down a different route with the story. It's astonishing they actually had it in them.
Also, fun fact; This is the second time that The Simpsons has done a Death Note story. The first was in Bongo Comics, where Krusty played Ryuk, Lisa played L, and Bart played Kira.
The artist for the comic book one was originally a fan artist whose depiction of the Simpsons in anime style went viral. The creators were impressed enough with it they hired her to work on the comics. The Death Note segment was the only one she did in anime style, though.

This one sounds better. Bart being a cold-blooded murderer just doesn't sound like him, whereas as we saw here, Lisa could probably do it if she was able to justify her kills as being 'for the greater good'.
Worth noting that Mr. and Mrs. Smith was a comedy to begin with, creating a situation where the jokes in the movie are better than the ones in the Simpsons take.
Also we need more analysis videos examining classic Simpsons, people need to remember.

The car blowing up is also a joke about the myth that Gremlin cars exploded on impact which was really atributed to the Ford Pinto. Both cars released around the same time.

This was such a love letter to the old Halloween Specials. They were far more sophisticated than anyone gave them credit for, and still hold up to this day.

My favorite part of Terror At 5 1/2 Feet is where Bart goes out the window to fight the gremlin, and Skinner grabs him, then he gets Willie to help him.

I hate how a lot of the segments are basically parodies of movies, wether they’re horror or not. Though the installment with the babadook, death note and west world parodies is amazing.
There's another bit of brilliant symbolism in the ending of Simpsonsworld. When they show all the theme parks, all of the parks surrounding Simpsonsworld represent shows inspired or influenced by The Simpsons, but the one park not directly adjacent to Simpsonsworld, Spongebobworld, represents Spongebob, a show that arguably wasn't inspired by the Simpsons and yet has become just as popular.
They didn't need to go out of their way to pay a compliment to Spongebob, but they did.
Is not adjacent because it was on the water, as a nod to the show’s setting. That’s pretty much it.

Also, your argument about Spongebobworld being on the water doesn't hold up. The fact that Spongebobworld is on the water doesn't prevent it from being adjacent to Simpsonsworld. The artists could have placed Spongebobworld between Simpsonsworld and the water, but they chose not to.

That Kim Basinger episode is exactly where I told my kids to stop watching. I have a couple select episodes in the brief span after it that I will occasionally allow us to visit. But generally that's where it all ended for me.
Finally someone gives "Mr. and Mrs. Simpson" the critical smackdown it deserves. Not just for having nothing to do with Halloween, not just for being a segment long parody of a movie so forgettable that most people probably only remember it BECAUSE they parodied it on the Simpsons, but because once again, they don't even try to make Marge and Homer act in character, outside of lazy throaway jokes. They don't go "Well, what if Marge was a hitwoman", they go "what if this hitwoman looked like and had some surface level similarities to Marge".
I think The Simpsons jumped the shark when they started bringing on big name celebrities. For me, it lost its original charm. I don't remember specifically when this was but I do remember an episode with Tony Blair and thinking to myself at the time 'I'm bored' then going outside
I remember that episode. The Tony Blair and JK Rowling cameos each had a solid joke, but the actual storyline is tiresome.
The change wasn't that they brought on big celebrities, they'd been doing that since the classic years (Barry White, Leonard Nimoy, James Woods, George Harrison, etc.) Like Despot said, they started _worshipping_ celebs. Instead of making a character or a joke for them, the joke became "hey everyone! It's (INSERT TOPICAL ACTOR/POP CULTURE FIGURE HERE)!", and never anything beyond that.
Not really holloween related but its sad they took away Apu. I loved his catch phrase "Thank you come again" He was my favorite when i was a kid. He was a great father, worker and character.😢.
That was the perfect opportunity for an adult in the room to say 'No!', instead, they bent the knee and gave in to absurd, illogical arguments of racialist scum.

I've heard plenty of Indian immigrants who loved Apu. Sure some of the stereotypes were exaggerated but there was nothing about his character that was offensive or racist. I just wish we could go back to the 90s when we weren't so sensitive about everything!
In writing out Apu, they also wrote out his wife, their kids, his brother, his brother's wife, his brother's kids... and replaced them with... nothing. They basically committed genocide against all Indian characters in the show.
Diversity and representation is when you delete characters based on their ethnicity.

The Simpsons was one of the only shows we all sat down to watch as a family. A lot of nostalgia there. 90s was peak tv in general. Its exciting to see they're trying to pull themselves back out of the doldrums. Would be sad to see it cancelled after so long.

I agree with a lot of what you said, but holy shit that spiel about the dream opening of Terror at 5 1/2 feet and the rest of the segment was the shakiest iffiest shit I've ever heard. You wouldn't see a bigger stretch at a warmup for an ollympic mile footrace.

This was brilliant. The tree house of horror episode was the last thing I gave up watching, but that happened about season Thirteen or Fourteen. For nearly a decade, it was the best thing on T.V. It's continued existence as a zombie causes a little pain whenever I think about it.

Nice summation. I was about 30 when the Simpsons first popped up on the Tracy Ulman show, and I was a regular watcher for almost 10 years. But as the 90’s Drew to a close they definitely changed for the worst. It’s been over 20 years since I’ve seen a show. This particular segment looks interesting, but I won’t hold my breath in hopes of a turnaround. Thanks for risking it for us!
I am absolutely stunned to see a parody of a Japanese anime by a modern-day American animation studio that genuinely tries to honor the original source material instead of just weakly prodding at those "weird asians and their big-eyed cartoons." Especially one of the greatest stories ever made, Death Note. I'll definitely have to give the episode a watch.
My favorite episode is the spoof of The Twilight Zone episode about the little boy (In this case Bart Simpson) who can literally make anything happen simply by thinking about it holding all of the adults hostage, forcing them to think happy thoughts ALL the time, otherwise suffer the consequences.

Treehouse of Horror was once great. The Homega Man wae among the best. It was still funny for me, and I looked forward to every episode, until probably 2002. The 90s Simpsons was absolute gold.

Man, that first "Treehouse of Horror"! Me and my sister, sitting at home while Mom was out, expecting to see another episode of the goofy yet heartwarming new show on Fox, and along comes a descent into animated macabre. It was wonderful! One of the most special TV moments I've experienced.
The Treehouse of Horror episodes were kind of a way for the writers and animators to let loose and have fun with dipping their toes into a flexible reality multiverse, before returning to business as usual. The reason Terror at 5 1/2 feet works is it's a satire of a remake of a remake (the gremlin also bears a passing resemblance to Homer) the Mr. & Mrs Smith adaptation doesn't work because aside from it being a reference to a time when "Bradgelina" was a thing, it has nothing to do with the horror genre. While the Simpsons has improved a little since the Disney acquisition of Fox it's still a show very much on its last legs.
Everything you said about old fallen heroes being justly punished even with the last-minute change of heart is a very good point. It further illustrates that modern writer's and audiences' sense of morality is confused.
It's why I hate being a Star Wars fan, including the more decent circles. They pretend Anakin was always in the right, somehow. And the revisionist sh*t that is Clone Wars 2008 has reinforced the idea that he was such a good man.🙄

As a life long Simpsons fan - it kills me to see the decaying unfunny corpse that the show has become - its unfunny and boring. Characters have been desecrated and eviscerated, story lines "woke," unoriginal and lame (starting to think that Kathleen Kennedy - the scourge of arts & entertainment - is also secretly involved with the Simpsons). Lastly, if there is one more woke Lisa-centric episode (the least funny and likeable character on the show), I'm going to puke.
The Nightmare at 20,000 feet might not be that obscure at the time. You didn't mention the remake of the episode done as one of the parts of Twilight Zone: The Movie with John Lithgow in a much much more memorable performance of the William Shatner character role. That was 1983, this Treehouse of Terror was 1993, ten years later, definitely not a far fetch that the creators of this episode were younger / teens at the time of TZ: The Movie.

@@JeffreyAllanBackowski yeah the movie version is far superior, even down to the 'Gremlin' on the wing of the plane. It definitely felt more memorable, and as far as 'obscure', even Dragon Ball Z has a scene in the Cell saga directly homaging the movie version, with imperfect Cell standing on the plane of a wing with Krillin's head stuck through a window, proceeding to put his foot on Krillin's face and do the waving of the his finger.

Ugh now I no why I never watched it, Shatner was just awful in it, everyone's acting, the dumb broad that kept falling asleep and not seeing the gremlin "Oh, I took a sleeping pill", I'd slap her "B*tch, stay awake you druggie *hore, stay awake, look at the f*cking gremlin, look!". I’m 22 years old right now and consider the Simpson a in my life I have even wait I any of it when I was 15
So considering the series as a whole and the Halloween episodes I don’t have that much passion for it

To add this note about terror at 5 and a half feet. It’s actually parodies 2 Twilight Zone episodes. The whole dream sequence where Bart predicts his demise is similar to the episode “Twenty-two”. Though the Simpsons way of parodying it was a bit more straightforward unlike TZ’s method to build up the character’s dreams that lead to the twist. Also, both the episode and “Terror at 20,000 feet” both involve airplane accidents. The latter being averted from becoming one and the former in which the character preventing her death by not entering the doomed plane.
In a way, terror at 5 and a half feet kind of blends them together with Bart preventing his death (on the bus) by stoping the gremlin in the matter Shatner did in 20,000 feet. I love it when the simpsons parodies Twilight Zone & this is one of the best out of them.
You don't mention The Twilight Zone movie with the Terror at ...with John Lithgow. Fans of The Simpsons, especially the season featuring this magic Treehouse segment would be a lot more familiar with, much more I think than the original TZ episode with Shatner. The memory of the movie, being screened on TV and home video enabled a lot more appreciation for the great references in the Treehouse episode. I stopped watching,,and haven't watched the Simpsons, since about season 14...and I watched the premiere of the first episode in the late 80s and used to watch the little segments on the Tracey Ullman show too. As Grandpa Simpson once said..." For shame !!!!!" Great video by the way...I've become quite a fan of your videos.

i think the gremlin exploding relates to the design flaw in the amc vehicle.
Early Simpsons jokes were very multilayered, that was obviously part of the joke.

Sadly, I worry the writers of the death note parody didn’t realize understand what they wrote, as parody often escapes those engaged in intense cognitive dissonance. Look at the Russo’s and the messaging of Winter Soldier.
I would highly recommend Season 27’s Halloween of Horror. It’s the only episode of the Simpsons to be canonically set on Halloween rather than being a Treehouse of Horror episode.
It wonderfully jabs at holiday pop up stores, safe spaces, and adult behaviours during the festivities. I never really minded the Mr and Mrs Simpson segment- I did briefly wonder- why is that a Halloween episode but that soon past and I moved on, i guess its because I didn't really mind the movie all that much either- I didn't love it as in it was one of best movies ever but I didn't hate it either... I was pretty neutral but after watching this- i feel forced to contemplate my views and my life's choices... Dammit Despot- You made me think... and think hard...
