Derek, if you shorten up your dual soldering iron knife the irons should heat the knife more efficiently because they are not trying to also heat all the excess metal hanging off of each end/side. Install heat-proof Phenolic handles instead. Great idea and you should patent it!
The spatula method combined with a heat lamp positioned above the fretboard is the method that has always worked best for me. Yes, I have to reheat the spatula like you did.
Wow. I’ve been doing “hobbiest” level luthier work for 20 year, but nothing like that. I’m fascinated at the decisions you have to make when performing a such a major repair/renovation. Great job!
I do repairing smartphones. There is a techniue to get underneath a glass back cap, using air heater and thin guitar picks. Maybe it would be helpful in fretboard work too?
Man. I haven't seen a short tenon with the fretboard removed before... I'd love to see some closeups if you can swing it. If not, no worries... That thing went 10 rounds with you!!! I love following these repairs.
Derek, I need to replace a broken truss rod on an old beater guitar. The fretboard has binding. Do I need to remove the binding first or is it possible to get the fretboard and binding off in one piece?
Have you ever considered removing the neck to do a repair like this? Is it possible to replace the neck and unglue the scarf joint to salvage the headstock?
I have no idea how you'll fix that but I'll keep watching Is taking the fretboard off always that messy? I was thinking about taking of fretboards out of one or two guitars of mine to install the truss rods but I'm not sure if it's possible to reuse them
Sometimes I watch these and think "I might be able to do that", then when you see them fight you like this I realise I'd have lost my sh1t and cried it out.
There You go D, nice job....you are the man I'm learning alot. I really do like your style man, hey by the way I need a Telecaster and Les Paul template where can I get one for cheap or free on a serious budget bit, I can't live without a guitar.
I the fingerboard is going to sacrificed, pull the frets and plane the sucker off. Get to about 1/32 with the plane and then sand the rest off. Easy- peasy...
Sorry but why didn't you just chisel and mallet or plane that bastard off in slices and/or chunks if you're not keeping it? Pry the frets and chisel the inlays out before, obviously.

A leveling beam, my wife’s iron, and a thin machete have never failed me. Never more than 20 mins.

The 25/50 les paul is one of my favorites of all time and it hurt when I saw what happened to it

Would there ever be a case to be made for removing the frets and using a plane of some sort to "shave" off the fretboard down to the neck?
I have done that before
🔥FREBOARD!!🔥
