I fully agree, I'm always saying "it's not a bike it's a BMX".. and I always get strange looks when I leave it somewhere parked upside down 😂😂😂. I'm 53 years old and still riding 🤙
glad you put this together. It's good to know where other people are coming from and that you're not crazy when they don't understand you. I remember us being run out of 'bike' shops in the 90's cause they didn't want to deal with 'BMXers'. The 'speak your language' comment was great to put it in perspective.... Go see your people :)
I consider myself lucky to have a Bmx shop that’s Bmx only and I’m proud to say he’ll be around for a long time , and if the day comes he does close his shop he’s my friend now for many years and I’ll always be able to get my parts service and a darn good bullshit about nothing but bmx … long live rock bay Bmx and every Bmx shop , Bmx cannot die it just morphs and multiplies lol 😊
it's cool that you mentioned Empire BMX. I grew up here in Austin,TX. I 'm 57 years old and roll a Sunday Model C with Odyssey everthing on it ,and your right about the types of shops and bicycles that they cater to.I have a Ruffcycles stretch cruiser and a Octane dirt jumper, all bicycles but they are used for different reasons.Nobody sells stretch cruisers in ATX.
completely right about bmx being an entirely different world. i grew up riding bmx but there isn't enough bmxers local to me to support a shop, so in my shop I service all kinds of bikes. As i can't know everything, a good portion of my job is researching and learning about all these ever-changing technologies with the road and mtb's. every time i get a bmx bike in for repairs its like easy mode lol been working with mtb and road for 4 years and still barely understand all the makes and models of shimano derailleurs and shifters, let alone all the other brands which may or may not be compatible also i put odi grips on every bike that needs grips so even if they have no idea they get a taste of bmx
Agreed! I have been to most all the "bike shops" in Tampa Bay/Sarasota and J&R in Largo, FL is the best around and is a totally different business than a normal bike shop. Highly recommend J&R iif local in FL. J/S. Love the video!!! Thank you and I hope to see your shop one day.
I used to work at LBFG/Citygrounds In Long Beach, and man the amount of customers i had to mansplain that we were a fixed gear shop that also services mildly to road bikes but we’re not a bicycle shop. Got told endless times i was an ass and unprofessional because we would deny service to any bike that didn’t take 700c tubes.. so thank you for clarifying this to your viewers.. that’s like bringing your lifted pavement queen truck to a performance shop that service only sports cars smh
I went to my local BMX shop, asked for a 20" wheel set, he led me to the very back room, dug in a box to find the dustiest chrome 1990's wheels I have ever seen. Then he said something along the lines of "BMX hmmm brave." In a pretty condescending tone. That being said he saved a rim for me that was on the cusp of folding up on itself back to almost perfectly straight for $10. I still go to him for my maintenance
You are right. We are a bicycle shop and BMX shop. We have people drive for over an hour just to come here for there BMX parts because the other shops in there town don't understand "BMX". It's a whole different Animal. Some people may see us as a Cult or think we like a little S&M. But We the People demand good Profle parts for our BMX bikes! Well this turned silly I'm going to ride my bike now.👍
I've never seen a dedicated bmx shop before. luckily my local bike shop is cool with dealing with bmx stuff but they usually have to order it from the distributor if it's anything other than grips or pedals
Sadly, the last “bmx” shop around my way closed about 20 years ago, by that time though half their inventory was turning into Treks 😢. Online only shopping for me lol
Depends on the knowledge of the techs. If you knowledge is board and wide then you can call yourself a shop for All or if your limited and you only know mostly BMX then BMX. Just depends on knowledge and experience. You may have a master tech employed who knows it all. Just like a car dealership who may have 2 master techs that take care of not only whatever car they specialize in but also all the used cars they take trades on. I love the content! The episode about grinding pegs with “Damn kids” cracked me up. I guess b/c I’m 46 yrs old.
I think my dude at my local did my Alex supra g 48 h with 4 cross spoke pattern I wanted 3 cross but he did it one better , wheelsets are the only parts on my condor I refuse to mess with , they all go to my local shop , one summer I blew up two seventies cassettes he had to rebuild my rear 3 times , then I had him do them again cause I got a xs4x4 v-2 front hub and an odyssey v-3 cassette. That wheelset is still rolling true fro 3 years now 😊
A completely agree with Phu BMX is it’s own style for certain riding purposes (Free style)Well put Phu! It would be awesome to see more videos weekly if possible. Love what these guys content!😎
I once had a bike tech ask me "how da faq do you guys work on your bikes. Nothing is torqued, tensions or aline at all" I laughed and told him "we just do".
I walked into a local bicycle shop and they said they were a full service shop. A few weeks later I brought a set of rims in to be laced and they said they had to ship them out to be done. I shook my head and walked out of that “full service bicycle shop”.
My town is mainly a mountain biking town so there's a lot of mountain bike shops with only 2 stores that sell BMX's but they all lack BMX parts or knowledge so I relied on this channel and ordering from source bmx
Most bike shops look at you funny when you bring in a BMX bike. I don't know if it's elitism but from my experience, they kind of look down on you. I have been lucky to find a couple shops that know BMX because the mechanics are BMX dudes. One of those bike shops sponsor my BMX Race team. Shout out to Lodi Cyclery! In any case, having dedicated BMX shops at a local level is rare and I am thankful that y'all still exist, and thankful that some regular bike shops are still supporting the BMX culture.
General LBS is like a mechanic who works on anything, but has areas of speciality. BMX has one area of specialization. All bugs are insects, but the opposite is not true. Same, BMX shop is a bike ship, but not all bike shops are BMX.
BMX = Bicycle Motocross ...... BMX began during the early 1970s in the United States when children began racing their bicycles on dirt tracks in southern California,...... hehe I was Born in 72.... Vu 1969 ? LMAO hahahaha Love you Guys
In other words, boys and girls, if you drive a Honda, don't take it to the Ferrari dealer for service I learned the difference between shops back in the 80s because I had different types of bikes and constantly was getting something for one or the other.
I like here In Raleigh NC, and while I'm glad for our few skate shops, there's only one real BMX Shop. Downtown Bmx and All Out Bikes. One focuses on OS (AO) The other on everything (Downtown). Downtown Is 2hrs away, so have to keep explaining to bike shop workers used to fixies what exactly they need to fix
We lost our local BMX shop 15 years ago when a sports store chain moved to town. The local skateshops followed about 5 years after that. I have tried dealing with them, but it is annoying. So now I am forced to support rider owned online shops.
Meh. Even the “BMX shops” look at me weird. Lol. Because I’m 100% old school BMX…..56 years old, and most of my BMX bikes are from the early to mid ‘80s. They look at me, and treat me like the irrelevant “old man”…..although I AM an old man. 😆 Anyway, if it weren’t for guys like ME, there wouldn’t be a “BMX”. that’s why I stick to online shopping these days. Less frustration, less cold shoulder, and I get exactly what I want in the end, for the right price. WE’RE STILL OUT HERE. WE HAVE MONEY. And WE RIDE. 🤘🏼😈🤘🏼
It's all different and all the same. Well all bike BMX, Down Hill , Rode, cruiser,, ect Bikes. All used the way we want to Ride. Yes A BMXSHOP is not a Bicycle Shop / English.
Master Phu keeping the BMX culture alive like a mad scientist in the lab
he's my siPHU 😁 (Mandarin for master, and yes I know, he's Vietnamese).
epic bmx holding it down
Yes sir, shout-out to Kings Ride shop in Cathedral City, CA! My local shop
I fully agree, I'm always saying "it's not a bike it's a BMX".. and I always get strange looks when I leave it somewhere parked upside down 😂😂😂. I'm 53 years old and still riding 🤙
Its so cool you have the support where you live. Couldn't pull it off in many places.
I love specialized bike shops because they have everything for that specific genre of riding.
glad you put this together. It's good to know where other people are coming from and that you're not crazy when they don't understand you. 🙌🏻🙌🏻
We like to hear you rant Phu ! You don't go to the Dodge dealer to get your Ford fixed!
Hell yea Phu BMX are a dying breed don’t ever close the doors
I consider myself lucky to have a Bmx shop that’s Bmx only and I’m proud to say he’ll be around for a long time , and if the day comes he does close his shop he’s my friend now for many years and I’ll always be able to get my parts service and a darn good bullshit about nothing but bmx … long live rock bay Bmx and every Bmx shop , Bmx cannot die it just morphs and multiplies lol 😊
alot of normal bike shops were so perplexed when I used to bring in fixed gears lol I totally understand
I wish i lived near you guys.. I would be in your store often...
👊🏻👊🏻
We only have bicycle shop in New-Brunswick Canada and I went to one bmx shop and u can tell it’s 2 different world

That's what Trek does. Buys up mom and pop shops then turns them into Trek stores. Sad.
Sucks to hear
I feel you 110 percent!!
New how to true a bmx wheel at home vid!!

Spitting facts
👊🏻👊🏻
I've always laughed at how a bicycle shop calls parts "components" while a BMX store simply calls them parts.
Elitism...
they're so smug lol
I walked into a local bicycle shop and they said they were a full service shop. A few weeks later I brought a set of rims in to be laced and they said they had to ship them out to be done. I shook my head and walked out of that “full service bicycle shop”.
Hahaha “my ass” is what I would’ve said as well

Love this!
👊🏻👊🏻
(02:55) hey, I'm currently riding a 21 speed Shimano.
Huge difference
I'm a fat balding 54 year old white dude and I think you are awesome! Radical dude! 😂
Ultra nice explaination.... headshots!
Once I learned about the Secret it made getting parts and work much easier.
A bicycle is a bicycle. But not all bicyles are created equal 😆
General LBS is like a mechanic who works on anything, but has areas of speciality. BMX has one area of specialization. All bugs are insects, but the opposite is not true. Same, BMX shop is a bike ship, but not all bike shops are BMX.
Ponyboy Phu…stay golden
🫶🏻😂
Do you guys have an online store? Sadly I don't have a bmx shop near by and the shop that is local has no interest in dealing with bmx stuff.
Just phone orders
Bikelife!!!! #bmx4thewin
Where are you guys located?.
Do you guys sell parts online?
BMX = Bicycle Motocross ...... BMX began during the early 1970s in the United States when children began racing their bicycles on dirt tracks in southern California,...... hehe I was Born in 72.... Vu 1969 ? LMAO hahahaha Love you Guys
I run 35 psi
Somehow we need to detect phone calls that are not BMX calls hahahaha
True 😂
Never the garbage bikes they sell on Amazon and Fleabay.. yes and understanding a bike shop and its structure
Exactly
Big difference between shops
In other words, boys and girls, if you drive a Honda, don't take it to the Ferrari dealer for service
I learned the difference between shops back in the 80s because I had different types of bikes and constantly was getting something for one or the other.
Is epic up? And if so do they ship internationally?
Epic is open, but you’d have to DM them on Instagram to see if they’ll ship to you
@@AlfredoMancuso thanks! Every time I go on the website it days it's down
These must be gen z people bringing a Bmx bike to a regular store
But what if I want a bmx race bike?
Best
Easy bmx shop is specific shop for bmx no mountain bikes or other style of bikes
I like here In Raleigh NC, and while I'm glad for our few skate shops, there's only one real BMX Shop. Downtown Bmx and All Out Bikes. One focuses on OS (AO) The other on everything (Downtown). Dude! Thanks for the shout out.👍
important video

Mountain bike shop in England will not touch a bmx and tell you to go to a bmx shop they don’t stock bmx parts 🚲💨
I get my parts at - Walmart LOL
Meh. Even the “BMX shops” look at me weird. Lol. Because I’m 100% old school BMX…..56 years old, and most of my BMX bikes are from the early to mid ‘80s. I called a bike store if they had a 22in tube and could hear the confusion in his voice
but are they finished?
👌🏾
Just like when i went to a mtn bike shop with my bmx and they couldnt help me because they specialized in mtn bikes not bmx.

BMX, Down Hill , Rode, cruiser,, ect Bikes. All used the way we want to Ride. Yes A BMXSHOP is not a Bicycle Shop / English.
🙌🏻
most bike shops act elitist if you come in with zero knowledge, including this one.
