It’s My head canon that alongside the mainline MGS timeline, there exists this Commando, GI Joe, A- Team 80s beef sandwich of a timeline that’s surmised of the NES Metal Gear Games and their supplementary material.
Probably the best coverage of the NES games I've seen. I've typically only seen people dismiss them outright because the "proper" versions were the MSX2 games, but it's good to see them covered earnestly.
Well they arent wrong about the msx version. However the nes stuff is just another thing entirely. It's like everyone having their own version of batman or something with different people just changing things
ironically 90% of people who talk about the "proper" versions are actually talking about the ports for java phones that run at 15fps and have a bunch of changes
Looking at the MGS universe I could see this be a weird take on Snake's adventures released to the public by the Patriots. Hollywood Macho Man Snake basically being a twisted funhouse mirror version of Snake and about his legendary exploits.
I loved this game as a kid, still do. Some of the stuff it did was pretty impressive for it's time - learning that multiple Metal Gears are on the ship, blowing the ship up by detonating the munitions dump, and hightailing out of there before the ship goes down is probably the first gaming "set-piece" I ever experienced, and boy was it a good one. I liked that you even had to launch a flare to see the room with the Metal Gears - that's a nice touch, making you feel very unsafe and uncertain when the game decides to throw the "big reveal" at you. It's a sequence that wouldn't be out of place in a great action-adventure today, and back then they didn't have the luxury of decades of game design to build on. It ain't perfect but Snake's Revenge is a darn good NES adventure, for sure.
I can't understate how great this channel is. Trav is like a more laid back, casual Civvie 11 with a wider range of games covered and a similar dedication to great line delivery. Very easy sub from me!
15:59 funny thing about that ludicrous name for a villain, "Higharolla Kockamamie"... considering the time when the game was made, it's a reference/parody to Ayatollah Khomeini, who was relevant during the Gulf War until his death in 1989... It kinda reminds me when the cartoon show Animaniacs parodied Saddam Hussein by naming him "Sodarn Insane"
i think the lack of konami's special chip came from the fact that nintendo of america worked differently from ninyendo of japan, they didnt allow 3rd parties to use custom chips, so since metal gear was supposed to appear to western audiences they had to design it with western specs in mind... doesnt explain why they went with something weaker than whag they used for Contra tho
That is exactly why, EXCEPT it was Nintendo period, full stop. Nintendo of America didn't make decisions on their own. I don't know why so many people think that because a company opens a office in another country somehow means that they're doing things independently....They don't, they're not their own thing and everything has to be approved by the main company....Nintendo of America isn't telling Nintendo of Japan what they're going to do or what "new" policies are going to be implemented. Same thing applies to Sony Japan and Sony US or Sony EU.. You had to use Nintendo approved cart specifications for every game as some sort of "quality control"...Same with the publishers could only publish 5 games a year max, leading to all the publishers starting off shoot companies like Konami starting up Ultra Games....
Oh God, I've tried to play Snake's Revenge and gave up after the train section because the absurd amount of trial and error, mixed with unnecessary back tracking made feel I was wasting my time Edit: There's also the 2D sections, those are trash
Snake’s Revenge was my 1st Metal Gear. While it’s the shadows of the series I loved this game and played it over and over and was prepared for the Solid Series well before new comers at the time.
Dude, Konami’s 8-bit OSTs were the peak of chiptune music, those composers really knew how to get the most out of such limited hardware. Even their licensed games like Batman had killer tunes.
Just listening to the OST is much more fun that actually playing it. IIRC, to get transceiver to work you have to ping the map. If there's a spot nearby it'll appear on a square. You move that many screens over to the spot, and then use it. It's been over 30 years, but I think that's how it works.
Just one minor correction. The MSX2 version of Metal Gear was first released in the West, in Europe, in 1987, a few months after its Japanese release. It wasn't released in North America didn't come until the 1988 NES release though.
Can't wait until 2024 when Trav covers MGSV: The Phantom Pain, I love that game so much but god it's going to take a while to get there XD Not a knock on Trav btw, jsut a sad realization
Snakes Revenge is a superior game to the first NES metal gear game. I genuinely enjoy it as an action game for the NES . As a “Metal Gear” game it’s just ok at best, but a lot of the elements in it led to greater things in the official series.
I want to see an 8-bit Metal Gear collection in the vein of the the Castlevania and Contra collections that contains both MSX2 games, the NES/Famicom version of MG1, Snake's Revenge, and Ghost Babel
this game was my first metal gear and honestly out of all the classic metal gear games from that time up until mgs on the psx was my favorite. i will admit the music was what got me hooked the most.
Snake’s Revenge and Metal Gear (NES) are two of my favorite games of all time. I truly enjoyed them growing up, and now my kids love this game and enjoy everything about them, even the flaws. I hope that the my bring these games into modern light along with Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.
3:46 - Ah, it's always nice to hear little trivia tidbits like that, I always wondered why they made you blow up a stationary background object that didn't attack you directly. I mean, the Supercomputer fight on the NES was pretty lame too, but at least there wasn't that idiot pattern-with-a-missing-step bullshit to deal with.
This game is the definitive Metal Gear experience. Faster loading, faster gameplay, much better in-game text that you can actually comprehend, good graphics, excellent music and solid gameplay. Who cares if the story isn't canon? The game is a blast to play!
Well, maybe he knows something we don’t. Intel from a CIA spook destabilizing the North Pole? I‘d rather Santa was real, than those Ape Escape monkazoids.
I was surprised you didn't mention that Metal Gear 2 apparently has a unique Game Over screen should you fail to destroy it in time. Either that or I'm thinking Peace Walker, but I think I read somewhere about this game having a unique fail screen.
Funny cause the metal gear stuff was inspired and influenced by action movies including escape.from New York and la. Main guy says call me snake. Which is played by kurt russel

So the NES port of the first game has one notable design improvement over the MSX game, you must defeat the bosses to progress, the keycards are now dropped by them instead of just sitting around for you to pick up and then skip the boss. Those corrupted graphics you saw riding the weird elevator up while escaping the boat are normal. It'd be clipped out of view if you played on a CRT screen by the TV's bezel. Many games display garbage in parts of the screen that'd normally be cut off on a CRT TV. Emulators usually have a setting to hide it too.
For some reason this didn’t appear in my subscription feed? I just randomly decided to watch some of your vids and saw that you just released a vid. Judging by the amount of likes, I have a feeling I’m not the only one.
Also most of my subscriber base isn't here for obscure metal gear spinoffs. But that's ok, I'm just making sure I cover the series carefully until I get to MGS1 or any other game in the series that will do better in the algos
Snake's revenge is still a game I love to this day, because, while, yes, it's clunky as heck, you can't take it at fault for his originality. It tried so much stuff, and so much of this stuff is really cool. I'd love to see a team make an enhanced version of this, just by sheer curiosity.
@@propheinx2250 i wouldn't know for I still haven't arrived there in the saga to be honest. Right now I'm just starting metal gear solid 3, so revengeance is not for today

It's surprising to see how much Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance took inspiration from Snake's Revenge.... it's even in the name!

I’ve always said the three other guys that parachute down are Bill and Lance from Contra, and the Rush’n Attack guy. They went off to their own games.
The thought of them all passing a twenty to the pilot for the ride before they jump out brings me great joy.
