There's so much chemistry between them. I love this scene because she comes up behind the piano and mickey comes and taps her on the head. It wasnt hollywood that brought them together. It was their Love that they had for each other that brought them together.

I don't know the actor (I should though), but I do know that I agree with everyone here about how their chemistry just flows on the screen. They were convincing enough to make his mom stick out like a sore thumb. Makes me want to watch all of it!

Anne, it is interesting you mentioned the mother figure being so much older than Judy. MGM had a reputation for trying to keep a female star as young as they could for as long as they could. Judy used to complain they would not let her grow up. I'm not sure if she ever thought about some of the actresses playing ingenues were in their 40s (they tried to stay looking young). Now Mary Astor did play Judy's mom in Listen Darling, and after this film in Meet me in St. Louis, but I suspect since Judy and Mickey were the rebellous "swing kids" singing out loud the newer sounds, that the alcoholic director Berkely via of the Mr. Mayer to appease the head office, wanted older matronly mothers (as well as older fathers) to appeal to the morality of the times coming out of the Great depression, as to not lose part of their movie going audience.

  • @cellarcoat

I know you commented a year ago, but I'll respond anyway. Women did age faster then. Maybe you've seen Judy on TJGS looking 65 plus as she tells the audience, "I have a little girl who's 11 and a little boy who's 8..." It's true Judy aged quickly, but many of her peers who are still living today already looked like grandmothers when only mothers. "And we'll soon be old..." as The Harvey Girls sing when dreaming about their future husbands. TJGS is only 18 years later...

Bizarre question I would like to throw out there. I am all for musical escapism that's based in some form of reality. I have seen this scene and the movie numerous times, and get so caught up in Judy and Mickey together, I am now noticing(after spending most of the day doing rewrites of a screenplay) Who in their right mind during their High School days would visit their HS principal at his home. Unless Mickeys' family and the principals family were close neighbors (but I don't get that sense from Mickey). I don't understand, why the writers did have Mickey and Judy waiting for him outside his office for a meeting during school hours. This not only sounds logical, but would give Mickey another opportunity to do an impression style comedy routine with Judy laughing. Simply a thought.

For the long haul of her varied career (movies, stage, records, TV, radio, Vegas) Judy Garland is/was more lastingly famous than Shirley Temple, who could not transition to an adult career, and she was certainly in the same stratosphere as Elizabeth Taylor. All three of them were superstars in their own different way-larger than life personas like Elvis Presley, Brando, Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and a few others.

Why not make sure that you are truly saved by Jesus Christ and practice this way. Remorsefully confess with your heart your sins to Jesus Christ who is God and tell Him that you right now are repenting of your sins and you want to be born again of the Spirit from above. Tell Jesus that you are remorsefully sorry for breaking His commandments and that you are begging for forgiveness from Him. Allow His blood from the cross to wash away your sins. After this is done with your heart successfully the Holy Spirit will come to live within you and He will rebuild you from the inside out.
Look for signs that you are saved. Things like spreading the good news from Jesus, getting other people saved, a craving for the word of God, reading the Bible, etc… These things are known as a calling and fruit bearing. If you're not bearing fruit then keep doing it. Sometimes it takes time to get saved. Read Matthew chapter 13 from the King James Bible. God bless!!!!
