Nothing really. I turn mostly green wood. You can season it if you like but you’ll find most of it cracks beyond use. You can twice turn something too which is to turn it into a think version if the finished piece then leave it for 6-12 months and then turn it again once dry. I prefer green turning.
Black locust!! I just cut one down that was dead for a long time, nd it has holes form carpenter ants just like yours. Gorgeous wood! Glows under black light! But this ain't your first rodeo, is it? I do turning but you are in a class 4 or 5 yards past me! You are up there near Richard Raffan!
Thanks Seth . Thank you for watching. It’s a piece of sumac but it is as you say fairly similar, I’m not sure who Richard raffen is but I’m sure it’s a compliment.
Nice work, Did you think that the shape would have looked great reversed, top bottom and bottom top. Just a thought, remove flange and have narrow base.
Why change another mans work. Sounds like you dont like it . Why dont you do one and show the world how good you are ? Harry. Ps: I think that wood is Acacia. I have plenty you can have a seasoned piece if you pay just the postage. I am in UK.
I didn’t say I didn’t like it. Don’t get so defensive just because I offered my opinion. I’d love some acacia from uk but postage to australia is prohibitive plus it wouldn’t get through biosecurity. I only have a small amount of acacia. A lot of wattles in australia are not suitable for turning. Thanks
@@RedKiteWoodturning nice to read it here. I thought something like that the moment I saw it. Just didn't know the word in english. The tree/shrub I mean is called "Essigbaum" in German, word by word it'd mean vinegar tree and it's in the aumac genus, but I don't kniw if sumac in English just means this specific wood or the whole genus.
It was reversed on a jam chuck and turned away. Bit of a boring process to include in the videos but I can leave it in on the next video if they like 👍🏻
I love the way a log is gradually turned into a work of art. Beautiful!
Thanks. It’s a fainting process to watch. ☺️👍🏻
Love the grain lines that show up so well when varnished. Beautiful piece!
Lovely! The grain on this is really cool.
That has to be the most beautiful piece if wood ever.
Ha, yeah it’s pretty lovely isn’t it
Black locust
Great design! Very nice!
Good job
Thanks buddy
the bark would suggest locust. if it smells like fresh popcorn when its milled id say that. fun to turn, has all kinds of color too, reds and pinks.
Thanks mate, this log was Sumac, an unusual wood to find here in the uk but easy to identify from the distinctive growth rings 👍🏻
That would look lovely with some dried flowers in it. 💐💐💐💐
Or some dried poppy heads.
That’s a lovely idea
Красота!😊
Thanks
Gorgeous 😮
That project turn out great 👍
Thanks you
Looks like pine. Nice work.
This was a piece of sumac
beautiful and inspiring idea
Honey Locust. Slabbed a big one in my brothers front yard a couple of years ago. Looked just like your piece.
Thanks buddy. I guess they look somewhat similar. This piece is sumac 🤙🏻
Looks good, I like the grain, especially at the base.
Nice work Seth
Wow! Spectacular wood. You are a fantastic artist Seth. 🙌🏼😍👍🏼
Thanks ☺️👍🏻

What absolutely gorgeous wood abd a stunning peice of workmanship. ❤❤❤❤

Beeeeee-uuuuuuuutiful. Thank you.
Thank you. Would love to know what you think of my latest video
Very nice, unusual grain.
Yeah, this is a graft point on one of old cherry tree, it’s causes amazing grain in the wood. 👍🏻
Good looking. Well done.
Good job👏👏👏
Прекрасная работа мастера, очень красиво и быстро, резец для внутреннего точения вообще уникальная вещь 👍👍👍
Thanks mate
Beautiful grain, thanks for sharing. Full View and Like 👍
Thanks as always 👍🏻
If I found an interesting piece of wood in my forest, what would I have to do with it to prepare it for wood turning?
Nothing really. I turn mostly green wood. You can season it if you like but you’ll find most of it cracks beyond use. I think this is a wonderful piece of staghorn sumac. In Germany we call it vinegar tree (Essigbaum). Well done.
Thanks. Have you turned much of it ?
Beautiful work! I love the matte finish, what type of finish did you use? Thank you
Thanks the finish was pure tung oil. Have you used it ?

That looks a hell of a lot like redbud! If it is, put it under a blacklight. It’ll blow your mind 🤯🤯🤯
It was a piece of sumac. Does red bud glow like black locust ?
Sure does! It’s beautiful stuff ❤❤
Very pretty wood, but with the harness of Styrofoam SM. I made the box portion of a coffee grinder with finger joints with some sumac many years ago.
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷 tamo junto gostei top demais 😃
Nice! What boring bar do you use? Thanks.
Thanks. I use hope Woodturning tools 👍🏻
That grain would make a nice guitar
Do you build guitars ?
Looks very much like robinia
Nice work,

I do show my stuff in australia and also demonstrate at local mens sheds
Nice thought. Is that how you would have done it ?
I’m thinking from the Gum Tree.
This is a piece of sumac 👍🏻
Beautiful Vase looks like a nice chunk of Laburnum but not 100% sure
It was a piece of sumac ☺️.. same colour as laburnum ☺️👍🏻

Sumac or otherwise known as staghorn
Thanks ☺️
❤❤
How did you remove the tenon?
It was reversed on a jam chuck and turned away. Bit of a boring process to include in the videos but I can leave it in on the next video if they like 👍🏻
@@RedKiteWoodturning thank you. There are multiple techniques to use and like hearing how various turners handle this.
Je pense que c est du Sophora..
It’s sumac 👍🏻☺️
Osage orange is the wood
Sumac is the wood.
Osage Orange or we call Hedge.
It’s sumac 👍🏻
They do look similar.
Definitely Osage Orange…Bois d’ark, hedge same thing
Are you saying this wood is Osage ?
after a more careful look...no. The bark and the brown rings are different. Beautiful specimen though.
@@RedKiteWoodturning
I think IT is sumac
Black locust
Sumac 👍🏻
Memosa
👍🏻
Staghorn Sumac, Lovely Wood

Aproach With Caution..
Have you had issue with it ?
