      It's such a great movie! I wasn't aware of it either until the Blu-ray release, now it's definitely a fave. 🙂

    I've got the Kino Video release of the movie on DVD, and that includes the "Producers Note" as well. I love the way that they refer to Frankenstein's creation as the "Mechanical Momster"!!! I also went into it cold, only having seen some photos in FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND!!! I bought the DVD, sight unseen, simply to have all 4 of James Whale's horror films!!!

    A great review of one of my most favourite horror movies, a little known fact is that Gloria Stuart who played Margaret Waverton was also in the 1997 film Titanic.

    I agree Saul's introduction is amazing but you didn't mention exactly why. When that hand appears on the banister, the audience thinks it is Morgan's. Morgan even appears at that point and starts walking down the stairs, making it look even more like it is Morgan's hand.... Until Morgan keeps walking down and unexpectedly leaves the hand behind still clutching the banister. Only then do you know for sure that Saul is free. A genius moment no question,.

    It's amazing how hard it is to find a meaty review of this. Love this movie so much and it deserves so much more attention

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  5 месяцев назад +1

      It really is a hidden gem! I think that's part of the reason it hasn't had more attention until recently - it was nearly a "lost" film for a very long time, it was only quite recently they found a nice quality print of it so we have all the lovely Blu-ray editions now. SINCE then, however, I've noticed it slowly rising in popularity and always see it favorably mentioned when the subject comes up. It's such a fun movie! Great cast, great atmosphere, lots of twists and turns, and SOOOOO many quotable lines. "NO BEDS!" So it may be late to the party, but I have a feeling Old Dark House will get its long overdue time in the spotlight as time goes on.

      @@zaranyzerak I do believe you're right. It's pretty much immediately captivating and technical sophistication + experimentation is packed into every corner of this movie. It's so stand out and watchable in ways that are amazing to see nearly 100 years on.

    Great first review for October. I first heard of this movie from James Rolfe's "Monster Madness" back in 2009. Then I saw bit of it mentioned in Mark Gatiss's retrospective. Never really saw it, but I will need to find time to find time to watch it, rather I find it on DVD or Blu-Ray or if it comes on "Turner Classic Movies". Don't worry, I decided to skip the spoilers, so I'll be going in pretty cold for this one. 😃

    I put the Old Dark House on top of my list of all the classic 30’s and 40’s era, next to Dracula of course.

    I first saw this movie last year But first heard of it when my local TV channel would run their weekend horror films program, in the 1970s, and in that progamming theyd show this great 1963 documentary MONSTERS WE’VE KNOWN AND LOVED. In it they show Morgan’s photo and mention the movie’s name. That documentary is on youtube. Its great. Have a potato... have a cigar!

    Im watching this now, it’s interesting that Raymond Massey is also in this movie he took the place of Boris Karloff in the film version of Arsenic & Old Lace and there’s a running gag through out that he looks like Frankenstein’s monster. It was originally a stage play but Karloff didn’t want to take time off from the play so Raymond Massey took his place. If you get a chance you should watch Arsenic & Old Lace it’s great, it also stars Cary Grant & Peter Lorre. So far I’m enjoying The Old Dark House. Great review

      Love ARSENIC AND OLD LACE. Lugosi also did the stage play.

    Great review, well weighed and presented, about a film I'd known about since I was a little kid (and that goes back quite a way!) but only seen in last 10 years, and a film I've recommended to a lot of people who've either never heard of it or were somehow not inspired to watch. It's winning more and more converts of this type as time goes on and word spreads. I think it worth mentioning (and maybe you didn't) that a major star like Melvin Douglas has one of the key parts, and the by now well-known fact the actress who played old Rose in TITANIC is in this film in a major part from when she was just a young starlet. Thanks for the review and your urging people to check this film out. It's really creepy, really moody, and full of fun characters...and really nuts! It's the classic that created the mold for countless "car breaks down on a stormy night forcing someone/some people to take refuge in a strange "old dark house' " stories and movies. (Po-tay-tow anyone?)
