PART 2 of the "Stocked Trout" Series here on the Channel! In this video, we catch some more stocked Trout, and we also talk a bit about the ideology/philosophy behind the act of harvesting stocked Trout! :) Hope you folks enjoy it! *Tight lines and FISH ON!*
Extreme Philly Fishing my wife finally let me become a patron thanks for all the great content, people are going to hate no matter what you do, but hey fish taste good so put them in the freezer
Extreme Philly Fishing i had a question i was wonder why or do they when they take stocked fish they make it where they cant reproduce why do they do that and are they supposed to be helping the fish population get bigger but by doing that they cant produce on the wild why do they do that?
highly doubt there is a native rainbow left hardly anywhere anymore.. nonetheless on the east coast.. when you look at 'native trout' they typically remain less than 8 inches or so.. most all the big trout, even here in the west, with a few exceptions (lahontan cutthroat anyone?) are stocked. remember, to the haters, that those trout GIVE A REASON FOR PEOPLE TO BUY FISHING LICENSES. this supports things like game and fish law enforcement, habitat restoration, etc. to me, anything to get more people to pay wardens' salaries etc is an improvement.. here in CA where fishing is under constant attack, they keep passing regulations that encourage less and less people to buy a license, go fishing, get out with the family etc.. bad times for the sport for ALL OF US, regardless of what we believe. CA dfg has a 3M$ shortfall this year, and CA has the same number of fisherman as Minnesota with half the number of hunters, despite SEVEN TIMES THE POPULATION (or thereabouts). bodes FAR ILL for the future of CA fisheries in any case.. you folk back east, enjoy public agencies that put in all this effort on your collective behalf..
Leo... you’re the reason I got back into fishing! Fished a lot as a kid but got away from it. Don’t listen to the people who tell you to say dude/man/son less! The more the better mannnn! FISH ON SONNNNN!
Finally got to meet you and actually made it in your video. Would have loved to talk to you more but I knew you were filming and honestly felt a little star struck when I meet you. It is weird I watch all your vids and feel like I know you but you have never until this day knew I existed. Love your vids and how you present yourself and all the information. Hope to run into you again And hopefully have some courage to have a better conversation with you. Keep up the great work and good luck for the rest of the trout season
My opinion on it is 100% take them home. They feast on native species and it makes me sad lol. I have found several darters in stockie’s stomachs. I’m not blaming them for reducing the population but they’re having an impact on the ecosystem that I don’t like. They’re causing lots of people to visit the creek each day, and those same people unfortunately also trash and pollute the creeks while fishing for them, which I believe is another reason for the natives disappearing. Not too sure, I’m going to write my final research paper for the year on this topic and I’ll learn the full impacts everything has on the ecosystem, from stocking, to trash in the creeks
TheMasterCasters you make a good point that stocked trout can hurt the surroundings of the stream, due to popularity. Another thing to consider is that stocked trout are delicate. And I've seen the trout stocked pond near me in the summer. There is just about no oxygen. So a lot of pond trout will die anyway. In streams, though, the trout have a better chance of survival
Fully agree they have a huge impact on the streams used to catch smallmouth at this one creek spot big ones too like 15 inches. After they introduced it to stocked trout I haven't caught a single smallmouth. I would also catch other species as well suckers, largemouth and even rock bass (connected to the river) but lately just suckers are the only ones I snag.
I grew up on Ridley Creek, just outside of Media, PA. The state would stock the creek below the dam at the Media Water Works (Baltimore Pike), sometimes up to a month before opening day. I would go with my Dad and his buddies and "catch & keep" the stocked trout, mostly Rainbow Trout. Inline spinners, salmon eggs and Velveeta Cheese rolled into a small ball were the baits of choice (no Power Bait back then). The fishermen all pooled their catch and made a bottom smoker out of an old upright freezer and smoked the trout. The families would later get together for a "picnic" with a bunch of side dishes and the smoked trout as the entree. It was a great "pick, pull and eat" picnic with the smoked trout. Good times and delicious meals plus some great "stories" of the big ones that got away. Thanks for your videos. They are excellent, especially since all of the videos are realistic. I also have had many "skunked" days fishing.
I appreciate the suggestion, and as a matter of fact, I have talked about this same idea in a live stream, previously. :) It will come on the Channel one day!
I like how the guy told you you could film if you also help carry some buckets and then you just followed everyone else around while they are carrying the fish. That's the spirit lol
Great video, man. Guys like you have helped spark my "need" to get out and do more fishing. You even reminded me about my old micro-fishing rig I set up last year and never had a chance to go try due to moving. On the question whether or not to take stocked fish. I'm all for the taking of stocked fish. They are generally bred in large quantities, and from what little bit I remember from my ichthyology class, they can actually possess altered genetics due to farms wanting fish that produce more offspring, more quickly. It's part of the reason why there are many places that don't want to set up breeding facilities for paddle-fish, they want to keep the fish as wild as possible so they go out and catch the males and females, surgically remove the eggs, and "milk" the males for the hatcheries (at least the one I got to visit a few years back in Tishomingo Oklahoma. If you ever get a chance to go to a hatchery that does mass work with endangered or threatened species, do it. It's an awesome experience. The Southwestern Native Aquatic Resources & Recovery Center works with around 14 endangered/threatened species and is pretty sweet, from what I've heard. It's in Dexter, New Mexico. (You could do a trout excursion out in NM, and pass by the hatchery, I think they do tours for the public from time to time..lol)
Come to the York PA area for some fishing. Lake Marburg, Redman, Williams and Lake Clark. If I'm not working can join in. Caught a 40+ inch Carp in Lake Marburg last spring.
Here in your neighboring state of West Virginia we are having a gold rush. The DNR is stocking 40,000 golden trout throughout 50 lakes and streams across the state. Thousands of them are tagged. If you catch a tagged trout you get a free Gold Rush tshirt from the DNR office.
Nice to see PA stocking methods. We have several different ways here in NY. Everything from dump trucks of trout to local Boy Scouts helping with the bucket stocking system. No worries about keeping them Pete. Catch and keep the stocked trout the state will stock more.
100% keep, most streams where stocked fisheries are afforded to anglers reach a summer temp that aren't compatable with the non native trout. So the angler keeps and kills or the summer heat. Great channel Leo, we (my family) really enjoy your videos.
There is certainly a lot of controversy around stocked Trout. The whole purpose of stocking is for people to catch them, keep them and eat them. The states raise these fish at a farm to stock streams and lakes for licensed fishermen to catch and keep. Most people also realize that these stocked fish have a very low survival rate during the hot summer months. If the heat of the summer doesn't kill them, most will get eaten by birds and other predators like raccoons. I release almost all of the stocked Trout that I catch so that someone else can catch them and keep them. Every so often my parents like me to keep a few for them to eat. As far as native Trout go, I ALWAYS release native Brook Trout that I catch. Native Brook Trout populations seem to be dwindling so I do all that I can to ensure their survival.
Most people don't understand about which fish and everyone is not catch and release. They have to know fisherman eat fish sometime. We eat in a slot size to eat. Some fish 10in for some and 15ins for others, depending on the species
Personally, if I’m fishing for stocked trout, they’re going on my stringer. I do my best to identify and release any wild trout I catch. Stocked trout aren’t hardy enough to be caught and released repeatedly anyway
Had this guy come up to me the other day very upset by the fact I was keeping stocked trout to eat and was just going on and on about how I needed to release them back into the pond. I get his point but he literally stood next to me for over an hour talking about it hoping I'd release my fish yet he wasn't even soaking his hands before handling and was letting them flop around on cement LOL
I live by a very nice lake here in utah that's called "fish lake" (really original I know) but it's a huge body of water with monster fish in it. Everyone fishes there and it's stocked twice a year (I think, at least once) to help boost the natural population, it seems like you end up getting half stocked and half natural, indicated by differing meat colors
Most of us enjoy watching folks like you, EPF. Stocked fish are for the people en most cases. Sure there are times where they are trying to re-introduce a species into specific waters. But, that is very rare. It's no different than a hunting license.
Great video leo👍great points 👍 I fully agree if they're stocked trout in an area where they're obviously not going to do well keep the fish but in streams were they actually reproduce or can survive well treat them with care as you said
Leo, I find that fishing for trout is much more rewarding with two rod / reel combos. I like to set and forget one with powerbait and then cast a trout magnet or spinner with the other. Great video and tight lines bro!!! ps - I totally agree with your opinions on catch and take!
Hey Leo I was looking on google maps and I saw a water shed called the east park reservoir I don’t know if you ever fished there but if you haven’t you should try it but anyway great videos keep it up.
Love your theory on keeping fish, i totally agree, as long as you eat them and follow the regulations, no poaching I see no harm in keeping a few fish to eat, it really does help the body of water/ecosystems stay healthy
My take on it because I’m an avid trout fisherman in Pa is that I usually catch and release. There are many reasons for this. First is that if I kept every fish I caught I wouldn’t be able to fish long most days. Another reason I don’t keep very trout is because I wouldn’t be able to eat them all and they would go to waste. I enjoy catching trout later into the season and if you keep every fish there will be no fish in the stream in no time. I only keep fish 15 inches plus because those are size I think are the best to eat and in pa you don’t catch many that size so I’m very selective in my harvesting of trout in pa
I just hope the people that take home fertile reproducing trout in a native trout stream gives no complaint when I take home a 5 pound largemouth from a pond.
Leo, would you consider a tutorial on casting sometime? I'm especially interested in the underarm cast. I have trouble with accuracy with that one; especially when I'm "crowded" by tree branches.
Trout are stocked for you to take home. As long as you stay within your limit for your local rules. trout are some of my favorite fish to eat and are fun to catch
i dont mind keeping a trout or two from stock ponds but usually people that i spoken to say they all release their trouts usually because they don't want to eat them n that they don't trust eating fish from stock lakes XD but on some occassion i released all the trouts i caught
Stocked trout, especially the ones you describe should be kept. I mean, that's why they all call it a "put and take fishery". The trout they stock are 14 plus inches and already good eating size. Likewise, as you mention the habitat is not suitable for them and they can't reproduce. People sometimes just few things as black and white.
Leo I don't watch enough of your videos. This one was a great watch, and educational. I salute you for bringing a much needed scientific perspective to the RUclips fishing community. You are an asset to this site and I'm going to watch more of your videos. Well wishes.
Keeping your limit should not be a problem you should not be judging what Leo keeps or not.... love u buddy keep up the good content . Like this comment
Why are you using buckets to take the fish off the truck? I work for the hatcheries in RI and we use nets or shoot them off the truck if we can. We have two maybe 4 people help depending on how the spot is
I almost never keep the fish I catch. Every once in a while I really want to do a fish fry though.I usually keep crappie and bass for those. No trout in my area sadly.
I keep all my stocked trout here in wv cause game wardens i talked to said most them stocked trout in lakes ponds will not survive like our native trout. So if i do catch a stocked trout i keep harvest it so it dont go to wiast. Here in wv its 6 trout limit a day
Leo, why is your leader only 6 inches? How do you figure out how much leader to use? I usually use 4 feed leader for trout and 6-8 on salmon, but I am not sure what is the technique behind that.
The PA DCNR Stocks the Ponds, Lakes, And Creeks around here, and we have fished in mostly ponds, two of the ponds they stock the trout in get deeper then 10 feet, one has an average depth of about 12 feet the other about 5 feet, one is a dammed creek that the creek channel drops to about 20-30 feet because its a cliff that leads to the creek bed the other has deep pockets and is a natural Pond should we release the trout in these two areas?
i have a quick question. what’s the easiest way to get the hook out of a fish that has pretty much it? i’ve seen people rip it out and i’ve seen people spend 20 minutes trying to get it out.
Hey Leo, I know you’re sponsored by kastking, I was trying to find the kastking Ranger telescopic rod but can’t seem to find it. Would you happen to know where I can get one ? perhaps I can maybe buy one from you ?
I am a disabled vet and moved close to a va hospital but used my va loan to buy a old farmhouse and right across for a 1/2 mile down from a creak that is stocked. The bad part is you do not know where and when they stock it. But when i do I catch and eat them. how to the mouth feeling from the wisdom teeth pulled out?
I think that in bodies of water that a stocked trout could grow and live in you should release them but in a little pond where the water heats up and the fish die I think you should keep them
PART 2 of the "Stocked Trout" Series here on the Channel! In this video, we catch some more stocked Trout, and we also talk a bit about the ideology/philosophy behind the act of harvesting stocked Trout! :) Hope you folks enjoy it! *Tight lines and FISH ON!*

Peyton Ledesma generally to keep the Wild population pure genetically. They don’t want the planters breeding with the natives and ruining the species
highly doubt there is a native rainbow left hardly anywhere anymore.. nonetheless on the east coast.. when you look at 'native trout' they typically remain less than 8 inches or so.. most all the big trout, even here in the west, with a few exceptions (lahontan cutthroat anyone?) are stocked. remember, to the haters, that those trout GIVE A REASON FOR PEOPLE TO BUY FISHING LICENSES. this supports things like game and fish law enforcement, habitat restoration, etc. to me, anything to get more people to pay wardens' salaries etc is an improvement.. here in CA where fishing is under constant attack, they keep passing regulations that encourage less and less people to buy a license, go fishing, get out with the family etc.. bad times for the sport for ALL OF US, regardless of what we believe. Great video! Very good explanation of stocked vs wild trout. I really liked the stocking footage too.
Leo... you’re the reason I got back into fishing! Fished a lot as a kid but got away from it. Don’t listen to the people who tell you to say dude/man/son less! The more the better mannnn! FISH ON SONNNNN!
The stocked Trout will die anyway when the water warms.
Fish are yummy. Keep some to eat and let go whatever you're not going to eat
completely missed the point
Actually i didn't. I was just saying my opinion on keeping fish in general.
Finally got to meet you and actually made it in your video. Would have loved to talk to you more but I knew you were filming and honestly felt a little star struck when I meet you. E.O. 0720 I'm curious which one were you in the video
Johnnie Lee possibly the one where Leo caught his PB bass
The last guy dumping the trout in at the falls

DrDemento456 yeah same. I’ve noticed the smallmouth population has declined, but I don’t know if that correlates to the trout stockings
spot on mate!!!
also, over in the U.K. we stock sterile rainbows do you guys do the same?

I love how you asked if you could film the stocking, very good thing to do. Sometimes they don’t like filming
You should do a video where you catch a minnow to catch a sunfish to catch a bass to catch a 10 lb anything
I appreciate the suggestion, and as a matter of fact, I have talked about this same idea in a live stream, previously. :) It will come on the Channel one day!
That would be awesome
I like how the guy told you you could film if you also help carry some buckets and then you just followed everyone else around while they are carrying the fish. That's the spirit lol
Really cool video! New to fishing and never thought about how they stocked the fish. That'd be really awesome to help with! Thanks Leo!
I like your humor, that’s why I am watched all the way in the end in all your videos.

Very nice video Leo trout need two things to reproduce cool water and a gravel bottom neither of which Pennypack has Nor the Wissahickon
Totally agree with your approach to stocked trout in warm water bodies of water!
Most people don't understand about which fish and everyone is not catch and release. They have to know fisherman eat fish sometime. We eat in a slot size to eat. Some fish 10in for some and 15ins for others, depending on the species

I'm not sure how they spend the money in PA, but here in NY our licence fee contributes to the cost of raising and stocking the trout.
Choo Chie same in PA
I love you leo don’t ever stop doing what you love.
Trout fishing seems so cool wish I get a chance to do it one day
Cool video. Way to catch the sticking. Keep what you eat.
Just wanted to say thanks for the advice on live stream this evening.
Leo, would you consider a tutorial on casting sometime? I'm especially interested in the underarm cast. I have trouble with accuracy with that one; especially when I'm "crowded" by tree branches.
I’m going trout fishing today on a school day because I lost days of the vacation to snow days and it sucks
Extreme Philly Fishing you should do a trout fishing video with firststatefishing that would be cool
If you go to spring lake in spring lake New Jersey, they stock it with brown, rainbow, brook, golden and tiger trout
Trout are stocked for you to take home. As long as you stay within your limit for your local rules. trout are some of my favorite fish to eat and are fun to catch
Nice video... Respect the waters and they will RESPECT U!!!!!! Nice to see the man put them back... Face man from Philly overbook
i dont mind keeping a trout or two from stock ponds but usually people that i spoken to say they all release their trouts usually because they don't want to eat them n that they don't trust eating fish from stock lakes XD but on some occassion i released all the trouts i caught
nice job, slaying the trout as always!
Liao -- thank you for fishing in that cold rain today!
Love ur videos man I take all tips u give me and everything I can learn from u
NJ Season starts Saturday. Can't wait !!!!!
Love ur videos getting ready for opening day saturday😄
i was hoping a catch n' cook video :'/ great videos as always Leo, have a good one and good catch!
I like fishing too and trout I can’t resist subbing
When was opening day for you?. Trout ponds open 4th Saturday in April for us
Awesome live stream earlier Leo! Tight lines my brother!
Leo I don't watch enough of your videos. This one was a great watch, and educational. I salute you for bringing a much needed scientific perspective to the RUclips fishing community. You are an asset to this site and I'm going to watch more of your videos. Well wishes.
Great informative video Leo👍🏻....question for you ...1) Do you know why are the Trout are sterilized? And how ?
Great video Leo you are 100 percent correct on your ideology
Awesome video Leo! You're a first class Angler. Much respect!
Keeping your limit should not be a problem you should not be judging what Leo keeps or not.... love u buddy keep up the good content . Like this comment
Stocked trout are fun as hell, but they'll probably die and go to waste if no one keeps them. Love your vids.
In the northeast some of our creeks are stalked year long
leo you need to go try core creek park by the dam facing boat ramp ...
That game warden that asked if u have been to Tyler state park I was just talking to him there
Love your channel. Just found you a few days ago. Reminds me of AntsCanada channel, but fish education instead of Ants.
Some like Catch and Release and then others like Catch and Grease! as they enjoy their fish, the others can enjoy their burgers or steaks or chicken
Opening day is 4/14. You're a week early! My bad! It's different in Philly.
Hey we need to link up in Houston TX or Galveston and get some fishing going I've been dying to get some lines in the water with dude...
Love your vids! Not many good youtubers in the northeast
Naga I’m nowhere near as good as Leo, but I post fishing videos based out of Long Island. I started filming recently. Give it a whirl!
Me and my buddy got to do this last year
Take 'em home. They will feel the *WRATH OF THE ASIANN FOLK*
Leo you are the fish master and I rarely question anything you do. Thank you for the awesome videos!
What is your thought on eating raw stock trout?
Leo come up to Lackawanna county can put you on some nice brown trout 18-26 range not stocked or trophy waters
I know someone in Australia who stocks the trout and he always ends up taking 5-10 trout from the buckets
LOL... leo... we shared the same rod holder stick lol
The question we should really be asking is "is it right to stock these non-native species in our watersheds?"
I keep all my stocked trout here in wv cause game wardens i talked to said most them stocked trout in lakes ponds will not survive like our native trout. So if i do catch a stocked trout i keep harvest it so it dont go to wiast. Here in wv its 6 trout limit a day
Could tell the trout swallowed the hook deep a few times when the fish hit, then line goes slack, then fish is on!
Hey Leo when you go
To Florida again i suggest going Deep sea fishing if you want to catch a lot of new species
We all love wene you post leo keep up the good work
Leo, why is your leader only 6 inches?
I have no problem as long as they are following regulations. I hate to see people keep short fish or go over daily limits
Gripping Lips Fishing there going to died anyways
Gamming 101 regulations exist for a reason. There is no excuse for poaching.
Hey Leo, I know you’re sponsored by kastking, I was trying to find the kastking Ranger telescopic rod but can’t seem to find it. Would you happen to know where I can get one ? perhaps I can maybe buy one from you ?
They stock difrent in the area where im at in new mexico they back the truck up to the water and open the pipes and dump them all out at once
Thanks Leo. Tight lines.
I think that in bodies of water that a stocked trout could grow and live in you should release them but in a little pond where the water heats up and the fish die I think you should keep them
its not the Fact they will grown its more the harm they can cause the other species
Nice justification. I don't eat fish but you made me want to put them out of their misery. I wonder if the same holds true for all stocked fish?
Leo, what is the daily limit for a trout in that creek??
What’s up Leo I already know this is going to be a great video so keep up this great work 👍🏽
