Wouldn't it be great to go back and relive those days?

Excellent 8mm video. Everybody should understand just how difficult and expensive it truly was to record sound in that era! Sound cameras like the Auricon cost a small fortune. If you used a recorder either wire or reel to reel, you had to have a source of a.c. close by or shell out for a dc to ac converter. The average railfan simply made do w/cameras or silent film.

Excellent video. I guess I’ll show my age, but I enjoyed this with the reel sound and no other recorded sound. Sound systems in the ‘50s were excellent, but cumbersome. They were designed for studios or for “live” outdoor reports. Anyone old enough will recall how many vans were needed for live recordings or remote events. All of that was needed for both video and audio. Most railfans back then could not go to the expense and trouble to set up a sound system to sync with the film. I consider this film to be treasure of our railroading past.

A silent film is silent. This was a silent film and some person ( not you ) added the sound making it not a silent film. You could have made it silent and better if you just eliminated the sound. Really guys there is a mute and volume button on your computer. I just made it silent. It wasn't a problem and it wasn't bad enough to thumbs down. I give it a thumbs up for video content. Some of these old films that have any narration, are usually so lame that they are very hard to listen to. Good job.

Well done on so many levels. This fan had an eye for setting up at scenic spots , rare locomotives and some guts to get up trackside ! That NYC run by was a close one. No tagged consists and not a Diesel to be seen. Any ideas on who shot this film ? More please .

Am I seeing the 3985 Challenger at around 7:58? Hard to make out but certainly looks like it is to my blurry eyes. Great film, have always wished I grew up when steam ruled the rails.

Interesting iniital shot of the New Haven mail train. By law, trains had to have a minimum of one coach for passengers. This train has a crummy.

It's a solid mail and express extra, not a passenger train.

This is golden, if only there was sound.

Did you add the clickity- clicks of the camera?
The film is great. The clicks annoying as heck! It’s the equivalent of sitting right next to the projector.

To all the C&O fans who insist the power was lettered in yellow, please note yet again that you are mistaken.
