Michael Jackson loved the Effects so much that he asked John Landis and the Effects crew help him with a pet project he was working on... a little music video called "THRILLER"!
The American Ambassador that visited David in the Hospital was Frank Oz... Better known as the voices of "Miss Piggy" and "Yoda"!

I remember seeing this in its original release. I was so impressed with the mix of comedy and horror. And I appreciated the "moon" related songs. After the sad ending, that uptempo version of "Blue Moon" by The Marcels was a jolt I wasn't expecting. Rick Baker certainly earned the first Oscar for Best Makeup.

This is a great movie. I love the humor and the horror, too. I believe that there is a reason for the adult content here. When David starts turning into the wolf, we see his humanity being taken away. First he is running on the hunt, tackling his prey. Then he inspires fear the the dog and cat. He is at peace with the animals in the zoo. He is one of them. And finally, he is in the adult theater. Carnal violence and carnal lust are now one. He is the werewolf. I love your broadcasts. Nice one.

"A naked American man stole my balloons."
😂 You can't take this movie seriously. 😂
Fun Fact: Mr. Collins is the one and only Frank Oz. Not only is he an actor and director, but is also a celebrated voice actor. Best known as the voice (and puppeteer) of Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and Yoda.
Director Cameo Fact: John Landis appears briefly near the end of the film. He is the bearded man who gets hit by a car and thrown through the plate glass window in Piccadilly Circus.
Practical Make-Up Fact: Rick Baker (the winner of the very first Academy Award for Best Make-up that was created the year this movie came out) claimed to have been disappointed by the amount of time spent shooting the face changing shot for the transformation after having spent months working on the mechanism. John Landis only required one take lasting about seven seconds. Baker felt he had wasted his time until seeing the film with an audience that applauded during that one seven second shot.

    1. Jenny Agutter played Jessica in Logan's Run.
That would be a great first time/share. HINT HINT
    2. "A naked American man stole my balloons".🤣
    3. All of the songs played have something about the moon.
    4. Mr. Collins is played by Frank Oz. (Yoda/various Muppets)
    5. "Shakespeare's French"🤣
    6. It makes you wonder what the speed limit was in Piccadilly Circus. Landis wanted to have fun, and I'm not mad about that.
    7. He had to die and he excepted it.😭

Logan's Run is such a classic Sci-Fi movie.
Totally worth watching, even 50 yrs later.
Jenny Agutter, Peter Ustinov and Farah Fawcett had so adorable roles.
Beautiful story. Loved the soundtrack and audio effects. So old school, but so good.
If watched today, it is kind of hilarious, but at that time, the visual effects even got an Oscar.
The story differs quite a lot from the novel, but still has something really special to it.
      Totally second this recommendation.

No CGI in 1981, at least no CGI good enough to use in a film. Rick Baker did the make-up and effects for this movie. The special effects/make-up were so good that the Oscar Academy invented a category just so they could give Baker an award. So all film make-up artists have Rick Baker and John Landis to thank for promoting major visibilty and respect for the craft of special effects.

Since you mentioned CGI, back then there was no CGI. It was all practical effects. For example the hair growing was done by pulling hairs in through fake skin and then replaying the whole thing backwards.
Another fun fact: Actor David Naughton had a minor disco hit a few years prior to this movie titled 'Makin' It' - You can find the original video on here.
Jenny Agutter who played the nurse had a major role earlier in the 70s in the Sci-Fi classic 'Logan's Run'...also highly recommended for a watch.

"Jack" was played by phenomenal actor Griffen Dunne who's little sister played the teen in huge '80s hit, the Spielberg produced "Poltergeist." She later became a possible victim of the "Poltergeist Curse" as she was strangled to death by her ex-boyfriend not long after it came out. After that Griffen pretty much disappeared as an actor & has mainly worked behind the camera ever since from what I understand. Is a shame. He starred in the only comedy Martin Scorsese did that I know of, the little known or appreciated excellent "After Hours." I can't recommend enough that you at least add it to your long list, my friend!
Saw this in the theater when I was 10. Wasn't a big monster movie fan, but this was great for a "modern" werewolf flick. Another surprising one for me was Jack Nicholson in "Wolf." I haven't seen anyone react to that little horror gem.
    Good job.
    See ya!

Weirdest thing about this movie is how david was in the hospital for 3 weeks and jack shows up looking like he just got killed, yet the next day he's green and looks like he's been dead for months and then the very next day after that he's almost a skeleton. Makes me think something changed story wise and everything was supposed to happen over another a month or two but it got shortened and the stuff about jack never got changed with it to make it fit

Aria, it is wonderful to have you back making these reactions again. You have been missed.
This is a great way for you to kick off your October/Halloween movies.
I personally think that this is the greatest werewolf movie ever made. A great blend of horror, romance, mystery and comedy.
Not to mention that this has the greatest transformation in movie history. Make-up master Rick Baker truly did an incredible job, and no amount of CGI, could do any better.
One of my favorite moments in this movie is when David's doctor goes to the village to do his own personal investigation. It's good to see a character who is not skeptical or dismissive of what may have actually happened. The doctor goes about it in such an unassuming and charming way, that you are really hoping that he discovers what everyone is hiding.
I also like how the movie ends. It shows that this movie was all about David and nothing more.
It's tragic, and sad, yet the ending is a great way to wrap it up.
    Welcome back, Aria!

6:44 - "Oh, they ARE sending them to the werewolf." - Not so much "sending" them as just not doing enough to stop them.
27:33 - "Come on, how many people are gonna die?" - Not counting David himself, eight. The couple in the park, the three guys at the junk yard, the guy in the train station, the usher, and the guy outside who loses his head. More if you count the people who die in the mayhem outside the theater, but David isn't directly responsible for those.
32:31 - "Wednesday?" - Actually, it says "See You Next Wednesday", which I'm pretty sure is a play on "See You Next Tuesday", AKA "C U Next Tuesday".
33:10 - "How are you able to speak, if you don't have the muscles?" - Jack is a supernatural, undead being, so the normal rules of the physical world don't apply to him. :)
Did you notice that all the songs in the soundtrack have the word "moon" in them?

Yeah, this one was quite special. I remember it was very popular among teenagers and young adults to get it on video tape and watch together. It is quite a bit disturbing, funny, tragic, even a bit poetic in a crude way. And it does not take itself too serious. The juxtaposition of the soundtrack with all the moon references with the dark 80s mood of the visuals is absurd, and therefore I totally get your face when the credits went through. What? Yeah, everyone thought that.

I will definitely also recommend director John Landis' "The Blues Brothers" with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi and appearances by Carrie Fisher, John Candy, Frank Oz (playing the asshole American embassy representative and Miss Piggy from The Muppets in "An American Werewolf in London") and a cast of hundreds of extras. It is a comedy, action, musical ode to classic soul, funk, and rhythm and blues. The crazy practical car chases and stunts are brilliantly over-the-top and it is a wild, joyous, and totally bizarre ride. Watch the extended cut to get more of the awesome musical numbers performed by some of the great pioneers of these genres like Aretha Franklin, John Lee Hooker, James Brown, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, and more. The Blues Brothers started as a comedy skit on "Saturday Night Live" and it took on a life of its own.

it's a dirty little secret, that's why the towns people didn't say anything. And let's be honest - if they say we're being terrorised by a Werewolf, the authorities would laugh at them. Whilst it's not actually defined in the film itself, I suspect being a Werewolf, as it's a curse, grants unnatural long life - the wall decoration in the pub that wards off the Werewolf was 200 odd years old.
As to hunting the Werewolf down (the townspeople that is) - far too risky. Far easier to sit inside a warm, comfortable pub on the 3 nights of the full moon.

It may have been mentioned, but the mustached actor appearing at about 11:00 of your review is Frank Oz, the voice of Kermit the frog and of Yoda.

Do I remember you? The movie starts in the English countryside. It looks the Shire because JRRT used the English countryside and its bumpkins as a model.
For a bad werewolf movie the Howling 3 Marsupials.

aria, i don't associate horror movies with halloween, halloween is thousands of years old, and i think it has to do with portals opening up between worlds, and i think we dress up to disguise ourselves, i think the most appropriate movies would be the first two Mortal Kombat movies from the 1990s and maybe Masters of the Universe (1987) and Super Mario Bros. (1993)

Aria, I was holding my breath to see if you liked it. Yes, It's 40+ years old, but...this was VERY popular when I was in college, hugely popular actually, because of a) the special effects, but b) more importantly, it's just really entertaining, in a horror/comedy kind of way, very hard to get right. Glad to see it still holds up today.

I love the way you struggle to apply logic to a tale about werewolves and the undead. lol
You talk about the CGI....but there was no such thing at the time this movie was made. Well, there WAS...but it was primitive, expensive, and took forever to render even the simplest of graphics. All the effects work in this movie is of the practical variety, including the incredible transformation scene. Makeup...models....animatronics....all constructed with incredible attention to detail and intercut as seamlessly as possible.

@@ariachanson01 Yeah, that werewolf transformation scene was also my favorite part. I would've asked the nurse if I could stay in her basement on the full moon nights if I were him and I where to keep living. Still, David would've went on seeing visions of his victims and get threatened by rhem it would've been a shitty time to have none the less. What did you think of the part where David awoke in the wolf's cage in the zoo?

I love that this is a rock and roll horror movie all the way; the soundtrack is killer! Every song is about the moon! 😄 One of my favorite horror movies because of many reasons: the weirdness of it all is definitely another reason I love it on top of the soundtrack, and the humor, and the imagination of it all. And I love Nurse Alex! It's probably the only sex scene in movie history that I think is tastefully done. The ending is great......just like "Dog Day Afternoon"! 🤣 I like a movie that leaves a buzz! Especially if it's a downer! 😂 Anyways, I agree: an EXCELLENT start to the Halloween thing. I'm not into horror movies, I only like a very select few and this is absolutely one of them. "Creepshow" is another one that was made around this time that you would definitely be able to handle and have a good time with. "Rosemary's Baby" and "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" (the 1978 version) are OUTSTANDING pieces of cinema and are the best kind of horror: psychological! Don't you agree? Even THIS one is psychological! It deals with his dreams and his hallucinations and his inner struggle.....ah, it's a great one! A great movie for a great channel!
