11:26 - The makeup and practical effects in this movie are what sold it. For 1981, this was incredible stuff! It won the Best Makeup Oscar that year.
13:55 - Jack's ongoing decay through the movie was disturbingly accurate, and fascinated some of us with an appreciation of details.
17:01 - This. THIS is what made us young horror fans fall in love with this movie. The effects and David Naughton's acting during the transformation sold us 100%!
I've lost my taste for horror movies over the decades, but this one will always have a special place in my kennel... ummm... heart. ;-)

I'm a touch younger, I saw Ghostbusters in the cinema, a old big theater with a balcony etc, when I was 13 also. Films that didn't condescend to the viewer, or wash out for marketing appeal, incredible experiences. We have so much great stuff now, of course, but everything has the tinge of product and there's a lack of culture. What I realise now is that in the 70s and 80s there was a great combination of filmaking craft and art , with big popular cinema. I don't mean just technical craft, but the art of a director.

The person playing the american embassy rep is Frank Oz. He did the voices for Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, and Sam Eagle in The Muppet Show, and Cookie Monster, Bert, and Grover from sesame street. He is also a director having directed hit films like Little Shop of Horrors, The Dark Crystal, Muppets Take Manhattan, In & Out, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, What About Bob, etc.

Rick Baker did the transformation effects. It took a couple of months to plan the technical aspects of shooting the scene, and it took a week to complete the filming, according to google. Another fun fact--the cab driver is Alan Ford, who played Brick Top in the movie Snatch.

An American Werewolf in Paris is more of a horror comedy. It came out in ‘97 and is a fun watch.

I saw this as a kid and it freaked me out so bad I left the theater. Something about the howl and growling still puts me on edge. It's a tortured sound like the creature is in hell on earth. The point about being responsible for the deaths pushing you to kill yourself is a good one but the other side is that a person could learn to live with it and embrace the beast becoming a monster of a person as well as a werewolf on the full moon.

I agree with you, the wolf never sounded like it was vicious in any sort; but it sounded like it was in constant pain which was something I think the movie did a good job showing how becoming this creature is nothing but torment.

The best werewolf movie ever made!
Kinda sad considering this is actually a comedy, tells you how low the bar is for werewolf flicks. Still this movie goes several feet above the bar.
Word of advice: don't bother with the Paris sequel.

I think it's almost necessary to see American Werewolf in Paris to truly appreciate the difference in FX.
It could have been a great movie if they just didn't try so hard to make it better.

I wouldn't say it's a comedy, it just happens to be well written and VERY funny. Comedy is often used to ramp down tension in horror films, the problem is that most horror writers have a terrible sense of humor so most of the time the 'jokes' fall flat on their faces.

It's not like the bar for vampires is that much higher. American Werewolf and the Howling are themselves above most vampire movies. Maybe Fright Night and Bram Stocker's Dracula match it.

Frank Oz.. not just a Muppet guy, he was Jim Hensons right hand man.. and became a notable director.. he made Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, What About Bob and Little Shop of Horrors (1986), among others. But yeah he was also performed Yoda, Fozzy Bear, Ms Piggy, Bert and Cookie Monster on Sesame Street.. and dozens of others. The muppets cameo is there for a reason 🤘

I agree. There was more than one werewolf the people in that village were familiar with. "This place is cursed" is something you'd say after your second werewolf experience, not your first. After your first, you just say, "Fuck! A werewolf!"

This is a legendary classic horror movie that inspired so many later movies, especially in the field of special effects. Rick Baker did the practical and make up effects and won so many awards in the years to come. The transformation scene was the first of it's kind and was later used in many other movies and even in the Michael Jackson Thriller video. I loved the fact that for the first time we saw a werewolf that looked more wolf that human. And the mix of horror and comedy made the movie seem very surreal.

The BEST transformation scene in the history of Werewolf movies. The way it's SUPPOSED to be. Muscles stretching, bones breaking, the whole sha-bang. Looks and sounds very painful indeed. Fortunately, they never remember it. They just wake up naked and confused. God, I miss real werewolf movies.
