Jack Ma is likely the most iconic Chinese billionaire in the world having founded Alibaba and the Ant Group. Over the years, Jack has managed to build over a trillion dollars worth of market value between his companies; however, things haven’t been that great for Jack over the past two years. You see, in late 2020, Jack decided to publicly criticize the CCP’s financial system. He tried to be as cautious as possible and even placed a disclaimer before his statement. He said that he was probably wrong and that he likely didn’t know what he was talking about before offering his criticism. But, the CCP wasn’t a big fan of his speech or his disclaimer. Jack would be called into a closed-door meeting with CCP officials a few days later, and ever since then, Jack’s life has only been downhill. The CCP stopped the Ant Group IPO and has been forcing Jack to hand over control of the company to the CCP. Meanwhile, Alibaba has been pummeled with investigations and fines, and they have been forced to donate over $10 billion to the CCP. The CCP has also gone after Jack’s legacy, forcing him to disassociate himself from his own university. This video explains the downfall of Jack Ma and why you should never mess with the CCP.

Jack Ma is proof (hopefully living proof) that disappearing can still happen. Even the wealthiest man in China (and the world) can criticize the leadership style of his country and never be seen again under suspicious circumstances without so much of a deal being made of it. In a country where the people have been trained since birth to never get involved in the affairs of others (that's the government's job), no amount of high-profile plain-as-day disappearances can begin pushback.
Peng Shuai was an even scarier example of this. Being seen a few times with the same man standing behind her all hours of the day, no access to communication without physical monitoring.

Don't simp for billionaires. China is simply reeling in the oligarchs before they gain too much political power.
A high profile business leader may not criticize the party or the country. A lowly working class person can do it at work, at home, wherever he goes. That is the contradiction of China.
As long as he doesn't do it online, as long as it doesn't get viral, nobody cares. The explanation is simple common sense. If you don't have a big bull horn, you have no influence, nobody cares what you do. Not even the CCP.
_If they can do it to a billionaire, they can do it to me_ is the wrong way to look at it. Whatever happens, they can do anything to you. Putting rich people on a pedestal and giving them extra privileges will not help you. You are not one of them. These extra privileges we see in our own countries that the rich have, does not exist in China. Our boss can fire us, but nobody can fire our boss if they own the company. Not true in China!

I can't see Daniel's comment anymore (RUclips moment) but as a PSA to everyone else, he provided an argument I've never heard of before: He argued that Jack was disappeared because he was gaining political power, and that ordinary people should not have any political power. He compared it to the US where wealthy people can influence politicians more than the poor. It's a communist talking point that I do not agree with. Social media, especially Twitter, does this a lot by applying much more strict rules to powerful people instead of powerless people, and we see the collapse of any ability to challenge the oligarchs here in the US. If anything grassroots springs up, unpersoning and disappearing is the lawnmower.

...but, it has not protected its interest. Their rash actions have devalued many businesses, and caused GDP to fall, and created many obstacles to economic prosperity.
And, the CCP is being judged on economic prosperity, not only because it is desperately needed to overcome their stupid Covid restrictions, but also because Chinese people expect to prosper, and president Xi promotes himself as the driver of prosperity.

I think a lot of billionaires are living their Iron Man fantasy, but the reality is more Jack Ma, with strong parallels to oligarchs in Russia who thought their money made them someone. In the end, the key determiner of power is who holds the levers of violence, and all billionaires are burdened with the key vulnerability of a physical location. A lot of these guys are going to start thinking about how they can discreetly start building private armies.

Having listened to Jack Ma speak, he doesn't seem very intelligent or insightful, it's all branding and cliché. I highly suspect there were CCP insiders in his companies pulling favors to make them appear to perform better than they truly deserved. If he were bright enough to honestly build trillion dollar companies, he would never have publicly criticized the CCP as he did.

I am more inclined to lean towards your perspective. He has made tons of money, and probably wanted to influence the culture so more people without connections, would have the opportunity to be prosperous.
I assume Jack expected his reasonsble criticisms to be taken on their merits. He makes a lot of sense, and even if he were given favours by the CCP - he has managed to be a roaring global success. Only a few other Chinese business people can claim this.
If the CCP were clever - they would have publicly agreed with Jack comments even if they were angry behind closed doors. They would have allowed Jack, and other successful business people to start limited reforms, but pressure them to claim the CCP designed and manages the reforms. Thus, giving the lion share of the credit to the CCP.

The smart billionaires will throw their ego aside but I guess this is another lesson for billionaires in China hire and entire team that does your public relations because you don't want to get in hot water
