Saudi Arabia is not only home to the world’s second-largest oil reserves, but they’re also home to one of the most important religious locations: Mecca. Mecca plays a major role in Islam as it is where Mohammed the Prophet was born. Most Muslims try to pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their lifetimes through something called the Hajj. Given the importance of this city and the wealth of Saudi Arabia, you would think that Saudi Arabia would try to protect the city as much as possible. Yet, they’ve actually been doing the exact opposite. For centuries, Saudi Arabians, and more specifically the Wahhabis have been constantly taking down relics and destroying various buildings in the city. Their reasoning for this is that they’re trying to prevent people from worshipping relics and monuments, but the truth may have more to do with retaining power and control. This video explains why Saudi Arabia has destroyed 98% of Mecca within just the past few decades alone.

You've got a rare knack for finding topics that I've never heard about or thought about and making them interesting. Keep it up
Thank you swaa!
You never heard of it because its not true. Why would a country destroy religious sights and lose its influence by doing so?
The sights that was demolished are illegal houses built by people who came to preform hajj, and never left the country, slums basically.
But hey, some people really enjoy fantasy stories or conspiracy theories.
I'm a catholic: when they demolished ancient churches in the reinassance was only to build bigger churches. Nowadays we would like to see the old churches again and we don't have them anymore. I never knew about this form of iconoclasty. It's a shame and a loss for all humanity. We need to preserve our history foundation, which are important even for faith reasons against the atheistic modernity.
The video has many problems, it starts off by quoting a London based Islamic Hertiage research center which cannot even be found on the internet, it is some obscure organization. The second quote is from a US based think tank run by a critic of Saudi Arabia, so its likely to be (and is) agenda driven which would question its objectivity. The video relies on only one source, there is no diversity of sources which means that the facts shown in the video are not very reliable. The author also demonstrates his lack of research by claiming that Wahhabis existed 'thousands of years ago' citing raids in 1205 (in reality Wahhabis have only been around since the 18th century), which is very interesting considering the fact that the date is in the AH calender which is about 600 years behind the Gregorian one. Another historical error the author makes is the claim that Saudi Arabia destroyed the house of Khadija, the wife of the Prophet. Saudi Arabia was founded in 1932 and the house was destroyed in the 1920s. Lack of knowledge of such common facts further raises questions about the research the author of this video put in. The rest of the video is basically some clichés about the Saudi monarchy with a bunch of political assertions that I am not concerned with, as the entire video is based on the first part which is the historicity, which is itself built on sand. Other Muslims in this comments section have already responded to the rest of the claims made in the video.
Thank you so much for making this clear to people who just straight up nodded their head to everything he said in that video

As someone who did the pilgrimage I am very grateful for the infrastructure built. I have allot of relatives from mecca, they would tell us how in the old days before all of this infrastructure was built poeple would get trampled, and in one of the pilgrimage stages you need to throw stones at a specific site and many people would get injured or killed at that site.
My grandmother had her house confiscated in mecca and she was paid around 2~3 mill SAR ( near 1 mill USD).
BTW I like your videos including the ones about Saudi Arabia. However, I think it over the top a little bit. In my personal opinion allot of the ruling class in Saudi Arabia genuinely believe in Islam and many of there action are genuine (someone who truly believe he will be judged by God for all of his action would act in a certain way).

@@geoffreycharles6330 renting the house!
The people needs hotels with a lot of floors and apartments not a small house that can house a family, do you see why the government pay these people to sell their lands.
I'm Saudi I was born and raised here, my family comes from a line of Muslims and we've lived in the Arabic peninsula for centuries, why we mainly agree on why they destroyed these "religious sites" because they do not hold any meaning for the religion, realistically in Islam you're not required to go to these places to fulfill your religious duties.
Although, as a "tourist" site they would be I guess somewhat interesting for people across the world but we do not want people to use our religion for tourism and fulfillment in fact you can't enter Mecca or Medina unless you're Muslim because there's literally nothing there you can do besides go to these religious holy places and practice our religion, it is not a tourist destination nor it will ever be because that's offensive.
In conclusion, you may ask "why did they destroy it anyway?" I could infinitely go on about the reasoning but it's not as many people believe "Wahabism," it is mainly to avoid people from praying to other people, or worshipping them, or thinking they're anywhere near Allah, in fact this isn't new or recent when the Prophet SWT died a lot of people left the religion, not just that but some people actually partially worshipped the Prophet SWT, people were devastated, Abu Bakar as-Siddiq (on of the Prophet's SWT greatest friends) on that day said "if you worship Muhammed SWT then he's dead, but if you worship Allah he's immortal," he mainly said this to make people realize our religion is based on worshipping Allah not anyone else we only follow the Prophet's SWT steps, he's not a god nor a supernatural, he's also human. At the end of the day I don't want to go too long about this, destroying most of them was for the better to avoid any deviations or any people wanting to worship someone else along with Allah as this is forbidden, eventually most of them were only historic sites barely religious or important to us whatsoever, of course I'm definitely sad that they were destroyed but I think it's for the better because I do think people should follow the religion thoroughly.
From Abul Hayyaj Al Asadi, he said, "'Ali bin Abi Talib said to me, "Indeed I am sending you with something that the Messenger of Allah - sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam - sent me with that command. "Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past."
I believe that most of the historical sites that have been destroyed are for practical reasons.
Statistics can be deceptive; most of the historical buildings destroyed are where the current mosque stands today.
One and a half billion people want to go to Mecca only 2 million can be there at a time and Haj happens only once a year.
If Saudi Arabia does not expand capacity they’ll be criticized for being exploitive.
There is demand for hotels with a view on the mosque, this is what we Muslims dream for and therefore it gets built.
All the infrastructure in Mecca is very practical, other religious sites like Medina are better preserved since the necessity is not as profound.

Very interesting video!...I always thought the giant clock tower and the neighboring buildings of the Abraj Al Bait looked out-of-place next to the Great Mosque. Having said that though - I completely understand why these kinds of large projects are necessary to support the millions of pilgrims that visit Mecca each year...but - as you mentioned near the end of the video - I am sure these mega infrastructure projects could've been done in a way that does not "bulldoze" history. I think the problem with how Saudi Arabia is approaching this is that the process is so "absolute" (i.e. there is no going back once these historical sites are gone). I might be wrong about this since the video did not specifically comment on this fact - but I am getting the impression that as these historical sites are paved over, there doesn't seem to be any attempt to officially record what is being lost (even if just through detailed imaging). I can't help but feel that at some time in the future (maybe generations from now), Saudi Arabia might end up regretting the destruction of part of its cultural heritage. There have been more than a few examples in history where - in hindsight - one generation sadly regrets the loss (accidental or deliberate) of cultural/architectural legacies that took place in a previous generation. And while a society can learn from this regret....that doesn't change the fact that what has been lost, has been lost forever.
We can never be sure if stories of the past are true so much related by ancestors is tribal fiction . Over attention to structures may lead to a form of shirk, which is why statues are forbidden in Islam.
They destroy historical sites, but they are owned by materialistic way of life to the point they somewhat worship them, how ironic

What exactly is wahabi Islam?I'm a Muslim from a country in east Africa and never heard of such terminology?
Who created this name?
Well, while Saudi government may have caused unprecedented magnitude of cultural vandalism,I hold the opinion that those structures were either expanded to accommodate the ever growing Muslim pilgrim.
Furthermore,we don't worship the prophet house nor that of his companion.
Much as those structures maybe vital for future generations of Muslims for it serves as a tangible evidence that indeed those Muslim leaders existed at one stage in time, thus proving their very existence beyond myth, building boarding and lodging for Muslims faithful too is not only vital but essential all together.
By the way both Sunni and Shia believe during the end time people will start worshiping things other than the God. And so it is actually a big fear amongst both big sect of Islam to prevent than from happening but you are absolutely correct this is erasing history. But I wanted to point out the context and fear amongst Muslims and why there isn’t much outrage on this matter.
We Shia don't like destroying graves of Holy People.
Oh dear, better not stop worshipping god, that could bring the end times!
Its definitely a mystake. If they just let Mekka develop themselves and protect its architecture they could have a naturally build old city with a solid income base. Thats what they desperately need sometimes too much involvement isnt positive.
How stupid, makkah is for pilgrimage, we need a city that can accommodate millions a day, not photograph takers.
Hundreds of millions, if not billions of muslims wish to come here, making it as large, developed and comfortable as possible is the best way to serve the pilgrims
That's plainly wrong. Makkah is a holy city for pilgrimage. It doesn't make sense to keep huts made of mud and stones which would just hinder the path of the worshippers.
the city isn’t meant for income, it’s city of worship, not make money off it, you never even seen the pictures in it or the buildings they teared down, they tore down because it was old and decrepit

the purpose of Makkah is for Umra and Hajj and to serve a lot of Muslims. They need services and infrastructure, not old cities and historical places, because it is for worship, not tourism.
Saudi Arabia has expanded the holy mosque extraordinary to make it easy for millions of Muslims to visit Makkah and do the Hajj and Umra safely.
yet so many Muslims from so many countries, nations and schools, were either sad, depressed or angry, because destruction of that sites. Why Mecca need to be THE ONLY sacred place in the world, which is completely free of history, while usually sacred places are completely immersed in history, in prayers and hopes of hundreds of generations which visited them, and physical remains from all that ages?

Muslims go there for pilgrimage so, the pilgrims must be given the upmost value, comparing to that value of some old building is none.
And about Saudi Govt they are doing the right thing to prevent any scope of "Shirk"

Makkah needs to expand if it needs to accomodate all the growing number of muslims.
It is actually one of the core tenants of Islam not to worship anyone but God. It is said in Quran that all previous prophet failed to spread Islam because their followers ended up worshiping things other than God. Example: Jeasus and Moses’s followers.
Correction saudi Arabia is not an Islamic kingdom but a Muslim kingdom country and Islam has nothing to do with any country in the world today.
what Saudi Arabia destroyed has nothing to do with Islam 😊
Just to correct, Prophet muhammed (Peace Be Upon Him) is not the founder of Islam. He didn't "create" anything. Everything is from the One Who legislated the laws of Islam, which is, undoubtedly, Allah.

Their culture is theirs to decide. But if the people are in majority displeased with then it’s fair to say they are authoritative.

As a saudi its really annoying to deal with those people who have a deep insighted entitlement to our lands, culture and tradition. Seeing your comment gave me some relief haha
I really appreciate this video. However...how much of European or American history has been destroyed? New York City doesn't have much from its history as New Amsterdam.
In fact, I just watched a video where they were talking about all the mansions surrounding Central Park, that are now gone and replaced by skyscrapers. And even the earlier skyscrapers are being replaced by new skyscrapers! So perhaps, a good video would be about just how much or how little "history" should be preserved. While that would be a very interesting and intensive documentary, it would also stir up a maelstrom of debate and argument on BOTH sides of the issues.
Still..................keep up the good work, regardless of what direction you plan to go!
According to another documentary, apart from the first mosque(?) in Jerusalem the next 11(?) that can be dated chronologically are all pointing to Petra, the first one to point to Mecca is about 800AD in Pakistan. There doesn't appear to be an important settlement before that in the archeological record(?). So perhaps the sites in Mecca that have been replaced weren't there in the first place? And the notices about the unreliability of the previous narratives about the site are just being accurate? I'm not sure what the present title is, the program used to be 'The sacred city Mecca, is it in the right place?',and freely available on RUclips. Your piece was very interesting , Thank you.

Errors in the Quran about Abraham
Another series of errors in the Quran is about Abraham. Abraham never visited Arabia nor a nonexistent city in his time called Mecca or Baca. He was never there. The Bible is very accurate on geography and who went where. We can still find these places today based on the Bible description. Abraham according to Genesis was never in Arabia. Muslims can’t admit this because Islam falls apart if this is true, but it is true! The Quran claims that Abraham built the Kaaba and mosque in Mecca 40 years before Solomon built the temple in Jerusalem which would have been 990 BC. What?! Abraham built his altar on Mount Moriah in Israel in 2,055 BC to sacrifice Isaac. Abraham had been dead 1,000 years by the time of Solomon in 950 BC. Too many chronological and historical errors in the Quran.
Every religion claims that their not man made
