Train Horn Blow Run-by with Nathan Airchime K5L (K5LA) & Prime 920

  • Up in Northern Michigan north of Grayling for the annual cousin's weekend (the guys only, need I say more?!) with my static rig. On it are two horns I rebuilt: Nathan Airchime K5L with bell numbers - , 2, 3, 4, 5. The large number 1 bell is not numbered. Some say it's a K5L, some say it's a K5LA. Sounds pretty good either way...you be the judge. The other is a Prime 920 with bells P50195, P50194, P40254; the same sounding bells as a Leslie Supertyfon S-3L: bells 25, 31 & 44. Tank is 80 gallons w/ 125 psi, horns are controlled by 2 separate Graham White 2 stage valves and air lines are 3/4 inch & regulated at 75 psi. Lanyards control the valves right off the tank.
    First horn blow is about 3/4 mile away. Great echo and doppler effect! Note the typical Prime/Leslie "squeal" later in the video. Doesn't do that if the valve is opened quickly.

      Thanks for the comment! I can't believe it's been over 10 years since I shot this video (my cousin, actually...I was driving). I'm getting ready to install a Canadian tuned K5HLA on the rig soon. Time to do
      another run by!

      Imagine the same but, in England when locomotive engineers hardly ever blow the horn. Plus electric train approach even at high speed very quietly.

    • @friendlyfire2615
      @friendlyfire2615 5 лет назад +3

      Less scary since you wouldnt worry as much about death, high speed trains will kill you quickly, freight trains run way slower and will dog into you slowly, causing more pain.

    If you wanna hear a K5LA on a train, I would recommend Amtrak (passenger service throughout most of the country) and CSX (a Class 1 railroad east of the Mississippi River), since they have a lot of K5LA's. (Beware, CSX's K5LA's are VERY loud.)

    I've always wondered about this particular horn. It's nearly identical to a standard K5LAR24, but there's something different about it. Amtrak frequently uses these on their Empire Service trains, and I've heard it on a few CSX GP40s and 38s. There's gotta be some special name for it or something!

    The lines ARE 1/2". Anyone serious in the hobby knows that is what you use. The feeds to the valves are 3/4". If I ever think of it and get a chance, I'll put some closeup pictures on my flickr site and put a link here.
    BTW I've taken the Prime off for now and mounted an RS-5T in its place. Haven't done a road run yet, but stay tuned...
