    Best sounding PVC train horns on RUclips. Great work fellas!

    That first horn M5 has a great sound that sounds perfectly matched to the train horns I heard as a kid being blown in the distance as I was getting ready to fall asleep. I actually found this soothing for some reason. My hearing was really good back then but not wearing earplugs messed me up bad.

    I've watched all your videos and I'd say this is the one where the horns sound their best. The one where you blow them on a small table in the backyard they sounded flat. Like musically flat/ out of tune. But this video clearly shows that they are tuned better. I have a real k3 in the front bumper off my car and am thinking about building another set for the back bumper. I will be using your tips to build my own. I know these a kinda old but you should do a more in depth one on the tuning process. Thanks for taking the time to show everyone what's possible with some pvc fittings and some effort.

    Your K5LA does sound like one to me, and I came of age with the ones on Amtrak and Chessie System in the late 1970s/early 1980s. There is a one note difference between those two types, but I don't remember exactly what the one note difference is, or exactly which one yours sounds most like. I think it favors the Amtrak tone, but I'm not sure. U. S. train horns usually blow off of the main reservoir tank on the locomotive, which is set for 130-140 psi. I don't know if there is normally a reduction valve between the main res and the horns. Yours sound just fine at 95 lbs. You could have fooled me outdoors wondering where the train was. Back then the railroads mounted the horns directly on top of the cabs, and at that time didn't allow engine crews to wear ear protection, so there's a lot of hard-of-hearing retired railroaders from that era.

  • @1227air500
    @1227air500 8 лет назад

    Very impressive, along with your other great videos !!
    Can you reduce the loudness just be reducing the air pressure, or are they tuned to sound best at a specific pressure. The feathering with the ball valve sounds really, really sweet, even though a ball valve is kind of poor for modulating air flow. I bet it won't be too long before you disassemble the ball valve and contour the hole thru the ball to smooth out its affect. Nice work!

    Oh I know from experience one time and maybe the times before a few Friday’s who last month or so we went to a bar called back 40 here in Birmingham Alabama and near that there is an abandoned steel mind called Sloss Furnace with a working train track for trains in front and either a minute or a second after the train blew it the horn at the crossing I felt kind of deaf

    WOW! 128 DB is twice as loud as 125 DB.....AND 128 IS 1000 times LOUDER THAN 100 DB! Not bad at all for plastic! For every ten decibels its 10 times the former measurement, so 28 dB is almost 1000 times as loud. When you have that level of noise, your ear can't tell the difference between 100 dB and 130 dB!!!!

    But then and now I’m fine I think listening to music kind of loud has helped my ears maybe be more tough plus I’ve been doing it as a kid with my dad and I’m only 19

    • @dearboy05
      @dearboy05 5 лет назад

      You can't toughen your ears. Every loud noise affects your hearing negatively to some degree. You may notice it right away, or when you're older. But, it will affect you at some point. If you like the idea of being able to hear and not needing a hearing aid, WEAR EAR PROTECTION for mowing, weedeating, grinding, circular sawing, air powered tools and other loud tools. And consider volume reducing ear plugs for concerts. They are made by brands like Sony. They are designed to lower the volume without sacrificing sound quality like foamies do.
