Hey Ronny, for me this is the best build video I've watched, with the roof top camper design of particular interest given that I'm in the concept planning stage of my own future build. Questions; How do I get in touch with Marty?
The best part was the whole thing mate, it was a build that many can relate and share in our own experiences. It wasn’t over the top but instead practical. If you want to do one with a off-road camper and Defender let me know!
Best Part is that they were always thinking about the weight of the vehicle during the build. Even now in the interview they were talking about removing this or changing that to save weight. Great watching this Ronny, cheers!!
The rear camper part is more of what I expected Andrew from 4xOverland would build, on chassis rather than an on tray setup and very versatile easy access, well done guys very well thought out and everything that can go anywhere for any adventure, learn allot from not just throwing money at a project, very well thought out and not over thought . 🤙
As soon as ASPW went for a dual cab I knew it would end up being a BIG unit. That's a lot of extra vehicle just for loading photography gear. If Andrew can compromise on that .......
This car is like fifth of the pice of Andrew's land cruiser but even though for me its just better. Outstanding joob on that build, really well thought.
@@darylbroadfoot927 I think so too, but I get if she didn’t feel comfortable on camera - not everyone is - and I’m glad he didn’t take all the credit 😂
I still dont understand his monstrosity, everyone knew it was shite and too heavy when he was building it, and what was the point of the dual cab to rip out the back seats? So much wastes room and extra length because of that. This patrol is a fantastic example of a rig for two people that is capable and comfortable and isn't the size of a cruise ship.
If ASPW was to give the camper to me I would I would take it. However with the benefit of hind sight I see if you are going for those larger builds you may as well pull the trigger and get an expedition truck than convert a Landcruiser into something that it is not. _"If you serve too many masters, you'll soon suffer."_ - Homer Stay safe and good luck!
These are the builds that are genuinely interesting to watch. A vehicle that is clearly well used, and thus well sorted out. Not just another bolted on accessory rig.
This is how you set up a rig for trips. Lots of planning for use and layout, input from all involved, nice and simple systems, efficient use of space, you name it, this has it. I'm impressed. "Less is more" I totally agree as well.
This guy has really done his homework & thought it out & didn't leave a stone left unturn with his outfit... Great work my friend & thanks heaps Ronnie 👍
This has to be one of the best well laid out and practical setups I have seen. Can take almost the whole lot out for putting in his work gear for during the week, can move things around for what type or length of trip they are going to do. The absolute best thing they have done is had weight in the forefront of their thinking. Used plastic bins and click clack boxes for storage and the weight distribution by having heavy items forward of the rear axle. I don't think people realise the importance of keeping weight down and weight distribution when they are thinking about Touring builds. Less stress on the vehicle and far better economy if your not hauling around the unnecessary weight and accessories. Well Done!!
Fantastic build - down to earth, sensible, practical, adaptable, economical yet comfortable. And his lady is happy too - major bonus! This couple know what they're doing and have got it right. Well done!!
Best setup off-road camper to date. Hasn’t gotten caught up in the trap of needing all that extra crap the shops are trying to sell you. Great build, love it.
Probably the best most practical rear set up I've seen, just when I thought I'm happy with my own😅😂 back to the drawing board! Awesome rig! Good stuff Ronny!
This is a great build. Love the GU. I got into Patrols by chance. I had to find a vehicle for a specific job and the Patrol ticked all the boxes. Been driving one ever since. I am from South Africa and here they are actually cheap! Also a TD42 nicely tuned and a pleasure to own.
I have a 2012 GU Patrol Cab Chassis with a Australian Work Leisure Canopy which I am rather happy with, but this was an excellent review of Marty & Sally's GU Rig . . . which is an excellent well sorted out built, hat's off to Marty & Sally's on their GU Rig . . . most impressive.
wow, first one of these that I've fully watched, usually more about street cred than practicality. Clever dude and wife, such a well thought out build, not out to impress any one or thing. Impressed...
Simplistic no fuss camper build that obviously works very well due to the time they have owned it, a very nice example of simple pleasures are the best ones 👍👍
Hi Ronny, watching your channel for a while now, years, not sure now being disappointed or very happy! This is the very best simple setup not overboard crazy Outfit build travel rig. It ticks all my boxes for a build like that. But you let us wait for years to present us such awesome build rig!!! Hahaha. Please try to get some more exceptional nice builds and show it to us, very much appreciate. Cheers mate
The thing with ASPW anymore, he really doesn't use what he builds for any real length of time. Good ideas in the head don't always work as one thinks in the field, either due to complexity, storage, actual use, weight...
Ronny this is your natural talent to do modify episodes; leave those car reviews alone as not your strength. Loved this episode and can’t wait to see more tourers!
Very impressive, I can see where she's drawn inspiration from various slide-on campers, and from the half-built photos you included, it looks like it wouldn't be too hard to move the wheelarch if they had to replace the Patrol with something else down the road.
I WANT ONE! Very very nice setup. Covers all the basics and doesn't get too fancy yet it would be like travelling in a hotel very well planned and executed build 👍
Everyone looking at this loves it because they can see themselves building an affordable, practical, lightweight off road camper I personally can’t fault anything even down to his Helinox chair at 900 grams (he did not even have a spare for Ronnie) lol
Great, great episode. I try to use this mindset for building out my 4Runner here in the states. Keep it light, simple, what’s truly needed, focus on keeping the engine happy and healthy and modular storage with room to spare.
Great vehicle, great attitude, fantastic setup for the bed, really good back to basics setup so you can go out end enjoy the destination, not about if you brought 20,000 different things , after all that's what it's all about 👍👍👍
Amazing how much better packaging you can achieve with a single cab ute. I don't know why people continue to fuck around with dual cabs when they all have issues with weight distribution. Excellent canopy layout and attention to weight saving.
Merge this rig with graham Cahill's GU with the Fridge "Pass through" ExtraCab- Though even with a single cab you run out of room - a lot of features end up as: "This OR That, Choose one." If you really want to Glamp - a Camper trailer / Compact Caravan allows for more kitchen Sinks, if that is what you want. (A Winnebago - or any "camper truck" - is even more of an offroad compromise, and you can't just unhook and recover the 4x4ability..)
I think the "Carry me" camper and "tray back" camper models are better designed, because you don't have to reserve an empty space to climb inside to the bed. The back folds down to open up an entrance, leaving the entire interior available for storage.
ADRs stipulate that for off-road passenger vehicles, rear mudflaps/mudguards need to be max. 300mm off the ground. Just an FYI for others thinking the middle of the hub is acceptable...
Really well thought out build. Loved the thought that went into the weight of the vehicle and the simplicity in using plastic tubs etc. Really functional and easy to adapt to different environments/situations.
Andrew from 4xoverland should watch this, as much as i admire the man he missed all these points, how good is the rear area to walk up into. a very practical and logical build.
As good and knowledgeable as Andrew is (I enjoy every episode), his latest rig was not well thought out. He wanted more interior room for film editing etc and he didn't get it - rather a major oversight to pick the wrong shell. And the electrical system seems to be a huge, and ridiculously expensive, overkill - but I guess that was his focus for this latest build. The result - a heavy and very pricey vehicle compared to this completely well thought through design.
Seriously considering a set of his MT ATZ tyres, my step bro said his lasted 150,000km which is just insane good. However a lot of online reviews say very poor wet performance and living in the wettest place in the country i need to find a good wet blacktop All Terrain.
We've just bought a pre loved "Tong camper". Great tips on setup/storeage options to keep weight down & use space wisely. Kitchen layout helpful. Insulation tip very helpful too for us. Having a useable canopy for working week then a camper on trips is a lacking feature in most canopy campers
The Actual Canopy / Camper is pretty Straightforward. Now you have seen their Idea take it one more step and customise it, the UK has totally different use-cases than Australia. (ie. In the UK, Offroad often means little more than down a forestry trail, or parking up next to a gateway - to the boggy Extreme.)
This is such an awesome vehicle and video. Thanks Ronny, that was really good! It is awesome to see that it is both the big things (the camper!) and all the small things (the table for the gas burner) that make an awesome build!

No need for a "best tourer/camper" competition now. This one takes the gold medal by a mile.
This is my favourite build I have seen. Love the attitude and ideas of the owner- focus on weight and efficiency.
I would agree, love the thought & design into reducing weight, as well as keeping to the less is more
I agree! They did this build properly.
and he's probably made most of that by himself. He's a real handyman. Everything is well thought.
This is one of the best camping 4x4 setups I’ve seen. Thanks.
What a great bloke to interview
Some very well thought out advise and knowledge
Agree, such a great couple/team to interview

A lot of lessons in here for 4XO
Especially the height with Gwyn needing steps for everything 😂
It seems Andrew is his own worse enemy.

This car is like fifth of the pice of Andrew's land cruiser but even though for me its just better. Outstanding joob on that build, really well thought.
I was thinking the exact same.... I'm actually a bit sick of those excessive builds; they're just not needed....
I think a lot of people are! Its relatable, normal people cannot afford them.
that is a really well thought out build , got everything you need & no excess
Only thing left is to paint it blue and call it the Tardis. What an awesome setup, Sal knocked it out of the park with that design!
Hats off to the wife for designing it - would have loved to hear from her how she came up with the design and layout
Would have been the perfect modified interview, but loved this one all the same what a great bloke he was,

@@J00LZ49 absolutely.. Andrew went crazy there
He got so much free gear, so he just kept adding to it. It’s appalling in design and not practically for daily use.
Lol I thought the exact same thing. Hope ASPW is taking plenty of notes.

I respect that dedication to light running. The other option is to forcibly diet the missus down to the desired weight. I recommend 45kg.
