Invincible is back baby, and not only is Mark double cheeked up for Episode 1, it’s also setting up some BIG things on the horizon for the rest of Season 2. So this episode kicks off in a dystopian way, with what looks to be Invincible's current Earth from season 1 completely in shambles, and by some sheer will and happenstance Omni-Man and Mark are now working together, conquering Earth for the Viltrumites. Comic readers should be familiar with this, pulling directly from issue 16’s opening, featuring almost beat for beat what goes down here.
Honestly I was a little confused by this, what i thought was a massive time jump, but rather we learn this season is introducing multiple dimensions… The multiverse is alive, baby! Specifically being accessible by a new character Angstrom Levy. The guy very much has the power to open portals into any and all dimensions, via a Rick Sanchez like green squiggly portal. We’ll get more into Angstrom in a bit, as this dimension is one where Mark teamed with Omni Man and essentially laid waste to much of the world.
Now the thing that stood out to me was Mark and Omni Man’s attack on the remaining heroes in the underground bunker, which is heavily in line with the opening of X-Men Days of Future Past. Obviously the Invincible comics released before that 2014 movie, but yeah the pieces are right there, almost spot on of our heroes having gone through some $hit, some missing in action, and so forth. On top of that, Mark’s confrontation with Eve resulting in her being paralyzed, feels like a nod to Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl from The Killing Joke, ending up in a similar fate. Different but both superheroes being paralyzed in action. So if we keep returning to this evil Mark’s dimension, I’m curious if Eve will be wheelchair bound.
One interesting thing is the remaining Guardians of the Globe attempting to use something called “Null Energy” to stop Omni Man and Mark. This may be just some nullifying energy Cecil created for them, but I’m wondering if this is a subtle nod to another image comics character
