I'd love to play with a pick. When I attempt to, my grip is too weak and I unconsciously put it down and revert to using my thumb.

Avoiding learning music theory and understanding rhythm, metronome work, because i just wanted to learn songs. But as I began learning a song and ran into a difficult aspect of it, moved on to another song until I knew parts of many song but never knew one song completely.

My biggest guitar mistake is to have started to play bass. I still love to play guitar but I just found a bigger vibe with the bass and that definitely slowed down my learning process with the guitar.

hey man could you please do a video on guitar accompaniment with other instruments? I think a lot of guitarists (myself included) play by themselves a lot and that is very different than playing in a setting with other instruments covering different parts of the frequency range... was just wondering how you approach playing "simply" when you have to and making the notes that you play really count in relationship to the other instruments. Thanks for all that you do! much love

Great content! My biggest mistake (like others) was spending too much time with scales and patterns and not enough time trying to make my own melody. When improvising, I would try to make the scales I remembered fit the chords as they went by. I made a huge leap by imagining the melody in my head, then playing it - THEN I would find out why it sounded good - I started noticing myself using altered notes as leading tones into the next chord, etc.
I helped myself break out of this by playing my melodies on one string - not worrying about patterns but more about making music.

I am a bassist and decided to start playing guitar and your videos are the best I’ve found lately to inspire me to learn.
I’m having trouble playing your arpeggios video because my strings make some noice and I’m working on muting so that my notes sound clean, but it’s a bit hard to always keep strings that aren’t being used muted.
Thanks for making this channel. Irked and subscribed!

This is great video and u covered some very important facts ....fingers cannot play without mind understanding ...from birth we learn through playing as children ...it has to be interesting and u have to love guitar sound (acoustic) so that u would grabb it in any availbl time of day ...i use it for stress relief or kill boredom ...and i learned to play (in decades) ...most important to know is = fingers cant play what mind not projects so its important to get it to level of automation, like driving car when u not think where is wich gear, or wich pedal is brake ...if u think of it u crash (no fluid playing) ...thank God i got there finally ...now it's easy

Awesome! You are so genuine and obviously really care about guitarist improving.
mmmmmm, so many guitar mistakes but if I can choose only one it would be not working enough on fretboard visualization ie : note names, scale patterns, arpeggios and intervalic functions.
I worked hard on getting the fretboard notes down when I was a teenager and then never pushed too far into any of those other fundamental pillars of fretboard knowledge until a few years ago in my late 30's.
The freedom you get from solid fretboard knowledge is 100% worth the hours, I've still got so many more to put in 😀

I’ve been playing guitar for 25+ years. And I’ve just recently come to realize that my main failure has been focusing on scales when improvising, instead of focusing on chord tones. Always knowing where the current 3rd and 5th are in the current chord when improvising is something I practise now, and things make so much more sense.
But it’s hard for old dogs to learn mew tricks…

Just like school kids, who live in unstable homes, usually do not excel in their school work, it seems that the rest of a guitar player's life - work, relationships, and the level of stability or instability there, are very important and have a big effect on how he/she is able to progress and learn.

More than "10 mistakes..." this is 10 great things to do to get better. Thank you so much for your work Rotem! I get very overwhelmed and confused and anxious, as you mention at a moment in the video, that's my worst mistake, it is discouraging but you really have helped so much! I think aiming for speed was also a problem, I have been taking your advice to slow it down. Thank you again!

My main mistake as a beginer was to focus more on my left hand thinking that all the "work" had to be done there. Both hands are important, and the most important thing for me is learning to work on how to made them both work together. Nice video!

My worst mistake was that for too long I was focused too much on the guitar itself than on the music. I mean that I was doing a lot of excercises etc. but no music like even listening sth and trying to copy that in the best possible way. All changed when I started to sing some simple songs. Then I realized that music is much more than just an instrument. Now I try to listen/fell first then I start to play sth on the guitar.

You are really awesome Rotem. I am so glad that i met You on Jens channel. I am hearing and seeing so many things that i hear and see, too! i am using Your content to evolve further as a conscious beeing (and for music university lol).
my biggest mistake? often enough when i play for a certain time i tend to tighten my dynamic range. i start pickin the notes at even attack volume and turn into a human compressor. so i put the instrument down and refill my dynamic energy. i also turn up the gear's volume and play really pianissimo. what happens is that i choose the louder articulations way more carefully.
another good training is to not use piano and forte but try to swing/ bob with just pianissimo and piano. or mezzo forte and forte. forte and fortissimo. then pianissimo and fortissimo. (jimmy rosenberg is a master for this).
i lile your tone very much

Two of my biggest mistakes: not playing jazz in a band with other musicians soon enough (bass, drums, horns, piano). Also, waiting too long to start working on “hard songs” (complicated bebop heads by Charlie Parker, etc). When I started doing these two things my playing jumped further in one year than it did in the previous 10 years of practicing Autumn Leaves and Summertime, playing solo guitar, and doing duo gigs with singers.

Biggest mistake for me was not loving the instrument as much as I should have and not seeing music for the social tool it is as well. I turned the guitar into something I hid behind and worried over instead of sharing and exploring a shared interest with the people around me. Get out there and play with others people, there’s nothing like it

My biggest mistake was that I used to memorize scale shapes, arpeggios, position boxes and melodies for convenience instead of properly understanding the theory behind it. I'm a jazz student at a university in South Africa and had never played any jazz before I got there. The first year course was not beginner friendly and often found myself overwhelmed and demotivated. The honest truth is , no one can rush the process because it always finds a way to humble you😂

My biggest mistake is I didn't learn the notes on the fretboard fast enough. By the notes I mean that if I pick a string and a fret, can I name that note right away? I not in ten seconds by counting up or something. Knowing the notes made stuff start to come together much faster. I was able to find chords in different spots quickly.

My worst mistake was to grab the neck with thumb on top like most pop/rock guitarrists do. I did that for decades and then I wanted to play classical guitar. I had to relearn everything, placing the fingers for scales or chords it's completely different when your thumb is behind the neck.

    My biggest mistake:
I like modern approaches to jazz guitar, but...
I learn one thing after another, and as soon as I feel I already understand it well and know how to play it, I move on to the next amazing thing.
But I didn't have time to play the previous one in front of the audience long enough to automate it and get into my hands.
So my brain knows a lot and is happy with it, but my hands haven't mastered it yet.
Then I am frustrated that I am not able to put those amazing new approaches into practice as I would like.
But there are so many! Do I need more patience? Don't konw...

I think my mistake/bad habit is slightly arpeggiating chords almost every time instead of playing all at once as a block chords. That slight arpeggiation can be tasty occasionally but I find the mass amounts of time I do it in an arrangement... just sounds bad lol

  • @Feverdream7777

For me, a fundamental problem was lazy picking technique. My resting my thumbpad fat/wrist on the guitar body forced a VERY poor position for shred style picking. Instead of downward pick slanting, which supports aggressive down beats, that lazy technique I was using for 30 years, forces upward pickslanting...which ruins everything related to heavy metal shredding correctly.
Troy Grady illucidated the matter, but it took me a *full 5 years* to work out the physically and mentally engrained problems I started with. Now, I can shred like Yngwie, or whoever... no problem.

I've short arms and hands. I feel musically, much more merged when I put body's guitar on my right leg, but It hurts a lot my left wrist when I'm playing bars or 6st string, even if I lift a lot the arms guitar. Are there any exercises to impruve flexibility or do I must adopt the classic stile guitar position on the left and lifted leg?
