    I don't know whether to describe your videos more as either inspirational or informative. I'm slowly building parts of a Japanese garden and don't really plan to ever completely finish. Thank you.

      Good luck with it! Haha, I usually try to fall somewhere around that line. Too much info or inspiration can get a little thin.

    I'm so glad i traded a Harley-Davidson for a Toro Dingo mini skid steer machine. At 64 it's the smartest purchase i've made for my Garden that is 40% complete now here in Virginia.

      Hey, thanks for the comments! Japanese Garden TV is good as they are an active landscape company in Japan, but it's a lot of reading (subtitled).

    Dang I picked out 3 boulders for my driveway circle garden and they are each individuals. Missing the wa (harmony). I call them The Prima Donnas ( kind of like the Lone Rangers joke from Airheads). I’m just planting 2 small hinoki and a drift rose and a globe spruce. The stones will be the focal point.

    This video was truly helpful. I am starting to learn about Japanese garden design. Would like to design/install something like this across the front of my mid-century brick 1-story ranch. It's quite shady, due west with a huge overhang, which makes it difficult to do a "normal" type of front yard landscape. Simplifying to a rock and moss garden with some Japanese grass and perhaps a few azaleas would be lovely.

      Sounds like a nice fit. If you have a nice overhang then maybe look into smaller courtyard styles of gardens.

    Hi, I really enjoyed this video! We are planning a Japanese garden. can you direct me to the video that discusses the type of small stones to look for?

    • @ShizenStyle
      @ShizenStyle  10 месяцев назад

      I haven't seen a video on it but I think I mentioned it in the description. I have used a combination of course grade and fine grade turkey grit if you are going for a white with a touch of grey color. Since it's a feed they can sometimes be found at farm supply stores, but it is sometimes hard to come by.

    Just subscribed to your channel! I’m starting to make my own little Japanese garden. I used pea gravel but it seems like it’s multi colored compared to the gravel that I see in your video. What would you recommend using instead of the pea gravel. I’m from upstate NY so there’s not much around here. Thanks.

    • @ShizenStyle

      Hi there, sorry for the late reply. I should have mentioned that in the video! I've always used a company called GraniGrit. It's actually a chicken feed (chicken grit) so you might find it at a farm supply store. I get 2 different grades of coarseness, a thicker and thinner. That way any shapes like wave ripples will keep their structure better and won't just blow around if it's too small. There isn't really a color choice, put I do find the pea gravel a bit to colorful most of the time.

    Hello! Love your videos. What is used to create the raking sand? Is it decomposed granite? Thank you for the work that you do.

    "The dreaded koi pond volcano"
    Do you have any tips for incorporating a koi pond then? I'm looking at this as fishkeeper who would love to someday have a koi pond (and accompanying garden) as my ultimate place of calm.

    • @ShizenStyle
      @ShizenStyle  7 месяцев назад +1

      I think one of the main things is to shape the pond in a natural way, as in not just a pre-fab oval pond/pool shape. Using some different size rocks or boulders around the edges will also break up the flat edging you often see.

      Any local quarry mate, or if you have a building site nearby they will find plenty when they dig foundations depending on the area, just give em a visit! We pick them up regularly to build water features, garden landscapes etc

      Sounds nice though. If the boulders are a bit bold you can always nestle some boxwoods around them to soften their individuality.
