  • This week we look at what I've been doing with the pond liner underlay I tried in my filter system.
    What no fish at the Koi Pond window mystery. I haven't seen the fish at the window or in the Sky Pond for days now, but why?
    I've decided to make another dramatic change to my static filter system after continued use of the KK1000 as a static bed and how its worked for me and my filter system.
    Why has my Ghost Koi suddenly got a twisted back🤔😮

    5:22 Nitrates will be consumed by algae, the simple single celled suspended alagae (green water) also the algae on the pond walls and floor.
    Denitrifying bacteria on the pond walls,floor and in areas of low oxygen will convert Nitrates to Nitrogen Gas.
    The interesting part is denitrifying bacteria are Anerobic. Areas of low oxygen... static vs moving bed/media.
    By making a moving bed static you will in theory reduce the favorability for bacteria to process ammonia into nitrite. But increase its favorability for denitrifying bacteria to process nitrates back to nitrogen gas.

    Hi mate my understanding of a bent tail is it can be caused by many like like genitics, trauma, disease or infection, sudden change in water quality and improper nutrition also an older koi can develop a curve or twist. Maybe there is something in the underlay that is affecting it?

    Hi Andy another cracking update did you not think to swap the moving ed and the static as most static k1 beds are used as a mechanical filtration so if it was me i would go vortex - brushes then the static then the moving bed i think you would see a noticeable doing it that way 💯👌🧁👍👍👍

    Surely the fish inactivity is due to the water temperatures or is your pond heated? Im no expert but being a fisherman fish are just less active in the autumn and winter months.

    The koi clay contains elements of iron, so perhaps would turn Nitrate to Nitric Oxide?

    I believe that nitrate test you need to shake bottle two for 30 seconds and then the test tube needs to be shaken for 1 minute constantly then wait 10 mins for the result probably why your reading zero have another look at the instructions for the nitrate test

    As I have said in various places, we are not in the habit of using such tropical fish equipment to test water quality. And no one has a microscope, for example. Rather, the basic principle of KOI keeping is to observe KOI more and to have a keen eye that can be used for fine-tuning from that observation. We hope that everyone will first set up a complete summer feeding period same as breeders do and carry it out without being bound by such habits as soon as possible.

    The bend in the tail is a deformity that the fish most liky always had. Once the fish is healthy and has no other symptoms,it will be fine other than the way it looks. As with most of these types of deformities,they show as the fish grows. With the water tests,you focus on it as a whole. Nothing is out, so you have a good eco system going and the pond has found its balance. Fish will definitely be off with the temps dropping so quick. I've mine covered the past month to prevent this. Temps drop slower and dont fluctuate much ,almost like a greenhouse style over the entire pond. As you mentioned the nexus, it has both a moving and a static bed which supports the different filter bacteria,so is similar to what you have gone back to. Moving bed has proven to be a better option over the static due to the amount of air that keeps the bacteria thriving and as such works better to keep your water like it is. Also, a static bed can hold more dirt and as such can be a breeding ground for bad bacteria and other unwanted guests. Hope this is of some help and be a ware that something could have scared the koi and will take them a while to settle again, whether it is the water or a cat or something? They will settle again. Keep up what you are doing,as you have no issues, always a plus in the hobby. IMO

    I have static but drain from waste valve at bottom, no air blowing to boil just swirl with hand to loosen trapped dirt, does the job. Clean it once a week never clogged don’t think it’s the type of stuff that would unless you leave it for months. Nitrates have checked the amount coming out of the tap. Most suffer with high levels from tap and use di resins. You may be a lucky one that’s not got much (thought it was in all tap water), nitrate is less harmful to fish but causes stress at high levels and stunts fish growth. And by your size boys and girls your doing something right if it’s not you tap water you need to find out what it is, so you can bottle it and sell it and send me some free because I made you aware of it. Scrap that 10 % cut of all sales. We’re in the money we’re in the money. Lol

    sorry for the random comment, but a few months back, i noticed that you had listed the microscope that you use for looking for parasites.. decided to buy one, to save me a trip to my local koi dealer each time with a fish and stressing the fish.
    My question is, what zoom do you use to spot parasites, and how easy is it to spot them if there is any?

    • @KoiPondLifestyle
      @KoiPondLifestyle  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hiya, the x200 is enough for most parasites but the x400 is needed for Costia which are probably the smallest to find.. I placed a list of parasites to look for in my Community tab that should help you identify what your looking at. 😉👍

    Could the chemical makeup of your water itself changed I know water companies do change the chemical makeup of the water from time to time

  • @FARMOORKOI
    @FARMOORKOI 11 месяцев назад +1

    Nitrate is normally removed by water changes, but you could also be getting some bio denitrification through your multi bay filter system, particularly the un-airated parts, if your pond is well matured and fully cycles, if you have changed part of it from a moving bed to static, this would also aid nitrate removal converting it into nitrogen gas, though as you say cleaning the static can become a pain, but other parts of your un-airated filter will still operate in that manner, as for the Koi not coming up, I would put that down to a sharp decress in temprature, they do not like quick swings in temps, and interesting I have not had to use UV this year at all, and my water has not gone green, it has been crystal all year, great vid as always, best wishes, Tony😀

      After the issue with your Showa, did you treat the pond with any kind of bacterial treatment such as Virkon?
      If not I suggest you do and at least at a double dose. I’ve used at up to 6 times the recommended dose with no adverse effects, on the contrary, the fish perked up almost immediately when I had secondary bacterial infections after a bad case of Costia!
      I’d hit it with a strong dose for a couple to few weeks after filter cleans and then reduced doses after that.
      At this time of the year you can’t afford to mess around, you need to hit any problems on the head hard before the cold weather sets in!

    My SW London Thames Water nitrate is usually 30 to 40 ppm. The cells that make the water look green must be using up some of the nitrate. I turn my UV off for the winter, then back on in spring after the water gets green. I think this helps to absorb and remove some of the nitrate that has built up. The pond gets little to no direct sun from November to late February.

    The bent tail could be a number of things. If its done it gradually over months or years it could be deficiencies in food. Ie one type of food for a long period, or genetics. If its done it suddenly it could be electrocution a tumour or a bacterial infection. Most common being a bacterial infection
