- It was probably a bad idea to do a mini backstage tour on "loud shirt day". The one day a year we all turn up at work with the loudest shirt we can find. This is just a quick look at some of the stuff in the main control area of the show. The data from here then gets distributed to other parts of the arena and into the castle to control the power and lighting via a load of other racks.

I was thinking the same, i can't go anywhere without spending more time looking at the lx kit than the show.
I've always had to do my production sound and lighting with whatever I could cobble together (small school, not a very large drama budget). Getting a hold of nice kit is a real treat!
How comes its 'Loud Shirt Day' yet clives the only one in a loud shirt. ?

That entire structure including those offices are all temporary buildings/structures that have been erected for this show, amazing!
I'm surprised for 'loud shirt day' you didn't rig up some speakers to your shirt and blast your favorite music. That way when someone tries to ask you a question you can say, "What?! Speak up! It's Loud shirt day!"

i am turning down the volume, but nothing changes the shirt....help!

This is my favorite video. I used to own a stage lighting business that was doing great until the crash in 2008. I really wish i could see a full functioning large stage in action. The largest concert i ever did was just over 10,000 people and it broke my heart to sell all my gear.
Fantastic, Clive. The BBC should have had you do a little walkaround of the backstage of the Tattoo presentation. For general geeks who don't have any idea of what it takes to put on a production like this it is fantastic to have a guide with specific knowledge as well as enough curiosity to try to understand the "other people's" jobs. This was genuinely educational.
Wow, the setup backstage is a lot more sophisticated that I imagined it would be. Don't get me wrong, I did think it would be quite sophisticated but it's just so more than I ever imagined.
AlpakaWhacker ...damn I was surprised too! Figured everything was done in your basement or garage. What is the place really used for ... Concerts? I figure you can make a satellite and launch it from the arena, then use gps & film the return trip & landing right from/ thru them windows. You can do it!

Wow I saw how much things have changed since 1976 when I was stationed with The Old Guard Communications Section. We were charged, in addition to our tactical Infantry duties to the Theatrical Lighting and Sound Stage equipment. We had a large selection of lighting equipment that took up nearly an entire basement under one of the barracks on Fort Meyer Va, and when we went out on jobs, we had two large van type trucks to haul the equipment. It was very interesting work, and since 1976 was our bi-centennial year, we had plenty of shows to put on, including Torchlight Tattoo, and The Spirit of America, with lots of explosion simulators and all sorts of lighting challenges.
It always makes me happy to see Hog control. I am Hog 3/4 programmer in the US and from what I have noticed is that Hog seems to have a noticeably larger "martic share" in the UK and europe while GrandMA has a larger user base in the US. Wish I got to use Hogs more often, but it seems the trend in the US is more and more people are moving there systems to GrandMA.

As an Edinburgh lad this is a real treat to see behind the scenes of such a local institution! I was a sea cadet the last time I saw the Tattoo live so that's over twenty years now.

Never mind the Beeb, I think you and your team could make one of the most awesome semi technical documentaries of the type that they don't show on dumbed down TV any more. Thanks for posting this, I wish you could have made this video about 45 mins long explaining a bit more about how the technology works, is used, connected together and the advantages of modern digital systems.
Enjoying these work vid's. In weird way its like going to work with dad for the first time and seeing what he really does. Thank you also to those allowing you to film "their special places". What an awesome workplace, beats stringing lights in a coal mine any day.

These backstage videos at the tattoo are excellent, really informative, impressive array of kit that gets used.

@3:53 "I'm not an expert in audio desks" This cracked me up... having been a touring lighting director for years I spent thousands of hours next to audio desks and their operators and they're still a complete mystery to me as well... as I'm sure my kit was to them.

Great tour - I really hope that the punters appreciate what goes on behind the scenes to make the whole show work, but sadly I doubt it. It's incredible the amount of tech that is involved. The next time someone starts complaining about the price of concert tickets, I'm going to show them this ;-)

Nah, they have spent a lot of time and money making these dedicated touring lights, so they are wary of the risk of copying.
They need profit on their investment ;)
Valid points. I suppose it's not like you're working on some old Abstract lights with tech from the stone age.
+bigclivedotcom so they require you to have an nda, and are they exclusively designed for yourselves? If not then a wannabe competitor will just buy one to reverse engineer despite the fairly high price tag. If their product is decent and they are strong in other areas such as CX, people seeing inside won't be an issue at all and may even benefit them if it shows their product quality in a good light. No pun intended!
It is surprisingly hard to buy PRG equipment. Google "PRG lighting retailer", nothing comes up, their website doesn't have an obvious list of dealers, much less do they publish rough pricing.
Thanks for the tour. The Tattoo is a bucket list item for me. I've been working backstage off and on for about 50 years but I've never been involved in a big outdoor production like that. None of the equipment I work with needs to be IP67.
Thanks for taking the time to do this! The shows I normally work on are normally fairly low budget compared to this so it's super interesting to see!

I've watched the tattoo on TV here in Sweden a couple of times. It never occured to me that the whole setup was temporary until I visited the castle shortly before the 2011 tatto and saw it all being assembled. Must be quite expensive setting up and tearing it all down every year. Makes me wonder why the spectator stands and control rooms aren't a permanent structure. I mean, they've even gone to the trouble of installing permanent fixtures for the structure in manholes placed all over the Esplanade. I guess it's a minor cost compared to all the money the locals and tourists spend in Edinburgh during the Edinburgh Festival.

Awesome! :) Reminded me of the days I spent with Rage Noise Audio in Nelson, New Zealand. In particular, the World of Wearable Arts shows we did the sound system for. But the kit we used was no way near as flash as this stuff!

I see thumbnail and think, "nice Clive!" as I wish people would wear bold/unique clothing whenever I work at new venues, so I can differentiate and identify them more easily... then you start video by apologizing for the shirt.

Hey Clive, want to freak out your bosses? We had that same model of proximity card access door at my undergrad institution. Bump your shoulder into the main door with moderate force and simultaneously push a credit card between the two doors into the spot where the latch should be. It pops open instantly. They ended up installing plates over the gap when I showed them that.
It uses a drop bolt system.
Clive, we need a video of you at work for this one day. not a few minutes video but an actual DAY at work.
It's always tricky to film while at work. Some stuff can't be shown for security reasons and I also tend to be working.

The whole lighting crew had them, but were getting some food before the show started.
I've bee. watching your videos for between a few weeks to a month now, and I've enjoyed them. but all this re I have wondered why RUclips recommended you to me in the first place... *this is why* (I bet) :-P
I am trying to get into the creative lighting control industry, in fact I recently applied to lipa college to do their backstage course to help me get into uni. :-P
is love it if you would do more videos about this sort of stuff, I really couldn't care what it is you do as I want to know everything I can about the industry. :-P

Wow! I remember seeing the show when I was a kid, early nineties I think. I remember it as very impressive, but this level of production I don't remember. I guess things have changed over the years :)
It's evolved dramatically over the last ten years. Much wider range of acts too.
